Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Xlg Roman Anatolia (Turkey) Bronze Socketed 6 Inch Spear Point Oak Frame BC100
TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Handsome Ancient Roman Bronze Spear Point Lapel Pin Oak Frame Plaque BC 100. CLASSIFICATION: Roman Bronze Socketed Spear Point Plaque. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Anatolia. First Century B.C. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 147 millimeters. Breadth: 28 millimeters. Socket Diameter: 13 millimeters. CONDITION: Good. Cleaned and stabilized. Moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting, corrosion, oxidation caused by contact with earth while buried) as expected with any buried metal artifact, but integrity intact. Good finish. Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is very handsome Roman bronze socketed spearpoint circa first or second century B.C. You can see there are some areas of corrosion due to the fact that the spearpoint ... morespent over two thousand years buried. Consequentially though the artifact is still more or less in one piece. It is nonetheless heavily oxidized. You can see that some of the socket has completely corroded away, and the blade edges of the spear are also oxidized. Unfortunately ancient metal, especially bronze and iron, tends to decompose in soil over the millennia. It is not too uncommon to unearth metal artifacts which are nothing more than crumbled stains within the soil(green for bronze, red for iron) You can sure see what was a metal artifact, but when touched it crumbles into the soil. Fortunately this bronze weapon was not unearthed in such an advanced state of decomposition. It obviously evidences considerably porosity, which kind of enhances its character, however the artifact is still fairly durable and relatively stable. Inasmuch as the spearpoint is too fragile to be worn or handled repeatedly. We mounted it onto this very handsome and interesting high quality open oak frame. The frame/plaque(approximately 12 x 10 inches) narrates a brief outline of the history of the Roman Empire, along with a very nice image of ruins dating from the Roman Empire, and a map
