Clean, very hard to find spoon marked BEARD which I am finding trouble getting a lot of information on although I have found a few more pieces marked ... morewith this name but so far no more with the running man in a square box Hallmark or mark as this one which leads me to believe it is Sterling Silver and that is a foreign Sterling Hallmark. I so far can't confirm this so if you know please inform me. At any rate it is a nice, rare collectable piece. I have many more great antique and vintage items also so please check out my other listings. I'll appreciate it if you spread the word and follow me. PLEASE NOTE: This auction is for a case and dial only- please read the entire description. A vintage Ships Clock case. Dial and dial backing plate presumed ... moremanufactured by Seth Thomas in the U.S.A. The 5-3/4" diameter 12 hour dial with Roman numerals originally had a silvered finish; the finish is worn through to brass and there are only remnants of the painted lettering. The words. SETH THOMAS" are written on the dial between the 2 winding holes, although they are difficult to see. There is a slight 1/2" long crease/dent to the dial between the winding hole and the 11 o'clock position. The seconds register is just below the number XII with the slow/fast time regulator just above the XII; with the STRIKE on/off slot located at the 9 o'clock position. The brass plated steel movement support plate has 4 standoffs on the rear with which to attach a movement. The 3 holes line up for mounting it to the three case brackets. There are 6 holes in both the backing plate and the dial are in the same locations. Although the holes in the dial are are not the correct corresponding size; they are a smaller diameter. The case is brass with a nickel finish which is worn and has a light corrosion throughout. There are mounting holes located at the 4. 8 and 12 o'clock position. The hinged bezel has a flat spring latch which secure the bezel in the closed position. A couple of the screws are mismatched and there is a missing nut. The case measures 7" in diameter X 4" deep. The case has scratches and discoloration due to wear to the nickel plating. And a dent to the top side. The case has a perforated screen at the 6 o'clock position so that the sound of a strike might be heard. The glass which covers the dial area is in good condition. The inner nickel plated bezel has a great finish; although it has 3 bends to the lower lip at the 2. 4 and 6 o'clock positions; presumed from incorrect screw sizes installed in the past. The distance between the 2 winding holes is 2.55" Because of the

Gilbert Clock Company was formed at Winsted, Conn. to succeed the Gilbert Manufacturing Company(1866-1871) which had been dissolved after a fire destroyed ... morethe factory. These firms had grown out of the clock making operations of William L. Gilbert(1806-890) who, since 1828, had been involved in various clock making partnerships in Bristol, Farmington and Winsted, Connecticut. In July of 1873. The new factory complex was completed and manufacturing commenced. George B. Owen(1834-1916) had come to Winsted in 1866 as General Manager and ran the firm for nearly 50 years, designing many interesting cases and patenting several clock movement features. Owen also operated a concurrent clock business at Winsted between 1875 and 1894. In 1897. The Gilbert firm built a four-story building for a new case shop and another building by 1900 for storage and shipping. A three-story office building was built in 1902. The recession, which began in 1907, along with the financial pressures of their recent expansion headed the firm in a decline that culminated by forcing George B. Owen and his sons to relinquish control in 1914 Bankruptcy and liquidation were barely avoided in 1914 and a new manager. Charles E. Williams, was appointed and served until his death in 1930, just a few months following the stock market crash. Pressures of the Great Depression

The Welch name was gradually phased out as Sessions started making their own line of clocks, and by 1920, they started making higher quality clocks such as regulators, and started phasing out the old style pressed-oak kitchen clocks and black mantle clocks. Trouble arrived again for the Sessions Clock Company in the 1930’s. Of course the depression slowed sales tremendously, but in addition to the economic slow down was the popularity of the‘new’ synchronous electric clocks that left Sessions with a large inventory of their spring-driven clocks. Connecticut in 1785, went to work for clockmaker Eli Terry in 1807, bought out Terry’s factory(together with Silas Hoadley) in 1810, and in December 1813 bought out Heman Clark’s clockmaking business in Plymouth Hollow. Thomas continued Clark’s wooden ... moremovement tall clock production. And about 1817 began making the wooden movement shelf clock. These were cased in pillar and scroll cases until 1830, when the bronze looking glass and other styles became popular. In 1842, brass movements were introduced, and first cased in the popular O.G. case(which was made until 1913) Wood movements were phased out in 1845. In 1853 Mr. Thomas incorporated the Seth Thomas Clock Company, so that the business would outlive him. Mr. Thomas died in 1859, and Plymouth Hollow was renamed Thomaston in his honor in 1865. Mr. Thomas was very conservative. And after his death many new styles of clocks were introduced by his sons. Regulator clocks were introduced in 1860. The patterns and machinery for these had been purchased in 1859 from the creditors of bankrupt clockmaker Silas B. Terry. Spring driven clocks were introduced ca. 1855–1860. Perpetual calendar clocks were made from ca. 1863–1917. Some of the most popular later types include walnut kitchen clocks, made from 1884–1909; marble clocks, 1887–ca. 1895; black(Adamantine finish) wood mantel clocks, ca. 1885–1917; black enameled iron cased clocks, 1892–ca. 1895; oak kitchen clocks, 1890–
