Antique British Cast Iron & Brass 'Spirits Be Gone' Bed
VERY unique antique(circa 1860-1870) British iron and brass double/full size bed with canopy. Dimensions: 53" wide by 85" long. Has 3 round medallions on the footboard set in round bulleted brass frames with inlaid copper and mirrored stars used to ward off evil spirits. This was accomplished by setting mirrors around the bed. And when not-so-friendly spirits would see their reflection in the mirrors they would get frightened and go packing! The bed is missing three of the tiny brass balls that go on top of the finals on the head and footboard in addition to what would appear to be larger brass knobs or balls that would sit on the top 4 corners. A queen size mattress fits nicely. There are hand-painted flowers twining up the canopy posts, some are worn off with age, others are still there. A bed warmer was typically filled with warm coals. And then it would be put under the covers to warm the bed. They were largely forgotten with the invention of rubber hot water bottles, then later electric blankets. The lid of this is hand chased with an ornate design. The handle is wrought iron with a bead and rattail end. The hand hammered iron has character that you just don't see very much anymore. This measures approx. 41" long, 12" wide, and 4 1/2" tall. We are calling this shabby chic due to scratches, dents, and dings. There is some oxidation on the iron mounting ring as well. Overall, a neat piece from years gone by! Good Luck! Very old, very unique, very cool. Could be used for architectural decor. Purchased from an estate. Headboard is 20" tall, the foot-board is 18" tall, and both are 16" wide. No rails. It is very old, and the iron is aged. When I purchased it I didn't even know there was brass detail, with just a little work it started to shine up. In 10/2007 this bed was purchased with the brass spray painted gold and the iron main frame required a new powder coating. Inside the iron we found part of a newspaper page in Dutch. Photographs were sent to a professional brass bed restorer in Canton Connecticut and his bid is summarized. As follows: Restoration Fee: $13.650.00. Includes custom iron supports for mattress/box spring. Powder coating the iron, polish then lacquer or clear coat the brass, replace missing finials, and disassemble/ reassemble and a custom shipping crate. As a professional antique appraiser and restorer. His normal appraisal fee was $300 for a certified letter on his letterhead. Restored bed ... morevalue- $15.000 to $18,000. Wow. His cost to restore the bed and the value of the restored bed led me to develop a plan for local restoration. RESTORER PROVIDED A VALUABLE HISTORY OF THIS BED Circa 1900. A customer would order a bed from the cheapest strip down model to a bed with every embellishment available. This bed has the extras! 4 decorative ropes of roses 4 urns with ram head handles 6 wreaths with French bows 3 beaded circles on the foot stand IRON& FRENCH BRASS BED ¾ SIZE- RESTORED More about the restoration: Support rails for the mattress/box spring forged by a local iron worker. The iron bed stand portion professionally sandblasted and powder coated. Brass embellishments were professionally polished and lacquered by Noles Davis of Dallas Texas. Brass finials(20) had modern octagonal nuts that were replaced with the proper round ones drilled and tapped to 1/4– 20. Early 1800s antique primitive brass and iron bed warmer with a wrought iron loop ended handle. Rather than the more common wooden handle. The pan lid is made of brass with a hand tooled symmetric design. The pan bottom is hand hammered. The long handle is secured with rivets to the warming pan base. We don't list a lot of furniture on eBay. So I'm not sure where to start with this matching headboard and footboard from an antique brass and cast iron bed. So let's start with some measurements. They are about 54" wide and the headboard is 61" tall and the footboard 37" The iron cross pieces are designed with tapered conical holes where the side rails attach, while the upper parts are made of a mix of brass and iron(the magnet test yields a variety of results) suggesting that many of the parts that appear to be brass might just be a brass wash or perhaps a brass tube sleeving a heavier cast iron tube. They have some dents and scratches and discolored areas, and, although it's been a while since we set it up, I seem to recall it's pretty fiddly to put together, with those vertical slats developing a tendency ... moreto slide out of their mounting holes. Up for sale is a nice set of bed rails that were used with old iron beds and brass beds. They have the cone shaped end that many old beds had. They show a little difference in wear as seen in last 2 pictures. But the measurements are basically the same. 73-1/2" on one rail and 73-9/16" on the other(pic#2) The cone itself is 1-5/8" tall, top diameter is 7/8" and the bottom is 3/4" It projects 3/4" from square base. They are clean and straight. There are two drilled holes in one of them. But doesn't affect their function. I know that a fraction of an inch can make a difference how they fit so they may need a little tweaking( shimming or sanding) to fit your bed. Please be sure they will work for you before buying. Your buying it"as found" it has not been cleaned and has heavy rust but is not rusted out. These often don't just drop in and fit your bed, 1/16" can make a big differance in fit. This is a set or pair of iron bed rails typically used on antique iron beds. They measure 74" long from tip to tip and 72 3/4" long not counting the pins and have tapered pins which are 3/4" across at the top. Antique Iron and Brass Bed footboard or headboard. This old beauty is 47" tall and 54" wide(full size) The main section of iron is 4 1/2" in diameter! Overall it is in very good condition. At the top sides it measures about 56" This is very heavy. So I am offering pick up only in Manalapan, New Jersey. The brass is all old and original, as is the iron part.
