French 18th Century Nicolas Poussin Painting Reproduction Oil on Linen
On July 9. 2011 this painting was brought to the Minneapolis Convention Center Antique Roadshow Event. Two appraisers reviewed this painting at that time. During 2012 I also had a local appraisal company(Appraisal Specialists Midwest) review the painting. In addition and during 2012 I had Bonham's Auctions review this painting along with Alan Fausel, painting specialist on Antiques Roadshow who was making the rounds with them during a Twin Cities home tour appraisal fair. I did not share with any of the people involved what the others may have concluded just to see what came up. In all three circumstances all the appraisers had the same independent conclusion. All agreed that this is a late 18th century(circa 1790-1810) reproduction of a Nicolas Poussin(1594-1695) masterpiece. They also agreed that this form of high quality reproduction ... morework was common to the time period and produced for wealthy tourists traveling Europe. Moses is distinctly represented in the work and there are similarities to this painting and other original Poussin's referencing Moses, however, I have yet to discover which original work this is a reproduction of. The painting is oil on linen and in exceptional condition. There is only a slight and very minimal amount of crazing. The piece looks to have been cleaned and re-varnished sometime within the last thirty years. The fame is attractive but it is uncertain if it is the original frame to the piece. On the reverse it seems clear that the painting was stabilized and strengthened within the frame probably at the time it was last cleaned. The frame is painted gesso on wood. There are a few very minor areas of gesso loss from moving over the years. A new cleaning would probably brighten the piece although it does not appear to be terribly dirty and the current varnish has not yellowed much and appears to be contemporary. Up for auction is very hard to find and beautiful movement for antique French portico/empire clock. Manufactured in France as I believe around 1830. The movement has a nice metallic dial in a good condition and beautiful gilded bronze bezel. The movement was professionally cleaned and oiled, mainsprings were changed and now the movement is very clean and works perfectly- it runs and strikes in the hours and half hours. French Gilt Mantle Clock With Girl Holding Basket REPAIR/PARTS
First the damage or missing parts: One hand is missing(photo) There is no key to the clock.There is a piece missing next to the girls feet(about 1 1/2" x 1"Photo) By her right foot you will see a fan looking decoration-it is missing to the right side of the base where it should be(photo) The back of both legs each have minor nicks in them but not the sides of the leg's(photo) In one photo you will see what appears to be a branch with leaves to the right of the dial.I put it in place for the purpose of the photo. It appears in one photo unattached. It just needs to be attached and it would look good.The glass and frame are missing that cover the dial. There is a chip(s) next to the numeral III on the dial where it has been worn over the years due to winding(photo) I do not see anything else that is a problem. Clock is 12 1/2" ... moretall. 11" wide and about 5" deep. There is no damage to the girl or anything else. The cover for the back as well as the piece for the hammer to strike are present. I removed the works from the clock and found that they do work very well if the pendulum is not in place. With the pendulum attached the clock will work for about 15 to 20 seconds. Without the pendulum they work just fine. If this piece was cleaned and balanced as needed I see no reason why it would not keep good time. The striker does work. I see no indication of any damage internally to the works. On the inside of the dial frame stamped in the metal is' 890* on the back plate appears'A*M and 890 5*5(photo)the pieces match. Rare French Gilt Bronze Verde marble Lyre Clock. The clock stands 21 inches tall. 8.75 inches wide and 6 inches deep. The french 8 day time and strike suspension spring anchor movement is stamped AD MOUGIN with silver bell. No damage or repairs to the clock. Engine turned dial with outer porcelain chapter ring and french moon hands. Clock keeps excellent time. Great detail to the gilt bronze mounts depicting a sunburst. Cherub, and flora decorations. This clock is in good antique condition with some damage and wear that is described below. All of the dore bronzework is beautifully patinated and we guarantee that the metal is bronze. Not spelter or some other base metal. The gilding shows a very small amount pitting and tarnishing consistent with its age. The only damage we note on the bronzework is that we can see that there were originally 5 flowers in the crown. One of the two marble pillars shows a repair(see photos) There is also minor staining of the marble. The eight day time only clockworks with a silk thread suspension do not show any maker’s marks. Antique HENRY MARC FRENCH Ormolu SEVRES Porcelain PUTTI CLOCK Cherub Brass Gilt Offered for sale is this beautiful antique French gilt metal clock. It was made by Henry Marc of Paris. The putti are taking birds from the nest at their feet. The open cage sits next to them. The two Sevres style porcelain panels also feature putti or cherubs with birds. I am not a clock expert so please bear with me. The clock has a pendulum that that is numbered"347" the same as the movement- so I think it's original. The key was made in England so I doubt that is original. I gently wound the clock a little(without the pendulum installed) and it runs. But obviously too fast. It chimes on the hour. I hung the pendulum where I thought it should go and the clock did not run very long. Please email me if you have any specific questions, and I'll ... moredo my best to answer them. SIZE: The clock is 12.75 inches tall. And approximately 13.5 inches wide. It weighs 11 pounds 3 ounces. The clock face is just under 3.5 inches diameter. CONDITION: There are some rubs and tarnish to the finish. I haven't tried cleaning the clock. I don't see any repairs or damage. In the photos. You can see what looks like some"separations" in the metal but it is not damage- some pieces were cast separately. Please see the close up pictures for the best description of the cosmetic condition. Antique French Clock Gilt Bronze w Cockerel, Jewels 19C (4553)
Antique French Gilt Bronze Clock w Cockerel. Jewels Antique gilt bronze mantel clock. Made in France, 19th century. Measurements: approximately 7 1/2 inches high. A little over 4 1/8 inches accross the front of the base. The case stands on 4 turned gilded legs. Base of white marble with an inset row of ormolu scrolls in the front. Rectangular steps. Tapering towards a marvellous cockerel/ rooster finial. The rooster being a symbol of France, this clock would have some French significance. Golden gadrooning around the base and at different levels. The front with fantastic applied ormolu flowers and foliage surrounding a protruding ring of paste'diamond' gems which enclose the dial. Above, casket like dome surmounted with the cockerel. Excellent modelling with fine detail of feathers and musculature and one can almost feel him rustling ... morehis tail and crowing. Sides of case are fluted. The dial is Classic French mastery and beauty: white enamel with the numerals. Both Roman and Arab(for the hours and the minutes) in dark, cobalt blue. They are surrounded on the inside by a ring of flower swags- exquisitely enamelled in minute detail. The hands of the dial are also quite lovely- very fine gilt openwork. The mechanism of the clock can be seen behind a glass door. We do not have a key. Nor are we clock experts, but I believe that this clock can be put to work with very little effort because when I moved it, I heard a constant tick tock. The Clock was designed by the famous French designer Leon. Hatot as signed and was then made by the clock firm ATO C1930. The Clock is an electric clock which I think would be referred to as a"electromagnetic" clock. Which he was known for producing. As you can see the clock ... moreneeds a battery installed. My neighbor hooked the clock up for a few moments for me to try it out, and the clock does in fact run once hooked up. Although I could not find a mark on the glass, I was told the glass portion of clock was possibly produced by Lalique for ATO. I did also see a couple other small desk clocks by Leon Hatot, also marked ATO that the glass was attributed to Lalqiue which were sold at Christies auction house. The Clock is a nice size for display measuring approx 10" tall by 8-1/2" across the face or 7-1/2" across the base. The Clock is also in excellent condition overall with the Glass showing no chips, cracks or repairs and the"Bakelite" base showing no cracks or repairs as well. The inside of the Clock is well shown in our photos for you to judge condition. I really have no idea what the clock would be worth never seeing another example quite like this, or of this larger size. But I do know some small size glass Leon Hatot clocks have sold at the higher end auctions well into the thousands of dollars so I think this could be a very desirable find. Japy Freres Gilt Cartel Wall Clock. ~ French- Circa 1870 ~ ~~ Excellent condition. Fully overhauled ~~ A very decorative antique French Japy Freres cartel wall clock. It is beautifully modelled in metal which has been gilded with gold leaf to give an appearance similar to that of carved wood and gesso. The dial is enamel on copper lettered in blue with separate minute ring. It is complete with original finely fretted gilt brass hands. The back of the clock has an old repairers label. The French m ovement has the Japy Freres clockmakers mark on the movement backplate. It is of excellent quality as is to be expected of this maker. It has the superior pin-pallet escapement and rack striking. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. Antique wall Clock French original 1800-1900 French Country w/ orig. shelf
This beautiful vintage wall clock is French Country in style. The green and gold tones with pink flowers have a wonderful patina. The is some very minor cracking in the wood due to the age and the way it was made. This is where the wood was glued together before it was carved. This is a wall clock meant to sit on the matching original shelf but could stand alone on a mantle. The works are marked Unghans with a large letter J inside of a star as shown in one of the photos. The clock while sitting on the shelf is 35" high x 19 1/2" wide. It does work and dongs on the hours and on the half hours. It combines superb gilt bronze figures with a white marble base and a blue& white porcelain column which houses the fine small movement. This clock stands just under 14 inches high. This is antique French clock movement. Manufactured by famous clock master Mougin(has his stamp on the back plate) as I believe around 18 5 0. The movement came from old clock master estate and looks very clean(shining) and works(there was note in the box from clock master that the movement was cleaned and oiled. That the mainsprings were changed and that the movement works perfectly) The movement runs and strikes on the hours and half hours. Though I did not test it for a long time. The distance between keyholes is approximately 38 mm. B etwee n center and keyhole 14 mm and the center and the axle for a d justment 42 mm. I n the box together with the movement there was also the bronze bezel with the front door with the porcelain dial and pan. It will go with the movement. The dial has small damage near numbers 7 and 11. The dial fits the ... moremovement. The case is deliberately flat in design so that the balance of the figures and rococo elements is emphasized. And stands on a 3-legged rococo base. This clock is signed on the dial"Planchon a Paris" Planchon is a well known 19th Century maker of superior French clocks with high-style cases. This clock is 14 inches high. The dial is only 1 3/8 inches in diameter. The case is in original condition. And its surface retains much of the original gilt finish. The movement is beautifully made and finished. Very unusual and interesting black mantel clock. Onyx? Slate? Marble? Maybe a combination? There appears to be brick used in the interior of the base. Appears to be gold surrounding the porcelain clock face. it is not tarnished. I have no idea of its vintage or country of manufacture. France? Germany? I haven't seen another. Could be custom-made? This Sèvres and gold-gilt bronze clock stands 22 inches high. 12 inches wide and 6 inches deep near its base. It has been on my mantel for about fifteen years and adds incredible beauty to my dining room. The clock uses a S. Marti et Cie. mechanism which dates between 1867 and 1889. The clock has been checked and lightly cleaned by a professional clock maker and is in excellent and accurate working condition. MECHANISM- The clock has an 8-day bell-striking movement which is stamped“ S. Marti et Cie” in the center with“ Medaille de Bronze” in a circle around it. Samuel Marti was awarded ... morethe Bronze Medal in 1860. The mechanism and the pendulum have the same serioal number. Samuel Marti et Cie was a well known clock maker in Paris in the mid eighteenth century. The Medaille de Bronze stamp was used during the period 1867– 1889. Clock has its original pendulum and key. PORCELAIN- The detail of a cherub on the porcelain face is very detailed and in excellent condition. The face and hands are original. There is a Sevres mark under the lid but it would requiring disassembling in order to get a good photo of it. It is the crossed“L’s” with“S” inside. Similar to Kovel’s Dictionary of Marks. Page 226. This mark was used starting in 1771 and into the second half of the 1800’s. ORMOLU- The ormolu is magnificent and very detailed. The metal is solid bronze with heavy gold gilt. There is some slight“greening” at the joints which is barely noticeable unless you are looking for it. Owner purchased the clock from an antique dealer in 1998 for $3.150.
