Very rustic and hand-made. This rare genuine panel would be once a sliding door for a traditional closed bed cupboard from Brittany, lit clos breton" ca. mid years 1800. It is embellished with copper nail heads and carries the traditional ornament of carved spindle circle(rosace en roue de charrette) to its upper part. As often seen in the Cornwall area. Splendid carved Bed. Adorned with hand-carved acanthus leaves and peonies(not wood appliqués) Although the bed isn’t signed. It was clearly made by a master craftsman. The wood looks like cherry(I’m not a wood expert) The bed appears to have been made in the late 19 th Century or early 20 th Century. It was certainly constructed before mattress sizes became standardized. The frame will holds full-size mattress with some extra space all around. There is some age-appropriate wear: scuffs and dings especially on the feet and some on the rails. There is a dark grain(not a crack) and a couple of light scratch marks on the foot-board. There is a small hole on the edge of the headboard that looks as though it was made with a tack. Could easily be filled. I purchased the bed from an antique dealer in upstate NY about 25 years ago. This carved wood panel is approximately 26" high. 9 1/2" wide and 1 1/4" deep, and has a gold paint over what looks like red from the look of the sides. I was told by the owner that it came from an antique store in Tucson. AZ, and that they were told it was an antique bed panel from an opium den in China. It does look old, and it appears a piece of thin wood was applied as a backing to the carved area. It seems to be in pretty good condition, although there is a crack in the upper left corner of the carving that is clean and looks rather old.
