Because the mouth flairs out, more like an open jar, and there's no lip etc. to indicate it may have had one. I thought it would make a fabulous vase for you, or a perfect open jar to put your balls, shells.you name it, this jar will make them shine! It's an antique blown glass piece, and the color is a lovely bright light green. It's also large, measuring 11 5/8" tall, 7" diameter at the mouth and 6" diameter at the base. It's heavy, weighing in at a solid 3 lbs. The glass is thick, and it's filled with anomolies original to the making- I'm trying to show in in my close ups, even holding it up to the sky doesn't show you very well, though. There's lots of lines(the glass is very wavy inside) bubbles and burps, even on the base. That being said, there is absolutely NO damage at all to this piece- it's in amazing condition, and just drop dead gorgeous! Please ask if you have any questions. A large. Beautiful and high quality ancient Romano Egyptian glass bottle, of heavy spool type, dating to the 2nd- 3rd Centuries AD. Green in colour with short triangular body. Thick, cylindrical neck, wide mouth and rounded rim. A particularly heavy, thick walled and well made piece with a few small areas of iridescence. Flasks such as this would have been used for holding valuable cosmetics. Medicines and even poisons in antiquity. The heavy base would have given the piece stability. |This is one of the most wonderful items collected by my Grand farther. I am about to type what he had written in his paper work( Ancient Roman/ Egyptian blue glass jar 3rd century AD found in the eastern part of the Med sea 1876) we know he must have purchased it much later probably in his travels in the 20s when he travelled alone and collected a vast amount of all sorts, the jar has a round body 3 handles attached to the shoulder and trailed onto the rim with an indented base, its handles have an Roman look, inside the jar is a crusty with a multitude of coloured sand its size is approx. 4" high by 4" wide, this could be a real steal of a price but we would like it to go to a collector so please make an offer. Roman Mold-Blown Glass Jar CULTURE/ REGION OF ORIGIN: Eastern Mediterranean. Probably Syria-Palestine DATE: 3 rd Century AD DIMENSIONS: 5 cm(1.96 in. tall. 4 cm(1.57 in. wide at the rim DESCRIPTION: Intact. A small Roman glass jar of transparent. Nearly colorless glass with a slight green tint. The roughly apple shaped body is defined by 10 vertically oriented shallow indentations. The base is flat with no pontil mark. The neck is a broad funnel shape, ground down at the rim. The surface is clean but for a few patches fr soil encrustation and multi-colored iridescence. A stable surface crack runs across the base. This type was widespread in the 3 rd Century. It was manufactured by blowing the hot glass gather into a mold. PROVENANCE: Ex Los Angeles private collection. Acquired many years ago in Israel.
