DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 159 pages. Publisher: Sterling Publishing Company. Inc. 1997) The Celtic world. As it existing in three separate countries with a common spirit and tradition; Ireland, Wales, and Brittany, is brilliantly revealed in these exciting epic chronicles with 120 evocative photographs of artifacts, manuscripts, and landscapes that bring the Celtic world to life as never before. Ireland, land of ancient warriors who value nothing higher than fame and courage as they battle magical forces pitted against them. Ancient warriors whose deeds are as noble and mysterious as the hill forts and standing stones scattered around the landscape. Ancient warriors whose love of exaggeration and boasting compare with the most extravagant blarney. These are the Celts revealed by the early Irish chronicles. Wales. A land of bands and druids hemmed into a beautiful, mountainous country where King Arthur roamed with his knights. The Welsh warriors saw themselves as defenders of the west, heroes who would one day hurl the foreign oppressors back into the sea. These dramatic chronicles date back to the Middle Ages, but they are truly much older than that. They tell of love and betrayal, of quests and challenges, of supernatural creatures and of murder. Battling dragons. Tyrants, and sorcerers, the warriors of Brittany were people of the sea. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Throughout ancient and medieval history. The color purple was traditionally the color of royalty, and was also associated with the planet and the Roman God Jupiter the“Lord of Gods” of the Roman pantheon, also known as Zeus to the ancient Greeks) Consequentially Amethyst has been used since the dawn of recorded history to adorn the wealthy, as well as royalty. Ancient civilizations prized the stone more than many other gems which today enjoy more recognition and value, including sapphire, ruby, diamonds and emerald. For some time in the ancient world, amethyst was valued equally with the diamond, and only royal families were lawfully entitled to own and wear the stone. Amethyst was used extensively in the ancient Mediterranean world for carving intaglio gemstones and seals, particularly by the ancient Greeks and Romans. And in both ancient Greece and Rome rings of amethyst set in bronze were worn as charms against evil. The first century historian and naturalist Pliny wrote that if amethyst were worn round the neck on a cord made from dog's hair, it would afford the wearer protection against snakebite. Celebrating our historical legacy here's a very large. Very clean, 19th century faceted amethyst pear from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Exported to Russia, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medie

The Buried People: A Study of the Etruscan World by Sibylle von Cles-Reden. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 248 pages. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. Ancient Roman-Celtic Floral Bronze Ring 50BC – 100AD
About The Roman Jewelry Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the ... moresilk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. About This Ring Both the Romans and the Celts had expert craftsmen who made many types of artifacts out of all sorts of materials. Some of these materials last a long time. Especially metals such as gold, silver, iron, and bronze just like this lovely ring. The tiny looped rings that make for a very eye-catching bezel on this ring have been soldered together incredibly strong, and form a floral shape with a rounded nodule as the middle of the flower. Its band is broad and very smooth all round. This ring has been very well preserved and still remains fully intact and as elegant an adornment as ever! In the Iron Age. The people of Britain lived in tribes. Today these people are often called'Celts' The Celts controlled most of central Europe and by 700BC they also conquered the lands of Northern Spain. The Celts were a force in Britain by 480BC. Celtic tribes continued to migrate to Britain and to dominate the country. The Romans with their well-organized armies became the domin

Ancient Roman Celtic British Bronze Bounding Hare Brooch - 80 AD
A beautiful ancient Romano-Celtic ‘bounding hare’ brooch. Dating to around 50– 175 AD. Sleek and agile. This wonderful depiction of a running hare is full of charm. Cast with its ears pinned back and front legs stretching breathlessly forward, with a central recessed cell which would have originally contained an enamel inlay. Whilst ancient Celtic art was typically abstract. These zoomorphic brooches are more assertively figurative, reflecting Roman influence. Despite this, they still retain a separate aesthetic from Roman depictions of animals, producing a uniquely British style. Animal fibula are in many ways the most fascinating of ancient brooches. Giving a momentary glimpse into the life and thinking of those who wore them. Many of the animals depicted had religious significance and the fleet-footed hare was revered in the ancient Celtic ... moreworld, especially amongst the tribes of southern and eastern Britain. It was believed that the animal could cross between the worlds at will. Carrying messages from the gods to the people. The hare was believed to be a creature of the British war goddess Andraste, whose permission had to be sought before declaring war. Indeed, Boudicca was said to have released a hare from the folds of her dress and interpreted the direction in which it ran as being a sign of Andraste’s approval of war with the Romans. Though this image is now preserved only in these beautiful items. It would likely have been ubiquitous in ancient Britain, carved into door frames for protection, and tattooed onto the bodies of warriors. To the individual who wore this beautiful brooch, it would been a powerful symbol, the glistening bronze would have been charged with meaning and power. For similar published examples. Please see: Hattatt, R. 1993(2nd ed) Iron Age and Roman Brooches. Oxbow Books: Oxford. Length: 1 ¼ inches. Condition: Excellent. Ancient Roman Celtic British Bronze Reclining Panther Bacchus Brooch - 150 AD
An ancient Romano-British bronze reclining panther brooch. Dating to around 150– 200 AD. This reclining pantheress is shown with her head raised and paw reaching up to the mouth. As if to scratch an itch. She wears a banded collar suggesting she is being kept as an exotic pet, three projections run along the underside of the body to indicate teats.
