Vintage Branded Monterey Chairside Lamp Table c. 1950s
My uncle. Clif Spens, and his wife, Viva, owned and operated the La Loma Lodge motel in Montecito(Santa Barbara) from about the mid-50s. I have family photos of La Loma going back to 1956, and visited with my family in the 1960s. After my uncle's death, Viva continued to operate the motel, but because of Highway 101, which bypassed the Coast Highway location, business was slow. In a letter to Cliff's cousin in June, 1968, she wrote: Just a note to say I think I've sold— almost afraid to say it out loud. It's not as good(a price) as I should(get) But.I just can't take it much longer.I'll get a first trust deed of $77,000 at 7% to be paid in full in 15 years.Right now and for the weekend there are three bulldozers, two water trucks and a road scraper parked right in front, so the) driveway is closed. When Clif's sister Laurine passed away in suburban Detroit. I inherited a branded Monterey combination table and lamp. I suspect it came from La Loma Lodge. A vintage furniture dealer in California told me it was probably designed for motel use. And I think Clif's sisters and their husbands had invested in the motel, so they may have taken some of the furniture when Viva sold the place. Cava restaurant now occupies what was the office and Spenses' home. And the motel units have become offices and studio apartments. Carlos Lopez-Hollis at Cava told me that when his family opened Cava in 1997, it had already been converted into a restaurant. I think before it became Cava, it was Acacia restaurant and bar. It is stained with an"expresso" colored stain and glazed over with a light coating of polyurethane. The table is made to set in front of a couch. The table is 68" long, 51.5" wide, and 16.75" high. I built this brand new to sell on ebay, just for you! It has never been used. The legs are actual vintage legs which were restored for this very purpose. They have brass tips that are not 100% perfect, but they look quite nice anyway. I decided to use these vintage legs because they are much nicer than the new garbage being produced and sold. The brass tips are tapered the same as the rest of the leg, which is quite stylish. The cost of the table is $295, plus shipping. This drum table is hand painted and features the slogan" Pro Aris Et Focis" which is a military phrase meaning" For God and Country" The rope tension pulls are made of felt while the table top is white leatherette. The body is made of plywood(exterior) and composite board(interior) In very good condition with some minor age and use related scratches and scuffs. Charming 4' Vintage 1950s-Era Wood School Work Dining Table w/Laminate Top
For auction is one simple 1950s-era public school work table. It has solid wood legs and frame and a laminate top edged with a wide aluminum band. It is in good condition and still retains all of the marks and graffiti left by generations of children. The laminate top is a pale gray with a woven pattern and is in good condition overall. Aside from some fine dark scratches throughout and a small indentation(pictured) One of the corners has been dented in slightly, which chipped and raised the very edge of the laminate(pictured) Both long sides of the wood frame have markings; one side has a series of thin vertical lines and the other has a more noticeable cluster to the left. The upper edge of one leg has a 3' area where the wood has been chipped away, but it has worn to the point where it poses no splinter threat(pictured) The table is ... moreotherwise sturdy and would make a great small kitchen/dining/work table. Has a drawer in front with marker stains pic 9. Chrome legs have some light surface rust. 2 pits in the porcelain top on each end pic 3& 4, the 2 leaves are ok.
