No maker's mark. But attributed to Schafer& Vater. Hand painted bisque. With unpainted match-strike strip at bottom and opening in back to use as receptacle for burnt matches. Figure is a grotesquely comical monk in a brown robe. With a row of small holes across the sides and top of his bald head. Holes fit the smaller size wooden matches- shorter and narrower than big wooden kitchen matches- which were commonly used for lighting cigarettes. Pipes, cigars, candles, and oil lamps in the years before paper matchbooks were widely distributed. There are two or three ... morespots with small shrinkage lines from firing of the clay(see photo second from bottom) These are not cracks- they are from surface drying during the making of the piece; they do not go through to the inside of the hollow figure. And there is paint n these lines, showing that they were present when the paint was applied. Painted surfaces have some light soiling. Mostly on the bald head, and a few scattered tiny pinpoint dots of white wall paint on the figure's left side. Except as noted. This piece is in excellent condition, with no chips, breaks, or cracks, or repairs in the bisque, and with all paint entirely original. Welcome to my ebay store! This LOVELY Thanksgiving centerpiece is of an unknown maker but is numbered on back 8893 and on bottom in red 21. I think this is a figurine of European/Dutch pilgrim. It is either a spill vase OR match/toothpick holder of bisque porcelain. It is definitely vintage and hand painted but I can not find ANY information about it. She has a nice pattern impressed on her apron. It came from a UK estate sale of all porcelain and vintage figurines I recently acquired. Could be a European made collectible. She has a beautifully painted and detailed face and her fingers are all intact. Definitely autumn color scheme. It is in beautiful condition. Antique Porcelain Match Holder. Wonderful Continental porcelain mother cat and kitten match holder/striker. This charming hand painted figurine dates from the mid to late 19th century. Marked only with an incised number“2970” we cannot identify a maker but feel that this piece was most likely made in Germany. The cat is dressed in a blue frock and carries a pack basket to hold the matches. The backside of the basket is grooved to provide a place to strike the match. This figure stands 5 7/8” tall(or 15 cm) This porcelain is fairly heavy for its size. Weighing 9 ounces. Condition: This delightful match holder is in excellent condition with no chips.
