Lovely estate find! This offering is for a ca. 1940's Sessions movement carnival clock with a western cowboy flair of saddled horse figure. Wagon wheels and twisted rope. These clocks were prizes or premiums at state fairs and carnivals in the 1940's- cashing in on the popular cowboy culture of Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry and Lone Ranger. The clock is constructed of cast white metal(magnet does not stick) in nice detail. The horse is saddled with complete western tack including a parade saddle with tapaderoes and a bridle with bead chain reins. The metal is finished in an overall goldtone wash or paint. The best thing about it is the reliable works inside and the amazing cathedral gong which I timed at echoing for more than 20 seconds after striking. Its got a grained wood veneer which has been covered over by some well meaning restorer, hence the spill on the back so it would look even nicer if it was brought back to the original wood. The chrome bezel around the convex glass opens and closes nicely and I like the stylish plinth feet at each end which sets off the Art Deco style. This clock has an ordinary case but a fantastic movement and the clearest Westminster song ringing out every quarter of an hour. Looks English but is possibly German. The attractive grained wood veneer which apart from a split visible in the last photo is in pretty good nick but might look even nicer after waxing or polishing. The movement with three trains is in great condition for its age and is working extremely well. The bezel is a cut above the average with its clean chrome look around the convex glass which opens and closes really nice and snugly. The hands have a distinctive reverse arrow piercing.
