This is an antique English Staffordshire pottery Spaniel and is in very good condition. Construction. Style and pottery/glaze date this wonderful little dog to the mid 19th century. No cracks or damage other than a few extremely tiny flea-bit chips around the base. Typical for its age. It’s decorated with black and a bluish grey with a gilt gold collar. The surface is crazed as seen in the photos. Typical of these pieces. It is unmarked. Photos are the best way to describe this beautiful piece so please check them out! It’s about 4 5/8 inches tall. This fine pair of English pottery Staffordshire King Charles Disraeli Spaniels are crisp in their molding and have wonderful expressions. They are in mint condition- c1850. While English pottery figural groups; single figures and animals were made during the later part of the 18th Century. Animals however. Really came into vogue during the reign of Queen Victoria(1837-1901) These"comforters" as they were called were an integral part of the Victorian English household. Dogs, particularly King Charles Spaniels, were especially popular. Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli who served Queen Victoria as Prime Minister. Was a great dandy and paid special attention to his hair, always sporting a carefully groomed central forehead curl. Consequently, the affectionate name, Disraeli" has endeared itself to the model of Spaniels that have ... morecurly hair on their forehead. Staffordshire figures and animals were made by many different potters and factories and were rarely signed. They were potted from simple two-piece press moulds. Once dry. The moulds were placed together and thin rolls of clay were inserted to seal the seams inside. The next step was to make a small hole, usually on the base, so that air was able to escape during the firing process. After the first firing, the figures were painted with underglaze colors and then dipped into a liquid glaze and refired. Once this process was completed, the figures were then painted with enamel, overglaze, colors and any gilding required and then fired a final time. Due to the deposits of clay left in the moulds, the average mould's life would not last for more than 100 figures without severe loss of quality. This is one way to tell the age of the figure, the cleaner and crisper, the earlier it was produced in the mold's life. The more often the mold was used, the less the quality of the figure produced. The donator said this sweet puppy was an English Staffordshire Dog Vase. CIRCA 1850; a rare Staffordshire Spaniel Dog with lovely golden brown spots and an orangey-red flower; the vase measures about 13" high and 8" wide.
