Antique Chelsea Samson SPOTTED CAT- 19th Century - Marked Germany w /Gold Anchor
Offered for sale is a delightful little miniature figurine marked Chelsea Samson. This exquisite piece carries the gold anchor mark on the top of the base at the rear. The gold anchor mark is between the darling yellow and black spotted cat's tail and the top of the green plinth it is seated on. It measures approximately 2. 1/2" tall with a 2" x 1 1/4" oval base. This piece was made in and marked in gold GERMANY on the underside. The gold anchor mark was typically used by the Chelsea factory in England in the 18th Century. Edme Samson and his son. Emile, built their business by making copies of items from the famous factories of the day such Chelsea, Derby, Meissen and Sevres, French faience and even Chinese wares. Over the years, these copies have become collector's piece in their own right. At any rate, this little ... morecat is enchanting. It has a nice weight for being so small and is very nicely finished. Alternate quadrants in dark underglaze blue. Gilt borders. Solid gilt painted spout& handle. Cover similarly divided with landscape painted reserves. Applied flower bud finial& serrated green leaves. The deep blue shows the bleeding at the edge characteristic of the gold anchor period which is typically. As here, covered by gilt borders elaborate enough to do the job. The porcelain body of this period has bone ash added to the formula& is therefore closer to bone china than the softer bodies of the raised anchor period(c.1749-1752) the red anchor period(c.1752-1756) Still the body shows tiny pinholes& small moons when ... moreheld to the light. Hello. This is a is a Stern Brothers Etched Sterling and Gold Thimble Marked 9 Sterling Anchor. Circa 1890 to 1908's. The mark- known as the"fouled anchor" on the thimble is that of Stern Brothers of Philadelphia. The figure 9 is a US size number. The anchor mark dates the thimble to 1890- 1908. The company used two other marks(SBC and GSC) during its history(1890-1933) It became Goldsmith. Stern& Co in 1913 until it folded in 1933. This is a Sterling silver with 10k gold band. GOLD THIMBLE - VERY BEAUTIFULLY ETCHED - 10k OR 12k GOLD marked with an anchor
Although I do not know how old this thimble is I know it is very old since it belonged to my friend who passed away in her 90's and it had been in her family. It is not marked with a K mark but it tested out 10K and they did not have the means of testing it for a higher number. Inside there is an anchor and size 6. Looking closely it looks like there are some hairline cracks at the rim on the inside but can not see them on the outside. It is beautifully etched. 1.7 DWT.
