This French antique bed is crisply carved and absolutely gorgeous. The frame is exquisitely embellished with scrolls of acanthus foliage, twisted rope carving inset in the molded frames, large bold scrolls terminating most major joints and repeating laurel leaves along the rails- however, due to the warmth of the painted surface, the overall effect is rather reserved and works well with a pretty broad range of decor. The frame retains it's original iron L brackets, each corner joining with large steel bolts projecting from the tenon into the mortise of the footboard and headboard legs. Paul Leka(February 20. 1943– October 12, 2011) was an American songwriter, Producer, pianist, arranger, and orchestrator. As a producer, Mr. Leka’s credits covered a wide range— the soft rock of such 1960s groups as the Left Banke and the Peppermint Rainbow, the easy listening orchestras of Peter Nero and Paul Mauriat, and singer-songwriter Harry Chapin. For Chapin, Mr. Leka produced four albums, including 1974’s“Verities& Balderdash, which yielded Chapin’s signature song, Cat’s in the Cradle.Mr. Leka is best remembered for his success with“Na Na Hey Hey, a No. 1 record on the Billboard charts in 1969. The Story Behind the Mansion this Bed came out of. Completed in 1906 by an heir to the Colgate toothpaste fortune for the modern equivalent of $43M. Ausnit partied with Manhattan stars like Cary Grant. After Ausnit's death, the stunning mansion was sold and by 1976 belonged to songwriter Paul Leka. Leka's widow currently owns the home and chose to sell off most of the contents. This fancy bed being one of them, she sent through auction where I became the new owner. Some of the furniture was originally purchased by the Colgate family and remained in the home until now. I can not be sure if Mr. Colgate purchased this piece in the early 1900s or if this was added in the 1970s by Mr. Leka. Regardless it came out of one of the most notable homes in the east-coast. This bed dates back to the 1870s. Looks to be English. I believe the man and women on each side maybe represents the"his" and"her" side of the bed. We are pleased to offer this EXQUISITE antique to older vintage(1930s/40s) single bed(including rails) and matching nightstand. The pieces are constructed of mahogany and have been painted at some point. They are exceptionally ornate and feature French. Louis XVI details. The footboard features a triple arched detail and is faced with two fluted, dimensional columns. The fluted pattern is incised and diagonal which is very striking. The legs of the footboard are tuned wood with a block feature. There is also a round, fluted"acorn" shaped section with a unique, carved arch detail. An acanthus scroll pediment is attached below the footboard and it has a double wreath feature in the center section. There is also a beaded trim, which extends the length of the footboard, just above the legs. An incised, rope trim is found at the top. ... moreThe headboard is also ornate with a center acanthus crown at the arched top. This is flanked with a carved finial detail on each side. The headboard features the same, incised columns as the footboard. The edges of both the footboard and headboard are beveled so that the pieces are not just"flat" with no dimension. The matching two drawer nightstand/table features the acanthus scroll trim, beaded trim and leg pattern that are present on the footboard. It has an acanthus crown at center of the stretcher area. The two drawers have dovetail joints with the trim faced on the drawers. THIS IS A VERY ELEGANT AND BEAUTIFUL SET. It is in EXCELLENT structural condition. I am assuming that the set was painted to mask some minor cosmetic age as there is evidence of some surface chips and"dings" under the painted finish. The outside dimensions are 64 inches wide, 41 inches to the headboard, and an amazing 94 inches to the finial on the canopy top. It has a floral carved wooden frame along the top that connects the four barley-twist posts together. The posts come all the way down on the headboard and footboard. The headboard has raised multi-shaped panels, and it has clip-in rails that make the bed nice, tight, and secure. This is a beautiful. Unique piece that will add charm to any home. Bed was crafted in Michigan and has a sophisticated and unique design. Own a piece of American history. Original finish restored. Not refinished, i.e. original finish is intact. Most of the gilding is original with it fading in some areas and touched up in others. All carving intact. The carved urns on the headboard each have a small piece of carving missing. Where the side rails meet the head and foot boards some small mouldings are missing.
