The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio Translated by Frances Winwar- Complete and Unabridged. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 666 pages. Publisher: ... moreThe Modern Library; 1955) The Decameron' is a fascinating example of classic literature that remains fresh and entertaining today. Written in the mid-14th century. It concerns the first major outbreak of the black plague in Europe, which emerged in Italy in approximately 1347. Boccaccio begins, in the prologue, by stating his purpose for writing the book- namely, to entertain literate women with nothing else to do with their time. The story itself concerns ten young Florentines(seven women- Pampinea, Filomena, Neifile, Fiammetta, Elissa, Lauretta, and Emilia; and three men- Panfilo, Dioneo, and Filostrato) who flee the city in hopes of escaping the plague. To occupy themselves during this time, they tell each other stories, with each person telling one story per day to make a total of 100 stories over the course of the entire book. At the beginning of the first day, Boccaccio provides an excellent and detailed description of the plague itself. The book ends with the refugees returning to their homes, and a closing epilogue from the author. CONDITION: Shelf wear and soiling to Dust Jacket. Yellowing pages and in good condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Decameron is an entertaining series of one hundred stories written in the wake of the Black Death. Recounted by young citizens of Florence who have fled the city in order to escape the plague. These young unmarried nobles, the"beautiful people" of the age, decide to wait out the Florentine plague in their country estates, amusing each other every evening with earthy stories, some outright bawdy, others pointing to a moral. This Italian book, written in 1351, inspired Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Balzac, and remains one of the most enjoyable an

EARLY ANTIQUE OAK FURNITURE -RENAISSANCE & MEDIEVAL -CLIVE SHERWOOD COLLECTION
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Clive Sherwood Collection. Early Oak Furniture. Metalwork and Works of Art” The catalog to an auction held in London by Sotheby's on May 22. 2002. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Sotheby's press release noted- The collection was amassed by avid collector and Patent Agent. Clive Sherwood, who was born in Birmingham and lived in the area until his death in Bromsgrove in June 2001. His passion for oak stemmed, at an early age, from an 18th century oak table, accepted by his father in payment of a bad debt, which stood in the hall of his family home. Clive Sherwood’s aim was to collect the very best, and upgrade when he could afford it. The fine collection of Oak Furniture, Sculpture and Works of Art, dating from the 15th century onwards which is being offered by Mr Sherwood’s Estate, ... morecomprises more than 400 lots and is expected to fetch £1 million. The care of the furniture has been supervised by Mr Sherwood’s wife, Rosemary, who found, as the collection grew that she was faced with a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, as when anything new appeared a space had to be found. Hans-Christian Bowen, Sotheby’s specialist in charge of the sale, said: It is rare that one sees a large collection with such depth and quality and containing so many items that you would like to own and take home. It stands as a testament to Clive Sherwood’s knowledge and love of his subject. The Sherwood Collection is] believed to be one of the finest collections of Oak to come onto the market in recent years. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 6.5"x8.5" 274 pages, 406 lots, color illustrations. Appell and has remained unseen in this private family's Georgian-style home. The collection spans from the William and Mary to the Federal Period and includes examples from New England, Pennsylvania, New ... moreYork and the South. John B.A. Nye, Director of Sotheby's American Furniture Department, said: Like the Copelands and the du Ponts, the Appell's sought the guidance and expertise of legendary dealer Joe Kindig, Jr. to furnish their Colonial-revival, Georgian-style home with period furniture and antiques. The result is a collection comprised of 18th and 19th-century pieces that serves as a timeline of the development of furniture craftsmanship in America. ANTIQUE ITALIAN FURNITURE -MEDIEVAL RENAISSANCE CLASSICAL -1918 ODOM 2 VOLUMES
A History of Italian Furniture from the Fourteenth to the Early Nineteenth Centuries” By William M. Odom. Published in New York by Doubleday. Page& Company in 1918-1919. Limited to 500 sets. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A large. Well-illustrated classic on Italian furniture of the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classical Revival and Empire periods. Odom published his work when interest in and appreciation for the arts and crafts of the Italian Renaissance was peaking in America and England, and it followed several other noted English language studies of Italian woodwork, interiors, architecture and carving. In many Renaissance-era craft centers, but especially in Italy, the same workers who created the beautifully-carved church and house interior woodwork and sculptures also made the furniture, so the subjects ... morewere inextricably linked. Odom, however, was the first English-language writer to focus on furniture, and he drew his examples mainly from American, Italian, and some English, collections, both public and private. Many examples were drawn from the stock of high-end New York dealers such as Bardini and Volpi, and others came from the N metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria& Albert. The rest were in private hands; some of those examples have since migrated to museums, others have changed location or disappeared from public view entirely. Indeed, the second volume which begins after the Renaissance and features Baroque and Classical pieces, is drawn almost exclusively from private collections, as most connoisseurs of the period, Odom included, viewed these styles as debased and vulgar, and unworthy of museum collections. For present-day fans of 17th and 18th century work doom's text can, therefor, be a bit challenging, or perhaps aggravating, but it stand s as a perfect mirror of the scholarly tastes of his period. Whether one agrees or disagrees with some of his aesthetic judgements, Odom's work remains a cornerstone of furniture literature, and a magnifice

Frances Morse’s heritage was distinguished; she included Quincy and Adams families among her forebears. Extensive ... moregenealogic material has been written on the family; some is held in the archives of Tower Hill Botanic Garden. Clary Goodhue(1812– 1881) Both of whom were widowed at the time of their marriage in 1848. Edwin Morse, a native of Andover, Vermont, came to Worcester in 1846. In time, he became one of the city’s leading citizens, serving as alderman, director of the First National Bank, president of the Mechanics Association, and trustee of the Worcester County Horticultural Society. He early became a skilled mechanic and in time a partner in Lathe and Morse, a machine tool business located at one time on Austin Street, within walking distance of his home. The rise in wealth and prominence of Edwin Morse. One of thirteen children who left Vermont at the age of nineteen, was a Horatio Alger story that repeated itself often in the mid-nineteenth century. Illustrated History of Furniture. From the Earliest to the Present Time” By Frederick Litchfield. Published in London by Truslove& Hanson in 1907. 6th edition. ANTIQUE CONNECTICUT FURNITURE- FREDERICK BARBOUR COLLECTION & SUPPLEMENT
Frederick K. and Margaret R. Barbour's Furniture Collection[with] A Supplement” By Paul Koda. Published in Hartford by The Connecticut Historical Society in 1963& 1970. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The Barbours were discriminating collectors from the second generation of American furniture collecting. Specializing in Connecticut furniture. Born in 1894 in Connecticut. Mr. Barbour was christened Fritz Krupp Barbour, but while standing in an army recruiting line in 1916 it occurred to him that having a Germanic first name followed by a middle name which was also the name of German's leading producer of artillery shells might not be popular in the Army, so he gave his name as Frederick K. Barbour, and such it remained for the rest of his life. After the war he joined the family business as president of the ... moreAmerican branch of The Linen Thread Company. After spending several decades in manhattan the Barbours transferred to Litchfield County, Connecticut, and began to seriously collect antique Connecticut furniture. In the spring of 1971, the Frederick& Margaret Barbour Furniture Collection, was given to the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford. Judging from this catalog. The Barbours were also involved in a contest to see how many highboys you could stuff into a house. The Supplement features fourteen additional pieces purchased after the first catalog was issued in 1963. Includes several more highboys and chests-on-chests. My God, what were they storing? Which included extremely fine 17th and 18th century American furniture as well as some early American silver and glass, and some fine English lustreware and Wheildon pottery. Louis Guerineau Myers was among the pioneering collectors of American decorative arts in the first decades of the 20th century. Fellow collector R.T.H. Halsey wrote an appreciation ... moreof Myers after his death for the 1932 auction catalog of his collection of antique American furniture. Silver, pewter and accessories, in which he notes- He knew infinitely more about the touch of the old time craftsman and the wiles of the present day forgers than those of us who frequently called upon him. His judgment was unerring. There is no one to take his place. His ability and zeal as a collector has long been evidenced in his collections, and his much sought-after advice greatly improved the quality of several of the important collections of American furniture assembled during the past decade. It is safe to say that had not Louis Guerineau Myers lived, the knowledge of much of the excellence of craftsmanship of our eighteenth century cabinetmakers would not yet have been known to us. Revolutionary 1950s designs, including Harry Bertoia's wire Diamond chairs— studies in space, form and metal" and Eero Saarinen's futuristic Pedestal Group, were followed in the late 1950s by the rise of consumerism— and the eccentricities of kitsch— which in turn gave way in the 1960s to the explosion of Pop. The following decades were equally rich, with the development of Counter Design by Ettore Sottsass, the factory lights and scaffolding supports of High-Tech, the Craft Revival, Art Furniture, Ergonomic Styling, and much else, with each trend continuing to show intriguing national and regional differences. Francis Shaw Collection American Furniture 1935 Auction Catalog Realized Prices
A vintage copy of The Francis Shaw Collection of American Furniture and Decorations auction catalog published in 1935. The auction was held on December 12. 13, and 14, 1935 at the American Art Association Anderson Galleries at 30 East 57th Street in New York City. I have seen other copies of this catalog available from various online sources, but this is the only one I have seen with all of the realized prices noted for each item that was sold, making this nice reference work even more interesting. Calculations at the back of the catalog show that the sale totaled $58,855.50 over the three days. Book does show some signs of age and use. The pages have yellowed somewhat. And the cover over the spine is split although the book is still intact. There is a significant bump on the upper right corner that shows as a slight crease on all of the ... moreinterior pages. Still this is an interesting book, especially with the inclusion of the prices. Shipping for this item will be $6.00 via USPS Priority Mail within the USA. Payment must be made by PayPal. Item will ship as soon as payment is received. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*3A%3Cd%3Ff6%3E-1440bd1e70e-0xe2-

ANTIQUE ENGLISH VICTORIAN FURNITURE -THE REVIVAL STYLES - by Symonds & Whineray
Victorian Furniture” By R.W. Symonds& B.B. Whineray. Published in London by Country Life Ltd. in 1965. 2nd printing. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: It is not always appreciated that there were as many changes and trends in furniture design in the reign of Queen Victoria as there had been in those of the previous five sovereigns. Therefore. In the space of some 50,000 words, this book can attempt only a general survey of Victorian furniture and its use and place in the Victorian home. Discussion of any one aspect in great detail has not been possible; the Exhibitions, wood-working machinery, papier-mache and the Arts and Crafts Movement, to name but a few, are all subjects, closely connected with furniture, which have been or could have been expanded into works of their own. It is hoped, however, that enough has been ... moresaid on each subject to give a balanced picture of furniture throughout the Victorian era" Actually. B.B. Whineray protests too much. This is a well illustrated study of English Victorian era furniture which does a very good job exploring the development and influences of the styles, the methods and materials used, and the social context of the movement. Symonds, one of the leading authorities on English furniture, died during preparation of the book, and it was completed by Whineray, his assistant. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8.5"x11" 232 pages, color frontispiece and 281 black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: The covers have some light wear and scuffs(please see the photos. American Furniture. Understanding Styles. Construction, and Quality” By John T. Kirk. Published in New York by Harry N. Abrams in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: What style is it? How is it put together? Is it real or is it a fake? How can I make it look its best without destroying its value? John T. Kirk answers these and many other questions about when. Where, how, and even why a piece of furniture was made. The book moves sequentially through major design periods, including ... morethe popular William and Mary and Queen Anne styles, Rococo and Chippendale, Federal, Shaker, Modern, and Revival. Sollo Rago-20th Cent. Modern Furniture & Design Auction Catalog Oct 27-28, 2007
Sollo Rago-20th C. Modern Furniture& Design Auction Catalog Oct 27-28. 2007- Thick catalog NUMBER OF LOTS= 1 TO 1105-thick catalog- Most lots illustrated in color. Great catalog, LIKE NEW CONDITION- This is really a m ust have for collectors. And those interested in modern design. The number of lots, over 1000, most illustrated provides an encyclopedia of good images and descriptions, and prices of modern furniture, glass, pottery, and decorative items. Auction Catalogs. Like the one shown here. Are one off printings. They are printed by auctioneers for specific auctions. They are never reprinted, since the auctioneer needs to protect the copyrights and images of various owners who are selling their merchandise through the auction. This makes many of the auction catalogs collectible, since the supply is always limited- and auctioneers ... moredo not like the heavy expense of overprinting catalogs. Auction Catalogs provide a valuable source for descriptions and images of collectible antiques. Objects, fine art and collectibles. These images and descriptions are very difficult to find in full detail and completely elsewhere. Catalogs help determine relative values of the objects being sold, as many come with auction estimates. Catalogs are a valuable research and visual resource within specific categories. Shipping information- Items will be shipped 3 to 5 days after cleared payment is received. The shipping is through USPS. We will separately quote international. Or priority, or express shipping, or shipping through other carriers. In case of shipping damage. Take photos of the item and the boxes they are in. Saved the materials and packaging. Foreign customs duties are the responsibility of the buyer. At times International shipments can come later than anticipated because of Customs slow-ups. Colonial Furniture of West New Jersey” By Thomas Smith Hopkins& Walter S. Cox. Published by The Historical Society of Haddonfield in 1936. Edition limited to 300 copies. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The work of an early collector. And more of a tribute to enthusiasm than scholarship. The authors make no attempt to identify cabinetmakers or even the location a piece was made, but they do present a fairly complete provenance of each piece, most of them having been passed down in the same family since the 18th century. As such it becomes a de-facto study of what well-heeled 18th century families in West New Jersey were purchasing from cabinetmakers in New York and Philadelphia. FAKE ANTIQUE FURNITURE - 1931 CLASSIC - ALTERED CABINETRY by NEFARIOUS DEALERS
The Gentle Art of Faking Furniture” By Herbert Cescinsky. Published in London by Chapman& Hall in 1931. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: One of the most influential and best-loved books on fake furniture and its attendant hazards. Fakers, detecting alterations, etc. As collecting"old things" became more popular at the end of the 19th century and start of the 20th, the trade in restored(faked) furniture exploded, with able cabinetmakers and unscrupulous dealers happily pasting genuinely old parts together to create"complete" examples of rare pieces, usually with no notice to the purchaser that any restoration work had been done beyond a brisk dusting and perhaps a new coat of varnish. Into this morass of confusion, collusion and corruption Herbert Cescinsky, longtime dealer and the author of more ... morethan half a dozen respected books on antique English furniture, clocks and interiors, happily waded with this much-needed book. Ames& Ward call it"literate and entertaining" And go on to note that its lessons, though decades old, apply"with equal force today and almost appear to have been written as a cautionary for some modern historians-even though the remarks are directed at the collector of English furniture, students of American objects can profit by many of the general observations. See, in particular, the list of questions stated in Chapter 5, Detective Methods and the Problem of Restoration' DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x10.5" 168 pages plus 288 black& white plates. CONDITION NOTES: Covers lightly dusty. Some splits to the cloth along the hinges. Pages lightly toned, several with minor"offsetting" shadows from old paper inserts, but otherwise clean and nice, with a tight binding. Eighteenth Century American Arts. The M. and M. Karolik Collection of Paintings. Drawings, Engravings, Furniture, Silver, Needlework& Incidental Objects Gathered to Illustrate the Achievements of American Artists and Craftsmen of the Period from 1720 to 1820” By Edwin J. Hipkiss. Published by the Harvard University Press in 1941. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first edition of this well illustrated and important catalog of this major collection of American furniture. Silver and accessories. This beautifully printed volume, set in Monotype Bembo and with full-tone collotype illustrations, established a high visual standard for furniture catalogs that was emulated by Joseph Downs in the 1950s and Morrison Hecksher in the 1980s. The catalog includes 125 examples of high-style furniture, the vast majority from Massachusetts ... moreand Rhode Island, although some superb Philadelphia objects are included. These objects are not included in Richard Randall's 1965 catalog. Karolik's musings, As I Reflect upon the Collection" provide a fascinating look at the mind of an idiosyncratic collector" Ames& Ward. Maxim Karolik(1893-1963) was a Russian opera singer. Immigrant, and art collector and benefactor who cut a swath through the Boston and American collecting scenes. The magnificent bequests of American furniture and paintings he and his wife made to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts earned them a place in the pantheon of Boston's patrons of the arts, and their rediscovery and championing of the works of Fitz Hugh Lane and Martin Johnson Heade, along with 19th century American fine and folk artists earned them a place in American collecting lore. The Karoliks deflected such honors, and in an open letter to the MFA's Director, Maxim Karolik declared"We are not'Patrons of Art' or'Public Benefactors. We refuse to accept these banal labels. We accept with pleasure only one label: Useful' Semowich 1352. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.25"x12" 366 pages

ARCHIVE OF NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND COLONIAL FURNITURE PICTURES -WAYNE PRATT LIBRARY
Antique Newport Furniture Picture Archive- Connecticut. 2000s. DISCUSSION: An odd item from the reference library of noted Connecticut Antiques& Americana dealer Wayne Pratt: it is a folder of annotated photocopies of photographs of antique Newport. Rhode Island furniture. The source of the photos is not clear, but from some of the pen annotations it would appear they were from photos Pratt took himself, rather than from secondary sources such as books. Some of the pages have pen notations, and there are detail shots of some pieces. Altogether there are about 30 items included, mostly desks, highboys and tables, and some have two or three pages of the same piece, stapled together, showing different details. An interesting archive. One wishes there was more information about the pieces, but what it is is what it is. DESCRIPTION: Folder ... moreof photocopies. About 60 sheets. CONDITION NOTES: Minor soil.
