VERY RARE ANCIENT COIN On offer is this wonderful Roman silver intaglio ring. Set with a red jasper gemstone. The jasper intaglio has the image of a dolphin entwined around an anchor. This is generally accepted as being a naval symbol, associated with the sea god Neptune. However, this formula of fish symbol(i.e. dolphin) and an anchor(Hope, Salvation) combined, have more association with early Christianity. During the period this ring was being worn and used, Christianity was an underground religious movement. Using secret signs to identify with one another, the most popular being the fish motif. In the treatise entitled The Teacher(Logos Paidagogos) Written around 200 AD and addressed to baptized Christians, Clement of Alexandria instructed his addressees on kinds of pictorial devices they should choose for the finger ring that they wore ... moreas a signet(or seal) Our seals should be a dove or a fish or a ship running in fair wind or a musical lyre such as the one Polycrates used or a ship's anchor such as the one Seleucus had engraved on his sealstone. This ring features a nice Christian Shield design in the center of the bezel. Where the more common rings have a diamond surrounded by sets of lines in a diamond shape or a chevron. This example has a nice clear outline to the sides of ... morethe bezel with a central design composed of fine linear designs that were carved in such a way that they REALLY jump out at you. LOOK.at the central cross which is known as a Cross Potent because of the tiny bars at the ends of the cross. The design is crisp and clear and very well done. There are also some EXCELLENT shoulder decorations which are quite bold. The surface of this ring is as smooth as glass and the color is a deep. Bright golden color but if you look at it in certain lights you will see a light"wheat" color due to the alloy that the ring was cast from. The bezel is quite large too and measures 12mm x 10mm The shoulders of the ring also have some SUPER decorations which seem to have been expertly carved into the ring. This ring has a flat. 13mm x 13mm round bezel. Right in the center is an early Christian Chi Rho symbol that has the remains of an outlining ... moredecoration. The design was put on the ring sideways to make it easier to be used a seal ring to seal letters or documents. The labarum of the Roman army was a vexillium banner that displayed the"Chi-Rho" symbol. There is a shield design in the center of the bezel that I have rarely come across. Where the more common rings have a diamond surrounded by sets of lines in a diamond shape or a chevron. This example has three vertical panels with fine linear ... moredesigns that were carved in such a way that they REALLY jump out at you. LOOK.at the vertical lines that make up the panels. You can see the fine zig-zag lines that are only about 2 hairs wide. I have no idea what kind of chisel was used to make these designs but it was exceedingly fine. The design on this ring is in TIP TOP condition. There appear to be a squiggly line in one of the panels. Perhaps it is a snake? The center panel has a cross with a six pointed star above it. The last panel has what could be rays of light shining outward. I am unsure what these rings represent. I have another excellent example that has two of the panels completely empty and the third has an anserated cross with a star above and below it. These rings have to have been made to"say something" to whoever saw it. Much like wearing a Mason's ring today would signal your membership to other Freemasons. There is a fair amount of wear to the bands indicating that the ring was worn frequently, but the band is entirely intact and in very good condition. Of course the ring was produced with the idea that someone would purchase it and wear it, and that’s exactly what happened. So it should not come as any great surprise that there are indications of wear. The bezel possesses a peripheral pattern of hash marks around the entire perimeter. ROMAN BRONZE RING Early Byzantine Christian Cross Great Ladies Size Size 7 1/2 Average Opening = 17.75mm Antiquities Corner is proud to present this fine historical artifact for your collecting pleasure. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. A Great Example! This ring was found at a Roman site in Ancient Thracia and dates from 500- 700 AD and it's engravings are Byzantine in style. The bezel is a thick rounded shape that measures 12mm X 11mm and has a lipped edge to it. This ring gives us a nice motif of an early Christian cross. The design on the bezel is a well executed"Trefoiled" Cross. The term"trefoil" refers to the three circles ... moreat the end of each arm of the Cross. This is a pattern that was added to the Cross to represent the Holy Trinity. This is a nicely executed and noticeable Cross. This design was done expertly and remains almost as crisp and clear as the day it was made. I believe that this design was done on a much older ring which is most probably from the Roman Era. Because of the bezel shape and the remains of bulbous shoulder escutcheons. It's original Pagan design was replaced with a more desirable Christian motif. This ring is 100% complete and both the color and shine are 1st Rate with only a minor amount of surface pitting. It was common practice for Roman Legionaries to carry pieces of"liberated" jewelry in their purses for use as hard currency when on campaign.
