This is a very attractive English Historical Staffordshire ... moreplate with a reticulated or fretwork decoration to the rim. The transfer pattern is called "Village Church", by an unknown maker. This pattern is identified in Coysh's first book on Staffordshire patterns. What makes this example so special is not just the fretwork rim, but also the basketweave internal rim with a pink lustre decoration and mostly the clobbered decoration over the blue transfer in green yellow and iron red or rust. DESCRIPTION: NO RESERVE for a pair of small-size pair of Antique 19th century English Staffordshire Begging Spaniel Dog Figurines. Measure about 4" tall each. Please note. A true pair and the dog's positions reverse such that they are facing each other when the figurines are placed side-by-side(pic#1) Appear hand-modelled and not from molds and please note how one of the dogs is a little shorter and fatter than the other as can be seen especially in pic#4. Probably early- to mid- 19th century Staffordshire. These are marked with a red anchor on the underside as shown. The red anchor mark is most closely associated with Chelsea, but a lot of the early Staffordshire makers used spurious Chelsea marks and these are probably ca. 1820- 1860 Staffordshire. The figure is solid and on the bottom there is a small piece of excess porcelain that has been there since the figure was made. Up for bid is a very nice pair of Staffordshire figures on horseback. These are 11 1/2" tall and 8 1/2" wide. They were still in England two weeks ago. Both figures are original old pieces in excellent condition. They show some normal age wear to various spots of color trim but are completely damage free. These are what is in slang terms called"Flatbacks" and are rather thin for fitting on a fireplace mantel. This is a beautiful rare large Staffordshire pottery figure captioned Paul& Virginia c1860. It is a rare to find figure and a large piece at 12 inches high. Very heavy weighted. Overall excellent coloring and displays very well, only repair is to the lady's neck. Some paint wear as is to be expected and firing flaws on the base, occurred in the making. This fine pair of English pottery Staffordshire King Charles Disraeli Spaniels are crisp in their molding and have wonderful expressions. They are in mint condition- c1850. While English pottery figural groups; single figures and animals were made during the later part of the 18th Century. Animals however. Really came into vogue during the reign of Queen Victoria(1837-1901) These"comforters" as they were called were an integral part of the Victorian English household. Dogs, particularly King Charles Spaniels, were especially popular. Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli who served Queen Victoria as Prime Minister. Was a great dandy and paid special attention to his hair, always sporting a carefully groomed central forehead curl. Consequently, the affectionate name, Disraeli" has endeared itself to the model of Spaniels that have ... morecurly hair on their forehead. Staffordshire figures and animals were made by many different potters and factories and were rarely signed. They were potted from simple two-piece press moulds. Once dry. The moulds were placed together and thin rolls of clay were inserted to seal the seams inside. The next step was to make a small hole, usually on the base, so that air was able to escape during the firing process. After the first firing, the figures were painted with underglaze colors and then dipped into a liquid glaze and refired. Once this process was completed, the figures were then painted with enamel, overglaze, colors and any gilding required and then fired a final time. Due to the deposits of clay left in the moulds, the average mould's life would not last for more than 100 figures without severe loss of quality. This is one way to tell the age of the figure, the cleaner and crisper, the earlier it was produced in the mold's life. The more often the mold was used, the less the quality of the figure produced. This is a very fine and rare early Staffordshire figure of a seated hound wearing a red collar. The base with gilded highlights. Similar figures can be found in G.D. Rice's book"Dogs in English Porcelain" As you can see from the photos one ear is chipped off. 3.75" tall.

Old antique Staffordshire England fairing English setter dog horn bugle trumpet
Description: Old. Antique figure of a dog, English setter I believe, lying on a bed with a ball and horn, trumpet or bugle. Gold tassels on the corners of the bed, but most of the gold has worn off. This is actually a lid for a box, but displays very nicely on its own. I believe this is from an old Staffordshire England fairing piece. About 1 5/8" high x 2 3/8" long. No maker's marks, someone has written something on the bottom, I can't quite make it out- looks like Calvell or Galvell to me. Very good condition, no chips, cracks or crazing. 19th C Antique Staffordshire English Flatback Scottish Farmer/Worker Figurine
This is a old Staff flatback figurine which has been in my personal collection for many years(smoke and pet free home) The farmer/worker man? is dressed in Scottish attire. It stands approx 11 1/2 inches tall and weighs almost 2 pounds. Other than a small hairline in the rear from the time of manufacturing. I see no other damage. There is some normal age crazing. Pair 19th C Antique Staffordshire English Flatback Hunter on Horse Figurines
This is a very nice pair of white. Flatback, Staffordshire figurines(one faces left and one right) They are hunters on horseback with a deer slung across the saddle in front of them. They are hand painted with gold on their clothing and outlining the deer and details of the horses. The faces. Hands, and legs of the hunters are"flesh-colored" Black is used for the hunters' hair, their shoes, and the muzzles and hooves of the horses. There are green bushes or clumps of grass beneath the horses. These are in good condition and don't seem to have been repaired. Except for some crazing and what appear to be cracks in the glaze from manufacture. They have no visible cracks or damage except on the right facing figurine. That figurine has a chip missing from the top of the horse's head, which shortens one ear. It is noticeable ... moreon close inspection; see the pictures. That figurine also has an oddity in the glaze at the crook of his right elbow, which looks to be from manufacture(see photo) The figurines stand approximately 14 1/4" high and measure about ten inches in length between the horse's nose and tail. They weigh about eight pounds apiece.
