After the original sculpture by Pierre-Philippe Thomire(French, 1751-1843) The figures are set against a green marble pillar in the form of a cenotaph tomb which houses the original clock movement. We have found only numeric markings on the movement and the maker is unknown. Bronze and mixed metal mounts include a laurel-enframed lyre on sides and Juno on peacock driven chariot, and the rectangular base is decorated with gilt bronze mounts and raised on bronze feet. A very fine and wonderful antique. Circa 1870's, French slate and ormolu bronze mantel clock set in the Neo Grec, or Aesthetic, style. It is in working order: tells the time, gong chimes the hours and halves. The exposed escapement is fine over the white enamel dial. The back door is glass with brass frame. The front door has a thick glass bevel. Clock measures13-1/2" tall by 9-3/4" wide by 5-1/2" deep, the candelabra 21-1/2" tall by 8" square at bobeches. Excellent condition: polished slate without discoloration, teeny chip to slate on clock case front. Small chip to the side slate on one candelabra plinth. Rare French Perpetual Calendar Mantel Clock Signed'Cromey. Bristol' Circa 1850 Very nice gilt bronze French Perpetual Calendar Clock with marble base. Enamel dials and the case is glazed(glass) on the sides/rear. The c lock's movement operates properly and the clock is in excellent condition. The 14 day movement strikes the hours and half hours on a bell with a Brocot dead beat escapement visible through the upper dial and a compensated pendulum of brass and steel peculiar to Ellicott's design. The gilt engraved dial mask; the upper white enamel dial with blue steel'Breguet' style hands and Roman chapter ring; the lower perpetual calendar showing: day. Date, month, equation of time, and moon phase. The numbers on the calendar dial around the inner circle indicate the difference between solar and mean time. Which shows ... morethe'equation of time' This allowed people to set their clocks by using their sundials. The movement signed'Cromey. Bristol' and numbered 31945. The calendar movement numbered 31756. The case is glazed on three sides and open to the front; multi-colored gold ormolu on a white marble base; surmounted by a'ruffled pigeon' numbered 39703. William Cromey is listed in Britten’s as a clockmaker and jeweler in Bristol. 1842. As with many French clocks in the 19th century they were made in France but sold in England. All gilded bronze ornaments around the edges are present. There is a minimal lost of the boulle decoration. The clock had two names one associated with the maker of the body Roussel A Paris. The Brussels(Bruxelles) place name that you have pictured refers to where it was retailed, there should be a maker's/retailer's name at the top of the dial but frankly it's academic as the clock's value lies mostly in its decorative appeal. Despite its apparent qualities I'm afraid your clock has suffered a great deal in the current market downturn- especially with large decorative and late French clocks- it would probably have fetched over £1000 five or so years ago. Pendulum is original and ... morematches number on movement 2445, and key and may or may not be original.we cannot say a absolute certainty, though the provenance suggests that it is, as the estate from which it was acquired had a grand collection of French antique clocks, all of which are in the process of being tested and evaluated at time of this listing CONDITION: Marble had been cracked and repaired in 2 spots of thin pieces of marble.one very small chip of the right front corner of the flat piece of marble on uppermost this piece(a diagonal 1/2" wide across front x 3/4" deep with a point-to-point diagonal of 1" total- PHOTO) Not affecting the main part holding movement and dial, and the other one somewhat larger on the lower right edge going backward to rear(a diagonal 3" long across with maximum depth inward from edge being 1" just below curved scrolled piece which has not been damaged, barely if at all visible from front of clock- PHOTO) also on a thin flat oval piece upon which the main part with movement and dial are.It looks a lot worse than it was, as there is a great deal of aged, excess glue on the repair in the rear, but will come out with a citrus-type cleaner such as goo
