Here we have a charming pair of hand coloured continental porcelain match holder/ strikers by Conta and Boehme. They each depict a little girl kneeling at a cloth covered table or bench with her dish of food. There is a dog sitting on each table. One, a Pug dog, watching the food the other, a King Charles Spaniel, eating it! There are baskets behind each girl in which to store the matches and spills. The back of the base of each figure group has a ridged edge on which to strike the matches. They are marked underneath with the shield mark of Conta and Boehme. The impressed four digit model numbers 4159 and 4160, impressed modellers numbers and hand painted decoraters marks. They date from mid 19th century around 1870. The each stand approximately 4 inches high. 4 1/4 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide. They weigh a total of 785g unpacked. They are in fairly good antique condition. The taller basket for the spills on each have been damaged and a have museum type repair. Please see the photographs. A highly decorative. Useful and pleasing pair. No maker's mark. But attributed to Schafer& Vater. Hand painted bisque. With unpainted match-strike strip at bottom and opening in back to use as receptacle for burnt matches. Figure is a grotesquely comical monk in a brown robe. With a row of small holes across the sides and top of his bald head. Holes fit the smaller size wooden matches- shorter and narrower than big wooden kitchen matches- which were commonly used for lighting cigarettes. Pipes, cigars, candles, and oil lamps in the years before paper matchbooks were widely distributed. There are two or three ... morespots with small shrinkage lines from firing of the clay(see photo second from bottom) These are not cracks- they are from surface drying during the making of the piece; they do not go through to the inside of the hollow figure. And there is paint n these lines, showing that they were present when the paint was applied. Painted surfaces have some light soiling. Mostly on the bald head, and a few scattered tiny pinpoint dots of white wall paint on the figure's left side. Except as noted. This piece is in excellent condition, with no chips, breaks, or cracks, or repairs in the bisque, and with all paint entirely original. Estate Antique German Fairing Match Holder / Striker baby chick and egg.
This ceramic figurine shows a baby chick with an egg from which he has just hatched. There is a caption on each side that says"just out" The egg holds the matches and the sticker is on the base below the egg. The measurements are 3 3/4" tall by 4" wide. Marked only with an incised number“2970” we cannot identify a maker but feel that this piece was most likely made in Germany. The cat is dressed in a blue frock and carries a pack basket to hold the matches. The backside of the basket is grooved to provide a place to strike the match.
