Impressively large antique Victorian Pinchbeck carved shell cameo brooch; the scene from ancient mythology depicts Stylized goddess (Diana the huntress?) ... moredrawing her bow while standing within a small chariot pulled by two rearing horses; she is wearing a half-moon diadem and flowing classical robes - a winged putti is holding the reigns while Diana is aiming with her bow and arrow - or could possibly be the Greek Goddess Artemis - also bears some similarity with the goddess Aurora. The the oval shell cameo is framed by pinchbeck (gold plated on brass) love knot with leaves; there are incised signature and wording to the back of the shell see 21 photos Condition: the frame has some damage to leaves and a spot of lead repair by the pin - otherwise the cameo is in good condition. Completely intact. DETAIL: A remarkable hand carved wooden cowrie shell money pendant/amulet almost 3.000 years old attributable to the Western Zhou Dynasty of ancient China. Though the use of shells as“money” originated in Sumeria around 3,000 B.C. it was the cowrie shell that became the world’s longest-lived form of currency. The first use of cowries, the shell of a mollusc that was widely available in the shallow waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, was in China around 1,200 B.C. Historically, many societies have used cowries as money, and even as recently as the middle of the last(20th) century, cowrie shells were still used in some parts of Africa. As such the cowrie shell was the most widely and longest used currency in history. So important a role did the cowrie play as money in ancient China that its pictograph was adopted in their written language for'money' During the Zhou Dynasty four different forms of money developed in ancient China. Aside from the traditional cowrie shells. Iron, copper, and wooden forms of money

Ancient Celtic Bronze Bow Brooch - 100 BC
An ancient Celtic bow brooch of extremely rare form and featuring lotus flower decoration. Dating to the 1st century BC. Of elegant form. The sleek bow curving into a depiction of a lotus bloom at the head, the flower of the abstract style that predominated in Celtic art. Adorned with fine incised decoration, this piece has a visually arresting appeal. This form of brooch appears to be particularly rare, though it does appear to have a parallel in an example excavated in Romney Marsh, Kent. This striking piece dates to a period in which the British tribes were increasing their contact with the Roman world. Trading in grain, cattle, gold, silver, iron, hides, slaves and hunting dogs. With this increased contact came an increasing awareness of classical styles. The classical patterns that particularly appealed to the Celts were floral motifs, ... moreespecially the palmettes and lotus flowers that often appear side by side in Etruscan and Greek art, which the Celts rearranged into distinctive, abstract forms. As such, the individual who wore this brooch would have been intentionally emphasising their awareness of classical styles, without losing their own keen sense of ‘native’ identity. Height: 2 ¼ inches. Condition: Good. Unrestored and with a beautiful dark olive patina, minor wear to top of piece, as shown. Bespoke bronze mount included. Provenance: Ex.
