TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Egyptian Shabtis by Harry M. ... moreStewart. NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 64 pages. Publisher: Shire Egyptology; 1995) The ancient Egyptians believed that the statutory agricultural labor imposed on them in order to utilize the Nile floods would continue in the afterlife. To avoid this irksome duty they devised the shabti. A figurine which they hoped would deputize for them on being activated by the appropriate magic spell. If the idea smacks of'draft-dodging' the figures are nevertheless of considerable artistic interest, and provide information about Egyptian religion, society, personal names, titles, etc. The iconography, inscriptions, materials and manufacture are described with criteria for identifying and dating the various types. A concise up-to-date treatment in English has long been lacking, and this account will be useful to students, art historians, collectors and others. CONDITION: NEW. New oversized softcover. MUSEUM OF EARLY SOUTHERN DECORATIVE ARTS ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & AMERICANA
Southern Perspective. A Sampling from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts” Edited by Gary J. Albert. Published by MESDA in 2005. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A wonderful survey of 40 objects- furniture. Ceramics, silver, paintings, from the MESDA collection. Out of print as hardcover. MESDA's website notes- MESDA is the realization of a vision shared by two extraordinary individuals: Frank L. Horton and his mother Theodosia"Theo" L. Taliaferro. Who were pioneering antiques dealers and collectors who dedicated most of their lives to raising awareness of and appreciation for domestic objects made in the South. During the first half of the twentieth century, southern antiques were mostly dismissed by scholars and ignored by collectors. A movement to challenge the existing attitudes began in 1949 ... morewith the first Williamsburg Antiques Forum at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, which included a seminal session that called attention to the lack of information about southern craftsmanship. The intense study of specifically southern antiques began with the 1952 Williamsburg Antiques Forum, which coincided with the first definitive exhibition of southern furniture, Furniture of the Old South, 1640- 1820 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and culminated with the opening of MESDA in 1965. The results of the museum's efforts to fulfill its mission have extended well beyond the exhibition of the collection to include groundbreaking field research programs, award-winning publications, a respected research center and decorative arts library, and exceptional educational programs such as the Graduate Summer Institute cosponsored by MESDA and the University of Virginia. 1880 PARIS CHAIR CATALOGUE Early Photos FURNITURE STYLES Book RARE Architecture
Up for auction is a rare item. A circa 1880 chair company catalogue, containing a collection of photographs of various styles of chairs, with title SIEGES RUSTIQUES on front cover. Some of the styles are named. But aside from the title on the cover, no manufacturer is listed. This was likely used at a furniture store for reference. Or given to customers to give them an idea of what chair they might like to have built or ordered. Catalogue is stringbound in stiff wraps. Rear cover has piece from left side missing, but tucked inside book. About 30 unnumbered pages, with one or more photos of chairs on each page, some with movable piece to see what a chair would look like with or without arms. Rare. My guess is that this was published in Paris circa 1880. Good luck! Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution

ANTIQUE AMERICAN COLONIAL FURNITURE -CLASSIC ISRAEL SACK 1932 COLLECTION
An Interesting Auction Catalog- One Hundred Important American Antiques” The catalog to an auction held by Anderson Galleries in New York on January 9th. 1932. Sale 3940. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Colonial and Early Federal Furniture. Silver and Porcelains of Distinguished Provenance by and attributed to Chapin, Cowell, Dummer, Frothingham, Goddard, Gostelow, Hurd, Le Roux, McIntire, Phyfe, Randolph, Revere, Savery, Seymour, Soumaine, Titcomb, The Townsends, Whittemore, Wilder, The Willards, acquired from notable collections by Israel Sack" A 1998 New York Times article noted- The history of Israel Sack Inc. is a rags-to-riches tale. Israel Sack. An immigrant cabinetmaker from Lithuania, opened an antiques store on Charles Street in Boston in 1905. He was attracted to America's early urban furniture, the ... morefancy mahogany and walnut chests, highboys and chairs made in Boston, Newport, R.I. Salem, Mass. New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. He practically invented the field that is known today as Americana. When he started, American furniture was not a collectible form, his son Albert recalled. There were no shows, or any American furniture collections in museums. In the 1920's, Israel Sack moved to New York and started to amass first-rate furniture, and collectors who could afford it. Israel Sack was a brilliant marketer. He sponsored research[and] lectured widely. In the early part of this century, when American society was enamored of English antiques, he persuaded people to pay a premium for pieces made in America. You can tell American furniture by its accent, he liked to say. He argued that American furniture has its own qualities; instead of ornamentation and gilding, it has form, line, proportion, craftsmanship and rarity. He declared it an art form. From the 1920's until his death in 1959, Israel Sack sold to the top collectors of Americana: Henry Ford, Henry Francis duPont, Mabel and Francis Garvan, and Charles K. Davis, president of the Remington Arms Company

WILLIAM STARBUCK MACY -1906 CATALOG OF ANTIQUE AMERICAN & ENGLISH FURNITURE
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The W. Starbuck Macy Collection. Rare Examples of old English and American Furniture. Pewters, Potteries, Glass, Historical China, etc. including choice and original specimens by Chippendale, Sheraton and Hepplewhite” The catalog to an auction held in New York by James P. Silo on November 15-24. 1906. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The sale of an early collection. Most of the illustrated items are furniture. With some historical Staffordshire thrown in. Mr. W.Starbuck Macy. As set forth in the following catalogue, may be summed up in a very few words. Every article contained therein is positively genuine and guaranteed, a rather unusual state of affairs when one comes to deal with the great names of Thomas Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton. The public in general are so apt to attribute ... moreevery piece with a ball-and-claw foot to Chippendale, especially in chairs, and every piece having a bit of inlay to Sheraton, and to confuse the work of Hepplewhite with that of Chippendale, that when one comes to examine the collection made by Mr. Macy it is something of a shock to find that Chippendale has shown in his book of designs only one small hall chair with even a suggestion of a ball-and-claw foot, and that this design is not by any means characteristic of his work, but was also used by other makers of his day. Necessarily all of Sheratons pieces were not inlaid, any more than were the works of Hepplewhite and Thomas Chippendale himself. The matter of inlay was simply a matter of fashion, and we find all of the great furniture makers at the time using it. Mr. Macy has shown wonderful knowledge in assembling so vast a collection of the various domestic works of art of a bygone age, and it is doubtful whether there is a man with his catholic knowledge and ability among the present day connoisseurs in this line. The manufacture of the modern antique(to use an anachronism) has been so widespread that it has only whetted the appetite of the real collector f

Book: ART NOUVEAU FURNTURE BY EMILE GALLE -FINE ANTIQUE FRENCH FURNITURE
Galle Furniture” By Alastair Duncan& Georges de Bartha. Published by the Antique Collectors' Club in 2012. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Emile Galle was one of the great names of the Art Nouveau movement in France. And founder of the famous Ecole de Nancy. A polymath and committed social activist, he was best known for his glasswork and faience. Furniture became his third discipline after experimenting with the manufacture of wooden bases on which he could mount his glass vases. Following the French tradition of furniture decoration known as marqueterie, his work is characterised by its meticulous decorative veneers, stained with subtle organic dyes; and panels inlaid with stunningly intricate country scenes and flowers. This important book outlines all of Galle's major works of furniture, from the pieces ... moreuniques that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed between 1889 and 1904 at the annual Paris Salons and two World Expositions. The recent emergence of many of his objets de luxe enables the reader to understand many of his pieces for the first time. Written by Decorative Arts specialist Alastair Duncan, Galle Furniture documents the history of Galle's furniture production from his favourite motifs to the ways in which he used furniture design to express his social and political ideals. Duncan includes an encyclopedic range of models created in the Galle Workshops both during and after his lifetime. Beautifully illustrated, and containing translations of Galle's'Notes to the Juries' of the World Expositions, this stunning publication will leave the reader captivated by this remarkable expression of the new art that changed the European aesthetic forever. ANTIQUE PAINTED FEDERAL and COUNTRY FURNITURE BY AMERICAN WOMEN CABINETMAKERS
Women's Painted Furniture 1790-1830. American Schoolgirl Art” By Betsy Krieg Salm. Published by the University Press of New England in 2010. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Beautifully illustrated. Comprehensive study of women's painted furniture, a long-lost art that sheds light on women's lives in the early republic. In this long-awaited tribute to women's painted furniture, author and artist Betsy Krieg Salm rediscovers a style of early American decorative art still largely unknown to curators, antique dealers, art historians, and the public. She documents the socioeconomic, cultural, and aesthetic history of the form, which includes such items as sewing and work boxes, face screens, and tables. Salm carefully chronicles the process itself, describing a selection of cabinetmakers, woods, varnishes, ... moreand paints, along with the specific tools and techniques used by women artists. Salm analyzes the styles, designs, and patterns of more than two hundred pieces. Treating these objects as documents of women's daily lives, she shows the close relationship between painted furniture motifs and those of needlework and other decorative arts of the period. Thanks to her scholarship, this art form may now receive the recognition it deserves in the broader genre of American women's art. Women's Painted Furniture presents a comprehensive collection of images, most of which are not available elsewhere. Primary sources include recipes, patterns, genealogies of artisans, chemical analyses of antiques, instructions in methods and technique, and the original, mainly English, sources of artistic inspiration for painters and needle workers. KATHARINE PRENTIS MURPHY COLLECTION -AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES 1983 AUCTION
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Katharine Prentis Murphy Collection from the New Hampshire Historical Society” The catalog to an auction held in Bolton by Robert W. Skinner Inc. on September 24th. 1983. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An important auction of small 17th and early 18th century American furniture and accessories such as lighting. Pewter, metalware, and so on, sold by order of the New Hampshire Historical Society, to which they had been donated. Katherine Prentis Murphy was an important mid-generation collector. In"The Antiquers" Elizabeth Stillinger explains- Katherine Prentis Murphy(1884-1967) has been remembered in the world of American antiques not for innovation, but for style. It is impossible not to recognize a Murphy room. The elements are bold alternating black and white diamond checked ... morefloors; curtains, fabrics, and bed hangings in dramatic flame-stitch patterns, and furniture with high arching curves, deep carving, and crisply turned legs and stretchers. The theme set by these striking patterns and shapes is then embellished with copious sets of pewter measures, plates and mugs; numerous shining brass candlesticks, and ornamental hanging embroideries and prints. The whole effect is charming- and utterly unrelated to historical reality. Mrs. Murphy personally supervised and supplied furnishings for period rooms all over the East and as far afield as Texas, where her good friend Miss Ima Hogg donated her own house to the Houston Museum" DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5"x9.5" About 100 pages, 342 lots, many black& white illustrations, prices realized list. HISTORIC DEERFIELD COLLECTION - ANTIQUE AMERICAN COLONIAL & FEDERAL FURNITURE
The Furniture of Historic Deerfield” By Dean A. Fales. Published in New York by E.P. Dutton in 1976. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The beautiful and scholarly catalog of this very important collection of 17th and 18th century New England furniture. The Flynts themselves purchased most of the items in the collection. So it not only shows a fine cross-section of the best New England furniture, but is also an example of the taste and collecting eye of a single pair of astute and unique collectors. The Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association website notes- Henry Needham Flynt(1893-1970) with his wife Helen, founded Historic Deerfield in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of George Converse Flynt and Helen Pratt Needham. In 1920 he married Helen Margaret Geier(1895-1986) of Cincinnati, Ohio. ... moreThe Flynts lived in Brooklyn Heights for several years and then decided to move out of the city. They built a home in Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1929. They had three children, including one son, Henry Jr. who went to Deerfield Academy in 1936. By 1941 Henry Sr. was on the academy's board of directors. Their connection with headmaster Frank Boyden and with the town of Deerfield itself led the Flynts to purchase their first property in the town in 1942. Soon they purchased four more properties, viewing their mission for the town as one of preservation and restoration, a mission that had expanded to include the entire village center of Deerfield. To furnish their houses they began purchasing antiques that often had some historical association with the property. In 1952, to assist their efforts, the Flynts formed the Heritage Foundation, which was renamed Historic Deerfield in 1971. Henry Flynt closely followed the foundation's activities. His involvement in Deerfield history led to his membership in the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, Deerfield's first historical association, serving as its president from 1949 until his death in 1970. Helen Flynt's involvem

New York Design Center History/1926 Furniture East Of The Mississippi Huge Book!
Description As described in the title and shown in the scans below. This is a rare publication that seems to have been produced to coincide with the opening of the New York Furniture Exchange in 1926(now called the New York Design Center) The magazine seems to. Mostly, represent the news, values, politics and advertising of the New York Furniture Exchange at 206 Lexington Ave. NYC though it purports to represent the furniture industry in general. It was published by The Exhange Publishing Co. Inc. at 15th East 40th Street. The Editor was I. Rosenbaum and the Vice President was Emily Francis Hooper(The front board states that she was the owner of this volume) All of the weekly issues. Volume 1, Number 1 to Vol. 1, No. 28(June 23, 1926 to December 29, 1926) have been bound and stitched into a single volume hardcover that measures approx. 2.75" ... morex 9.25" x 12" and weighs a hefty 11 pounds. There are approx. 1,100 pages with single issues running from 24 to 83 pages. The book is in good condition being whole. Complete, generally bright, clean smooth and unmarked with notation or underlining. There is more than moderate wear to the marked and stained boards/spine but a very clean and bright interior text block as shown below. The hinges are started but holding and at least one page has come loose but remains in the binding. This is not the result of being shaken or worn but because the stitching was done very close to the edges of the spine in order to keep the entire content accessible. We found one closed tear and one open tear in the text block. The collection of 26 issues seems to be very rare as we could find no reference to the magazine anywhere on the web. It would seem to be of historical value regarding the New York Design Center and the American/NYC Furniture Industry in general. I Promise to: Safely pack your item(s) using both new and recycled materials Not charge you for"materials" or"handling" and to only charge you what the post office charges me- plus or minus a few cen

A very interesting book even though it was published in 1973 in London, England.
