Very nice impressive size measuring approximately. 10 1/4" across, 6 3/4" wide and 6 3/4" tall. Charming Rococo style. Central is an adorable Mermaid/Cherub/Putto arising from a pink. Ruffled petal, holding a shell above her head. Flanked on either side by an inkwell and another"well" meant to hold a drying substance to sprinkle on the newly composed missives. The front quill/pen holder part is a large scalloped shell embellished with a bouquet of flowers. The"vessel" holding the drying substance has a"butterfly" finial/handle. The base is curvaceous with gold detail. In remarkably good antique condition. The colors are bright and vibrant. No chips or stains. Minor paint loss commensurate with age. There are two firing cracks on the front"pen shell" And one small hairline on the left side which I believe occurred during the firing, since it appears to be an extension of the firing flaw. I think the cover of the inkwell originally had a small finial, but is not distracting. This really is an exceptional Inkwell- quite unique and even rare. An objet de vertu! Thank you for stopping! CONDITION: Very good. Minor porcelain chips. There are minor chips in the porcelain glaze at the rider’s right front shoulder; to the rider’s waist, behind, center; to the back side of the horse’s right leg; at the edge of the horse’s stomach, right side, center; and at the rider’s left elbow. There is as well a scattering of minute porcelain chips throughout, and the top of the horse’s right ear is also chipped. Other than cleaning, there has been no restoration work. The minor chips could be repaired, without additional cost, if you would like our conservator to repair the chips. First off ~ I couldn't take a bad picture of this if I tried. Plus the mold is in three parts; the putto's right arm, holding up the mallet. Is a joined piece. And the putto is a separate piece joined. After casting, to the lower base. It also appears that the left arm may have also been a separately molded piece. Finally ~ there are two tiny air release holes at the back of the sculpture. All these clues speak of this being an early and finely made piece. This is a small vintage Wächtersbach figurine of a putto(in German) putti or angel/cherub. It's marked Wohlfahrts-steingut in auftrag gegeben von ihrer Königlichen Hoheit der grossherzogin von Hessen und bei Rhein. That more or less means this is a piece of stoneware commissioned by her Royal Highness the Grand Duchess of Hessen and bei Rhein. The ceramic is only 4 inches(10cm) high. It has a small cherub with a bouquet of blue flowers over her shoulder. The base is a grayish color. It was designed by Ernst Riegel and dates to about 1912. No chips or cracks. According to the English Registry Marks these were proofed February 3. 1862. Investment grade parian ware wall plaques. These are museum quality pieces, sure to appreciate in value. These will fit into any fine art setting. A"similar" pair sold in much worse condition for $971.00 at Christies of London in 2013. The works are known as Allegories of Night and Day. With a little research with the British Patent Office the new owner should be able to ID the"house" who made these.
