I came upon Dixie Beau at an estate sale. He was sitting amongst a room full of other dolls. The former owner was obviously a doll collector. Pinned to him was a tiny. Rusty safety pin and an old half-faded name tag. There is also another note pinned to him that is not totally legible in the photos. It reads: Rita. I want you to have this doll I got a long time ago from GA. Don't believe you have any black ones. 2. A Real Photo Postcard(RPPC) advertisement for Dixie-Beau and the other Black cloth dolls made by the Dixie Doll Co. from the 1940s that I found while researching Dixie Beau. An RPPC is an original postcard card printed on photographic stock and produced from a photo negative. It is not a screened print of any kind. Generally real photo postcards were made in smaller quantities than printed postcards. Are prized for their detail, and thus are usua lly more valuable. The postcard is unused and in excellent shape as seen in my photos. I took Dixie Beau and the postcard to a local Black history museum to get their take. They agreed that both indeed appeared authentic. They also offered to buy him from me on the spot. But instead, I am offering up the 2 collectibles together in one bid. With NO RESERVE! Dixie Beau is exactly the way I found him: great shape. No tears or rips, but his suspender has come loose-an easy tack. There is some very fine crazing to the composition on her face but there are no cracks and no lifting. The compo on her arms and legs has very minimal crazing and no cracks or lifting. She even still has bright red painted fingernails! She has composition lower legs and painted on black shoes also in overall good condition. Her clothing is original and is sewn on to the doll. Her dress is a peach/coral colored satin fabric with lots of lace trim. She has a net fabric slip that is stitched inside the dress to keep it full. Her bonnet is made with the same satin fabric and the wide lace trim is wired to help it hold its shape. It is fastened to her wig so cannot be removed. She was made circa 1920 and her hair style matches that time period. This is a beautiful doll and she displays great! She has been living in a non-smoking home and there are no foul odors. Made by the HERTWIG& Co. in Thuringian East Germany, artist at this time were Josef Lorenzl, Stephen Dakon, and possibly Gustav Oppel.the company didn't continue after the fall of the Berlin Wall~this is what I found. The mark is in green and has an H in a house and this one looks like a watering can under it. Then the word Germany under this is AB94, this mark is circa 1914-1945.also the base in the back is marked 1268. She is BEAUTIFUL and approximately 11 5/8" tall. She measures 8 ¾" tall and has a beautiful full Off White. Blue and Gold gown, filled with layers of lace and a blue bow. She has brown hair with 3 pink roses in it, blue eyes and a lace hat with a blue bow to match her dress. I have not cleaned her up because the lace is fragile and I am afraid I will break it. The name"Dresden" figurines is somewhat misleading when their true origin is considered. Even though they are called Dresden figurines. They were mostly manufactured in nearby Meissen. The figurines were then taken to Dresden to be sold, as Dresden was the capital city and the center of commerce and industry in Saxony. Dresden figurine history is therefore also Meissen history and vice versa. Measuring approximately 3 7/8- 4" tall x 2 7/8 wide on top of a concave clover ... moreshaped footed base of 1 3/8" x 1" in circumference. A delicate looking lady dressed in a frilly three tiered Dresden Lace white dress with pink bodice. Trimmed in Dresden lace around neck as well as the yellow rose anchoring the neckline and pink shoes. A rainbow of colors of roses hand applied throughout the flared skirt tiers as in yellow, pale blue and green petals. Two finger tips are missing on right hand which faces down and all others are present as well as on the upward facing left hand. What a sweet pose for this lovely figurine. It is difficult to determine missing pieces such as flowers or lace at times but I do believe a rose may be missing on the front of the skirt. Finishing the figurine is the gold embossing script like desisgn around the base.
