The tiny plate measures 2 3/4" in diameter with a hand cut scalloped rim, impeccably potted and finely transfer printed with pearlware glaze. According to Coysh and Henrywood. This tiny piece of Chinoiserie, with elements of gothic and classical design, depicts a Queen escorted by a blackamoor holding a parasol and 2 children holding her train. Doris Lechler, in her book‘English Toy China’ attributes the pattern to Spode. According to the Transferware Collectors Club and others, it would have been made by Minton. It dates to 1820-1830. Like all known pieces in this pattern, this diminutive plate is unmarked. The quality of the form and detailing of the image is far superior to what would be expected on this diminutive sized piece. The plate is in great condition. With no cracks, chips, or repairs. Edge wear, consistent with age and prior use. Minor firing imperfections on back side only- glaze pops, ponding- original to the making. A nice example of an extremely rare miniature transferware pattern, offered as is. I came upon Dixie Beau at an estate sale. He was sitting amongst a room full of other dolls. The former owner was obviously a doll collector. Pinned to him was a tiny. Rusty safety pin and an old half-faded name tag. There is also another note pinned to him that is not totally legible in the photos. It reads: Rita. I want you to have this doll I got a long time ago from GA. Don't believe you have any black ones. 2. A Real Photo Postcard(RPPC) advertisement for Dixie-Beau and the other Black cloth dolls made by the Dixie Doll Co. from the 1940s that I found while researching Dixie Beau. An RPPC is an original postcard card printed on photographic stock and produced from a photo negative. It is not a screened print of any kind. Generally real photo postcards were made in smaller quantities than printed postcards. Are prized for their detail, and thus are usua lly more valuable. The postcard is unused and in excellent shape as seen in my photos. I took Dixie Beau and the postcard to a local Black history museum to get their take. They agreed that both indeed appeared authentic. They also offered to buy him from me on the spot. But instead, I am offering up the 2 collectibles together in one bid. With NO RESERVE! Dixie Beau is exactly the way I found him: great shape. No tears or rips, but his suspender has come loose-an easy tack. Also, his right eye looks fragile(I did not want to risk using glue on him-I'll leave that to the new owner) He stands about 11 1/2" tall, although he prefers to sit.
