On offer is this superb red jasper intaglio depicting the god Hermes(Mercury) who was the messanger of the gods. He is shown in the classic pose of holding a money purse and caduceus wand in the other. The beautiful deep red colour of jasper was particularly fashionable in silver intaglio rings from the late 1st century AD. The subject of Mercury was very popular with merchants and businessmen(since by wearing his image one would be invoking the powers of the god to the wearer) This intaglio would date to the 2nd century AD.
