The body is covered with traces of encrusted material that can be seen throughout the body. from the Dogon people of Mali. The surface and texture on this well carved sculpture shows sign of long use and good age. This Dogon figure was used as a shrine piece and a representation of a Nommo. One of the mythic ancestors to whom prayers are made to get bessings. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same. They share visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A shrine figure such as this would be kept in the lineage elderâs house and used during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as âgoruâ. Traces of encrustation are the result of much ritual activity where offerings would be poured over the seated figure. The figure has traditional cross hairstyle. Beard going up to ears, fine patina and bent knee stance. Hemba number around 80.000 and live on the right bank of the Lualaba River west of Lake Tanganyika. They have been heavily influenced by their neighbors to the south, the Luba. Elements from the Luba are still present in the socio-political organization of the Hemba. The Hemba are divided into large clans headed by a hereditary leader known as the"Fumu Mwalo, who administers justice and watches over the ancestor figures. It must be also kept in mind that Holo sculpture takes much from its Yaka and Suku and Chokwe neighbors. This is seen in the details and style of carving as in this carved male figure with upraised arms. The stance and facial shaping argue a possible source among the Holo. The Holo are a smaller grouping of people numbering between 6-10.000 living in close proximity to the Yaka, Suku, Chokwe and Pende people. Coming from Angola sometime during the 16-17th centuries they are now settled along the banks of the Kwango River. What we know of their art often dates itself to a mid-1950's messianic cult rising during which much of their ritual sculpture was destroyed. Therefore objects either pre-date this event or were hidden during the destruction that took place. Holo had other works and objects such as slit drums, framed figures(nzambi) masks and ironwork that were related to royal elites. At best the character of the piece will stand as a challenge to place among a single people and yet it has itâs own simple sculptural charm as well as magical potential in the cavity to hold substances. Figures like this were used in the cult Mahamba associated with healing. Fertility, and protection. The hole in its chest served to receive magical substances that empowered the figure. Pair antique cast plaster male figure/figural wall sculptures
Up for your consideration is a beautiful pair of antique cast plaster male torso's. Purchased from a recent Savannah estate sale of American and European art/antiques. Created by George Vanderpool c. 1900-1940 These are very heavy weighing 15 lbs each. They will be carefully packed and shipped separately. Each torso measures 18" in length and 12" across. Highly detailed with a rich patina due to age. There are no chips or damage to either piece. Cast in plaster with a heavy wire hanger permanently embedded on back side for displaying on wall. These would be lovely displayed in a custom case or stand. Feel free to ask questions before placing a bid. No returns on antique items.

OLD Quality PORCELAIN Male FIGURINE figure style of ROYAL RUDOLSTADT signed num
Guaranteed to be original and as described- Old early to mid 1900's very finely made porcelain figurine figure in the style of Royal Rudolstadt with Cream and brown accents. The figure is signed/numbered on the base 23/170. So I assume this is the 23rd figure out of 170, then they would break the mold and do a different figurine. This is a fine quality item.and is old as there is a tiny remnants of a old label on the very base of the sculpture. I a attributing this to being either German and or French in origin based on the form and quality of the painting on the fine porcelain. SIZE: 7 1/2 inches high by 5 1/4 inches across the widest part by 4 1/4 inches deep.CONDITION: Excellent condition. This is a quite stunning alabaster carving of a male figure of which: During our research we have been informed it certainly dates from the art deco period of the c1920s. Of a european origin. Intricate detailed carving in alabaster of the male figure wearing the cap& jacket. Mounted onto the rectangular marble base. It has an overall height of about 5inches. Max overall marble b ase size of about 3.25 x 2.25inches. Condition: Considering the age. The overall condition is excellent and is not subject to any major blemishes except: besides minor chipping/nibbling. Would have had a cigarette in the mouth. All as per pictures.
