It most likely dates to the middle to last part of the 19th Century. It does have some cracking in the front writing surface of the desk, but these areas are superficial thus far. The desk is made of what I believe is mahogany, and has ornately carved accecents on the vitrine shelf supports which are done in reverse scrolls.

Antique 1800s Lap Desk Sturdy Solid Mahogany Campaign Style w/ Lock and Key
This solid wood lap desk was made to hold up to heavy use. Probably for a Military Officer. A Traveling Official, or a Businessman that required a durable portable desk. Closed it measured 15 in. by 10 in. and 6 in. high. When opened it had a 13 ½ in. 5 ¾ in. writing surface and with another flip of the top would become a 13 ½ in. by 13 ½ in. surface. Made with solid Mahogany using hand cut dovetailed joints, it has Brass Handles recessed into the sides. Overall condition is good with wood patches in the back and along the inside edge. At some time in the past the felt was replaced and the leather hinges on the interior compartments are torn with the felt now supporting the writing surface. The top has a tight age crack, the felt has a tiny hole, and the old finish shows marks, scuffs, and fine scratches. It is sturdy ... moreand ready for use. ANTIQUE WOODEN MAHOGANY? LARGE LAP DESK DOVETAIL BUILT- SIZE 17" X 11" X 6" Description I am not sure who made this lap desk. It shows hand written on the wooden plank NORWICH. CONN 1879. If anyone can help with description, i would appreciate it. Overall, it is in very nice condition considering the age of the box. There is very small and managable wood separation visible around one corner(is shown in picture) Box has no key. Inside there are few compartments along with ink well and its own space. Just see enlarged images as they are part of description. Very nice box with a lot of character and can be nicely refinish and be great addition to the collection. Sold as is. No refunds, no returns.

Here is an terrific mid-late 19th century flame mahogany column step back secretary with fold out desk. Turned legs and glass door bookcase or storage& display cabinet above and three large functional bureau drawers below. I've detailed the restoration work this lovely piece will need to bring it back to it's former full value in my detailed description of condition above and in my multiple photographs included to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and potential of this marvelous old piece of mahogany furniture bargain priced as a restoration project. It has had a few small professional repairs to the veneer previously. This wonderful cabinet travels easily in two pieces and stands 68 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back. The top ... morebookcase section measures 33 1/2 inches tall by 42 1/2 inches wide at the bonnet by 12 3/4 inches deep front to back. It has 12 panes of glass in it's upper cabinet doors and three small drawers run across the bottom within the top cabinet just below the two display shelves. The bottom bureau section measures 36 inches tall with a 35 inch tall flat surface height when the desk is closed and a 3/4 inch recessed space along the back for the upper bookcase to rest in. The base is 42 1/2 inches wide and 20 inches deep front to back and had three drawers. Inside the top bookcase the cabinet measures 25 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Divided by a shelf with 12 inches clarance below the shelf and 15 inches clearance above the shelf. Below the shelves but inside the cabinet doors are three small beautifully hand dovetailed drawers, 11 1/4 wide by 5 3/4 inch front to back by 2 3/4 inch deep with the center drawer of the three actually being only 11 inches wide. The desk top writing surface when open has a surface height of 33 1/2 inches and measures a nice large 39 3/4 inches wide by 14 3/4 inches front to back with pull out supports on both sides to support

This is a very nice mahogany with satinwood inlay American writing desk. to the top behind the door there are drawers with pigeon holes. To the base there are there drawers to either side they are there compartments for keeping bottle of drinks. It has the pull down flap for writing with a green baize. It sits on square tapered legs with some inlay. The top comes of the base so its easy to transport. A very nice American piece of antique. Measurements are 41 wide 48 high 21 deep. Offered here is an excellent antique 19th century English secretary desk. This desk is in very good antique condition. It stands 87" high. Is 44" wide at the widest point and 22" deep. Each side of the base is built with a single 22" mahogany board. The desk features an interior fitted with 6 small drawers, a locking(key included) door interior compartment, and flanking that, 2"hidden" vertical pull out cash and document compartments which are disguised as books. Antique ladies mahogany writing desk decorated with hand painted scenes of the couples dancing in front. Landscape scenes on the top, on the both sides and on the front part of the drawers. FANTASTIC ESTATE FIND! This gorgeous French writing desk was sitting in a backroom with painting supplies on it.unbelievable! Although this piece is not perfect. The flaws in the top only add character and experience to the rich feel of this solid mahogany, handcrafted beauty. The wonderful handcarved cabriole legs with such an ornate fineal structure under the desktop are outstanding and capped with very ornate bronze eagle talons gripping it's ball feet present this piece of history with style, grace and strength. The only maker's or craftsman mark are the numbers 1111 carved into the bottom of the desk and 1114 carved into the bottom of the drawer. It is pretty amazing the way it sits, but with a little know-how and the right products on the desk surface(the legs and fineal are darn near perfect) this piece would be simply stunning. Antique Mahogany Lap Desk Velvet Interior Compartments Missing Lock
Up for auction is an antique lap desk recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It has no inkwells. It is missing covers and dividers to the compartments, we feel the velvet may not be the original, it has age but does not seem as old as the piece perhaps, The lock mechanism is missing. None the less a beautiful example of an antique lap desk worthy of a little repair with the pieces inside in photo 6. The exterior of the lock is there, but only the face, the locking mechanism was removed prior to auction. The monogram plate was never engraved but has some surface scratching, along with the whole piece, commensurate with age and use. There are some remnants of tape on the top, perhaps from auction or estate labeling. This piece measures 15" x 10 x 6" It appears to have been well used in its day, guessing ca ... more1850s, but the wood still retains a lovely lustre patina. Antique American Mahogany Writing Desk Bureau with Brass Handles Made in 1800s
This is a very nice very heavy Desk Bureau made in USA circa 1820. There are a few little repairs to the flap but the rest of the desk is pretty good. The colors is a brown and slightly reddish. The drawers and the flap has satinwood string inlay. There are small areas were some is missing, it sits on splayed feet and has brass handles which may not be the original ones. The back and the drawer linings again are all original with dovetail joints to the drawers. Its fitted with 2 envelope drawers to the interiors and many small drawers with a few small brass handles missing. But we will try and find these before its sold. The slides work fine to support the flap. Measurements are 42 wide 20 deep. 43 high. very very heavy- has been in storage for approx. 18 years must have been taken apart before moving into storage- 4 main pieces(2 ends with drawers. This is a ca.1800 Georgian Mahogany Campaign Lap Desk. It has a full length dovetailed drawer with a brass locking rod. All of the brass hardware is original. The brass lock has a working key. It is 16"x 9.25"x 6"high and weighs 7 lbs. When open it is 19" long. There is a repaired hairline crack in the lid. The writing surface is dark green felt. The bookcase has mahogany"piecrust" bandings to the Gothic doors and the cornice. Original wavy glass panels. Interior with two adjustable maple shelves with flame mahogany fronts. Two ogee drawers are below. The butler's desk was a top drop down front with cubbyholes and single drawer. New green felt writing surface. Two long drawers below over case on mahogany bracket feet. Antique Federal Writing Desk in Tiger Mahogany, with Two Small Drawers
Very old. Very classic desk from the early 1800s in, I believe, tiger mahogany. It's not a museum piece but it has been a beloved piece that has been used, with care. I've tried to capture the beauty of the wood on the top in my pictures. All the edges are slightly rounded from use and there are a few minor scratches and nicks, commensurate with its age and use, but its quality shines through. The desk stands. At its tallest point from the backboard to floor, 34" and the desk top is 28 1/2" from the floor. The top is 36" across and 18 1/2" deep, excluding the backboard which adds another 1/2" 19" total) It has two small drawers that sit on each side of the top, 3 1/4" tall, and their platforms measure approximately 10 1/4" by 10 1/4" The outsides of the drawers measures 2 3/8" by 9" ... moreand the insides measures 1 7/8" high by 8 1/4" across by 8 3/4" deep. The desk has its original brass handles but they've seen the greatest wear. With one slightly bent and the other with a small crack. Very similar handles replaced these, as you can see in the last picture. This desk has been in the family for 60 years and has been treasured for the entire time. I'm now having to downsize my mother's estate and I'm hoping someone will love and care for it as we have. I did my best to capture the style and quality in pictures. Circa 1860, made by the renowned cabinetmakers, James Lamb of Manchester. The desk boasts a dark sage green& gold tool leather flanked a by a rounded thumb moulded edge top. Below. There are 4 large working graduated drawers to each pedestal and a central drawer above the kneehole area. The front of the desk boasts moulded cushion fronts drawers(this is a sign of top quality) along with the original turned mahogany knobs. The hand dovetailed drawer linings and drawer bottoms are constructed of top quality solid mahogany. They even feature quarter beading in the drawer linings(another sign of quality) feature lovely quality thumb moulded fronts. The top left hand drawer is stamped“Lamb of Manchester” Below.
