THE ENTIRE BOX AND LID ARE ARE DECORATED WITH SWAGS. THESE CHERUB SCENES ARE UPRAISED FROM FROM THE SURFACE. THE CHERUBS AROUND THE BOX HOLD VARIOUS MUSICAL INSTUMENTS INCLUDING A HARP, FLUTE AND A STRINGED INSTRUMENT. THIS BOX IS 2.25" TALL X 3.5" IN DIAMETER. Offered for sale is this beautiful antique match safe. The safe is marked SterlinE. I copied this information off another ebay add. IT WAS A TRADEMARK OF THE JAMES. E. BLAKE COMPANY AND IS MARKED'SterlinE' WITH A LARGE S& E ON IT. ITS OVER 100 YRS OLD AND STILL QUITE IN DEMAND. Don't see this sort of item very often anymore. A wonderful theme of cherubs. Angels or cupids. The details in the high relief scene and figures are outstanding, right down to the faces which you can make out clearly. There is some minor wear, a couple small dents or dings on the back side. Another remarkable thing is how nice and shiny the finnish still is. Even in the pictures where you see a little blue green color by the bottom is a reflection from my shirt. There is a sort of black tarnish spot along the bottom edge. The hinge is intact and tight ... moreand it closes nicely with a snap. Lovely antique. Sure to make a welcome addition to your household and collection! LIMOGES HAVILAND PORCELAIN HANDKERCHIEF NAPKIN FOLD PORTRAIT PLATE CUPIDS CHERUB
Charming porcelain plate featuring a center scene of two chubby winged cherubs/ putti/ cupids displaying their attributes of bow. Arrows and quiver amidst a sky of muted pastel colored clouds. One cupid is depicted as the archer and holds his bow and arrow aloft as if making ready to shoot at his target and pierce his/her heart. The second cupid appears to be gathering pink roses from around the quiver. Possibly to fashion the wreath or garland of roses sometimes worn by cupid as a chaplet on his head. It has been conjectured that the flowers stand in for the pierced hearts taken, as evidence of victory. In fact, some less good natured renditions of cupid show him wearing a belt strung with hearts pierced by an arrow.but our cupids are too cute and sweet for that! The center scene of the 2 cupids is done by stencil but the surrounding clouds ... moreare hand painted. This technique of adding hand painted touches to printed stencils is called“mixtion. and the method was often used by the Limoges factories. The folded-up corners and the back of the plate are completely hand painted in powder/ baby blue and the edges are outlined in gold. The back of the plate is initialed by the artist“M.V.A. and dated“1888. which fits the production time line perfectly, as the“H&Co. underscored by“L” stamp in under glaze green was used beginning in 1888(until 1896) Victorian-era ladies of means and leisure often engaged in different areas of creative expression. Such as needlework, decoupage, calligraphy, sketching as well as painting on canvas and china, just to name a few of the more common pursuits. China painting classes were very popular and eagerly attended. Porcelain blanks were purchased and then decorated with varying degrees of success depending on the talent level of the artist. Porcelain blanks with factory scenes already printed on were also available, although mostly with simple or floral motifs.
