Antique Carved Wood Sign "Mafiusi" Pre-Sopranos Old Paint Figures Pub? Italy
I find the most unusual things sometimes. This came up at a garage sale in central NJ. I called an Italian friend of mine and asked what the word meant. She seemed to think it means a member of the Mafia. I don't know. I will tell you what I do know: Here is a sign( that measures 33.5" long x 6 inches high and it is 1" thick. It is deeply carved with five figures. I have no clue what these men are up to but they all carry sticks accept one fellow who seems to be climbing on a table to the top of a chimney. To each side you will discover winged griffins( On the bottom of the sign is carved"MAFIUSI" The condition is good for its age. Which I don't know but I am going to hazard a guess and say very old, antique even. The places on the sign that have suffered small chips look like very old nicks and the paint looks ... morelike it once was awesome and colorful and now is dull and faded with a very nice patina. The craftsmanship is very good, the carvings are half an inch deep giving it a true 3-D feeling. I think the griffin on the right side has been re-glued. Genuine vintage French porcelain enamel house number sign (other no's available)
Genuine vintage French enamel house number sign. This was sourced from a brocante seller here in South Vendée and was apparently manufactured around 1920's- 30's. There are some light scratches and small rust marks to the edges which is commensurate with the age of the item and I feel adds to its rustic vintage charm. I also have other numbers available in the same condition as this: 70. 82, 86, 95, 101, 103, 110, 133 and 146. Please contact me if you are interested in any of these other items.

Antique Wooden Chromolithograph Target Shooting DIsc Elk Stag Germany circa 1936
Antique Wooden Chromolithograph Target Shooting Elk Stag from Germany dated 1936 CONDITION This wooden target disc has been shot at. There are small lead bullets embedded in the disc as well as indentations where weakly propelled bullets did not fully puncture the target and bounced off. There are no complete holes through the target. This shooting disc recently came directly from Germany and is dated using the old German system(date. Month in Roman numerals, year) 9.XII.36(December 9th, 1936) The painted edges of the plywood disc are chipped from wear and age and the printed image. Which looks like a Chromolithograph, has yellowed slightly and has a small tear at the top. There is a slight warp in the disc but it will hang beautifully on a wall. There are no hanging provisions provided. The Oak Leaves(a symbol of honor in Germany) Are hand ... moredrawn in black ink and hand painted painted with watercolors. There is some fading and smearing of the ink lettering. The back of the disc indicates some water damage, thus the slight warping of the disc. The disc appears to be made of several layers of thin plywood and is 3/8 inch thick. SIZE: 19 3/4 inches diameter 3/8 inch thick HISTORY AND SELLER COMMENTARY Chromolithography was a time consuming color printing process developed in the 1800s by lithographers using several layers. Each color having to be painted on by hand with tiny dots. The printed paper image of the elk is glued on. German shooting targets from the 1800s and 1900s incorporated realistic paintings of animals that hunters and target shooters used to acquire and refine their shooting skills. This particular disc is an"Honor disc" target disc. It was created to"honor" the shooter. Roughly translated the disc reads: Ehren-Scheibe- Honor Wheel" or disc) Fur Schutzenkonig Franz Hummer- Erschossen 0.XII.36- For champion shot protector Franz Hummer- shot dead 12/9/1936" that is to say. Beautiful Antique Chicago Cast Iron Street Sign - S Harrison St - Circa 1930 EC
You are bidding on a beautiful 2 sided cast iron street sign that came from S Harrison St in Algonquin. A Northwest suburb of Chicago, IL. The sign stood from the 1930's til the 60's when it was replaced by lighter, more modern signs. The sign measures 25 1/2" in total length. It weighs roughly 10 pounds. It can be placed on an even shelf with no issues or displayed on a pole. This is a cool piece of Chicago history, which is my home town and was where it was originally purchased over 40 years ago. Its still in pretty great shape and is fully readable. I'm not sure if its a reproduction or was hanging in Jacob Strahl's Billiard House. This is a TRUE Junk Iron Piece(as opposed to some of the replica lightweight ones coming in from China these days) Nice and colorful with good weight. Of COURSE it has weld burns as any TRUE Junk Iron piece SHOULD. and of COURSE it's not"perfect"TRUE Junk Iron isn't SUPPOSED to look"perfect"because the imperfections are what makes it UNIQUE and truly HAND constructed.
