It is beautifully modelled in metal which has been gilded with gold leaf to give an appearance similar to that of carved wood and gesso. The dial is enamel on copper lettered in blue with separate minute ring. It is complete with original finely fretted gilt brass hands. The back of the clock has an old repairers label. The French m ovement has the Japy Freres clockmakers mark on the movement backplate. It is of excellent quality as is to be expected of this maker. It has the superior pin-pallet escapement and rack striking. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. This came from a New Jersey estate where I was told it works and includes its pendulum and key which I show in my last photo. It has been hanging in this home as a decoration. Not wound in years and I don't dare fiddle with it as I am not a clock expert. This has beautiful gold solid bronze ornate leaf with berry decoration and measures 25" high X 12" wide. A highly collectible French cartel clock with a spectacular frame inlaid with beautiful shimmering abalone. Which my photo's do not do justice to. I am fairly sure the works are not original. The clock measures 24 inches high x 16 inches wide. The clock strikes on the hour and 1/2 hour but recently keeps time for about 5 minutes and then stops so it does need some attention. Estate Sale French Gilt 1889 Medaille D'argent Bronze Wall Clock. In Very Good Condition- Well Kept and Maintained On the Movement it has a circular stamp etched in the body that reads" Medaille D'argent- 1889"I cannot make what is inside the circle. This was a working clock. Not fully tested. It has a Porcelain Dial and Chalice with a bowl of Grapes on the top. Below the dial is an Angels face. The Bronze is sculpted with a leaf/vine design with an Angels Face. Measures Approximately; Height 18" Dial 3.25" Dial Bezel 4" As with all old/Antique items- Clocks. ~ French- Circa 1880 ~. ~~ Excellent condition. Fully overhauled ~~. A very large(3 ft in height) and stunning original antique French cartel wall clock. It is beautifully modelled in gilt bronze. In the baroque style with elaborate, stylised architectural detail including the fancy broken arch pediment, columns to the sides and profuse acanthus decoration. It is formed as a large back plate onto which the clock is fixed, mounted with a shield shaped dial surround. The large dial itself is formed as part of the case and is 8" 20 cm in diameter) It is mounted with 12 individual enamel cartouche letters. The hands are fretted and blued steel. The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. This is another one of those circa 1900 examples but this one is unsigned.===== It was about 1890 when the German clock factory system became fully mobilized in the Black Forest region of southeast Germany. Prior to that time clockmaking was mainly a cottage industry with most people living in the Black Forest area playing a role in the making of clocks. The Germans learned from the American factory system of the last half of the 19th century. And clockmakers like Junghans adapted his clockmaking to createing movements by using interchangeable parts. There were several very large German companies operating by 1890. They took the most saleable and popular clock designs being made in the USA, France and England, and began to copy them and produce them at a less expensive price. This became so commonplace that by 1910, the German clock industry had surpassed the English, French and even the American output. They exported most of what they made. It is in the style of Louis XVI and has a beautiful original dore gilt finish. The clock does show signs of age with some minor cracks and chips in the clock case(see photos) The clock keeps time well and has a small key to adjust the hour and minute. There is no key to wind the clock. But we wound it by hand to make sure that it works. Overall this clock is in very good antique condition. 15" tall. 7" wide and 2.5" deep.
