There is as well a scattering of minute porcelain chips throughout, and the top of the horse’s right ear is also chipped. Other than cleaning, there has been no restoration work. The minor chips could be repaired, without additional cost, if you would like our conservator to repair the chips. Yale Univ Press. New Haven, 2001. Quarto, cream colored cloth covers, pictorial dust jacket, notes, index, 256 pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w with nearly 300 pictures. From the dust jacket: The great age of European ceramic design began around 1500 and ended in the early 19th century with the introduction of large-scale production of ceramics. Curator Howard Coutts considers the main stylistic trends—Renaissance, Mannerism, Oriental, Rococo, and Neoclassicism—as they were represented in such products as Italian Majolica, Dutch Delftware, Meissen and Sèvres porcelain, and Staffordshire and Wedgwood pottery. He pays close attention ... moreto changes in eating habits over the period, particularly the layout of a formal dinner. He discusses the development of ceramics as room decoration, the transmission of images via prints, marketing of ceramics and other luxury goods, and the intellectual background to Neoclassicism. Huge Vintage Pelican Statue by Natella Italian Porcelain Ceramics Pottery Figure
This auction is for a wonderful pelican figure signed Natella. The only other Natella pelicans I have seen have been no more than 10" tall but this fine bird stands about 19" tall and his beak alone is 9" long. I believe this might have been a store or countertop display used to promote the brand. The base is signed Natella but there are no other marks. There is what feels like a chip on the inside of the beak that is hard to see without looking closely when this is on display. Either it's a manufacturing error or the last owner painted over it to disguise it. There is no other damage.

The China Collector. A Guide to the Porcelain of the English Factories” By William Lewer. Published in London by Herbert Jenkins in 1913. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An early collector's guide to English ceramic factories. With chapters on Bow, Bristol, Caughley, Chelsea, Chelsea-Derby, Coalport, Derby, Longton Hall, Lowestoft, Nantgarw, New Hall, Pinxton, Plymouth, Rockingham, Spode, Swansea, and Worcester, as well as mark charts. This book has been written to enable the enthusiastic collector of China, even after he has passed through his apprenticeship, and acquired a certain amount of experience, to form a correct judgement of that branch of ceramics embraced under the designation of Old English Porcelain" This brings up the question- what about collectors who were not enthusiastic, and formed incorrect ... morejudgements? Well, I suppose that would have been impossible after reading the book. The specimens illustrated were from the collection at the Victoria& Albert Museum. The ABC of Collecting Old English China” By J.F. Blacker. Published by the London Opinion Curio Club in 1908. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Giving a short history of the English factories. And showing how to apply tests for unmarked china before 1800" The London Opinion Curio Club maintained a gallery in London where subscribing members could send their antiques to be vetted and sold on commission. This was part of a planned series of books for collectors, we hope to reach collectors generally, and also those to whom the prohibitive price of the best books, with their lovely illustrations, has been an absolute barrier to possession. The writer has had the advantage of handling pieces in a great many collections, and also dealing with china actually for sale" DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 6"x9" vi) + 142 ... morepages, line illustrations. Antique Pottery Porcelain - World Ceramics (1000+ Photos) / Oversize Book
WORLD CERAMICS: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY FROM EARLIEST TIMES edited by Robert J. Charleston. McGraw-Hill Book Co. NY, 1968. Comprehensive in every way. This exciting visual history of ceramics shows all the diversity of this subject in well over a thousand illustrations—over sixty in color. The dual role of ceramics—its evolution as a utilitarian craft, as well as its elaboration into a decorative art—is fascinatingly displayed in all its contexts, from the peasant’s hearth to the courts of kings. This history reaches far back into remotest antiquity to the earliest archaeological discoveries of crude baked clay vessels. All the mainstreams of ceramic tradition…are traced through prehistory, the medieval and Renaissance periods, the age of elegance, followed by the industrial revolution, right up to the present day… from the most utilitarian ... morewares to the strangest ritual objects, from the most simple and classical shapes to the most elaborate and ornate sculptural forms and from small and frivolous items—like scent-sprays and artificial flowers—to the most grandiose architectural schemes of panels and decorative tiles. The author, a former ceramics curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum has drawn upon the expertise of many in order to create this sumptuously illustrated survey of ceramic arts, a book for the general reader as well as collectors or dealers of all levels of experience.
