A rare Iberian seated bronze warrior. Dating to the 5th- 4th Century B.C. The nude figure sits on a thick platform. His legs together, right arm held ... moreupright and left held to the side. A quite abstract and pleasing composition, the facial features simple but powerfully executed, the thick hair swept back and the spinal groove clearly defined at the back. The attitude of this figure strongly hints that he was a warrior- his right hand likely held a spear or other weapon whilst his left may have held a shield. The Iberians were a proto-Celtic people from what is now mostly Spain and Portugal. In ancient times these peoples were regarded as fierce warriors. Often being recruited as mercenaries by the powerful civilizations to the south and east. The present figure was likely dedicated in a shrine or temple, by a donor who wished to be granted a favour by the presiding God. Height(excluding mount) 2 1/8 inches. Condition: Unrestored. Beautiful patina. Provenance: Ex R.L.B. Collection. Previously in the A. Tully collection, acquired prior to 1969, Ex. Christies 28/10/94 lot 65. Tully was a well known New York Philanthropist. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. A Truly INCREDIBLE Ring This ring was found in the Danube Valley and is not Roman. Because this ring is between 2,800 and 3,000 years old! This ring was old before the first hut was raised on one of Rome's fabled seven hills! This ring has a shamanic element to it. The bezel features an excellent representation of a stylized"RAVEN" or"HAWK" on a tear-shaped bezel that measures 13mm x 15mm and this is a design we do ... morenot often see on these"tear" shaped rings. Look closely at the design and you will see that it is a stunning abstractly designed bird figure. All parts of the bird are nicely represented. Including the beak, wing, tail feathers and especially the talons which seem poised to grasp something.
