SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 80 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Bowl Diameter: 11 millimeters(1/2 inch) Neck Diameter: 8 millimeters(1/3 inch) Top Lip Diameter: 16 millimeters(2/3 inch) Weight: 5.99 grams. CONDITION: Very good. Complete but likely repaired(professionally, probably by a conservator) Fairly uncommon style. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Heavy layer of iridescence and soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome first century A.D. Roman blown glass vial of reasonably nice dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen is over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the medium-sized pieces such as this, and even smaller sized pieces are rarely recovered intact except

Size 7(resizing available) Not cheap silver electroplate! This is a high-quality. Solid sterling silver designer ring manufactured by one of America’s leading semi-custom mount manufacturers. NOTE: Resizing is available(may incur nominal extra cost depending on size required) DESCRIPTION: Early in Rome’s history silver(and gold) came from Spain via the Phoenicians and their colony of Carthage. Partly motivated by a desire to control that trade. Rome engaged Carthage in three wars(the“Punic Wars” In fact father of the great Carthaginian General Hannibal was not only himself one of Carthage’s most famous generals, he was also a precious metals merchant. The Romans virtually deforested the entire country of Spain making charcoal to smelt silver and gold. When the silver in Spain began to play out, in 55BC Rome’s Julius Caesar invaded Britain, in part to acquire the rich silver deposits there. The Romans were the first to mass-produce coinage on a monumental scale, the first truly monetized society. Between 100 and 400AD the Romans produced billions of silver and bronze coins. At the height of the Empire. There were over 400 mints producing coinage throughout the empire. Silver was also fashioned into Greek-style jewelry. The chief centers of production were Alexandria, Antioch, and Rome, to which Greek craftsmen had migrated. Celebrating that heritage, here’s a gorgeous, high quality sterling silver semi-custom sterling silver ring. The ring is robustly constructed, much more substantial and heavier than the typical ring band. Please do not confuse this with cheap silver electroplate. This is a high-quality ring manufactured right here in the USA by one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of gold and sterling silver semi-custom mounts. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moesia. Present-day Bulgaria. This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces from Pannonia(Hungary) to Moesia(Bulgaria) And even in Rome itself. Oil was filled into the cente

Nicely constructed Roman bronze ring with a raised platform, six-sided bezel which at one time would have been engraved. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime, as it would take most of a life time to wear an engraved bezel smooth. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations. Though the ring was not originally produced to hold a gemstone. The large, flat bezel seemed to invite a gemstone.
