Incredible estate find! This is a full two page spread taken from the English Pilot: fourth book, the first english cartography book containing the waters ... moreof the Americas. John sellers is one of the most celebrated cartographers of the era and his work is highly collectible. Having been appointed to his post in 1671 by Charles II, this book which collected and published between 1689 and 1794. Because this is only two full double sided pages from the book(page numbers 25-28) I am unable to determine what edition of the english pilot 4th book this is from. It is at a minimum 220 years old. Each page measures 11.5"x18.5" Meaning when unfolded it measures 23.5"x18.5" There is damage due to age and because it comes from a previously bound edition. Tanning due to age. Chipping and tears to edges, corners, and spine. Overall it is in good condition and printed on heavy stock paper. Page 25. 26 and half of 27 is a description of natural landmarks, rivers and areas of land in Virginia, Maryland and Carolina; cape Henry, willoughbey's point, point comfort, jame's river, york river, patuxen river, patowmack river, the ashley river in Carolina, port Royal harbor, and mentions of Florida. The bottom half of page 27 begins a description of the Caribbee islands. Primarily Trinidad, and contains a small map of Tobago. Page 28 is a large map of Barbados and a small description below. The plate marks from the plate pressed into the paper to make the map are still very visible(see pictures) It's a very beautiful piece and should display nicely.
