We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. For well over a century. The world has noted the distinctive chairs made by Shaker communities throughout the eastern United States. A writer for House Beautiful suggested at the beginning of the twentieth century that"If you own a Shaker chair, preserve it with great care, for it will soon be considered an antique, and a rare one at that. In this definitive book, that statement is verified as the authors examine in depth the styles and production techniques of chairs made at ten Shaker communities during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historical and contemporary photographs, extensive journal and account book references, diaries, postcards, catalog advertisements, and detailed line drawings are all used to document the chairs' history. Readers will find valuable information on identification of chair types and origins as well as an analysis of design and construction. An essential resource for collectors, historians, designers, and devotees of antique furniture. SO in SK

1790-1840 FANCY AMERICAN FURNITURE, PAINTED CHAIRS, TEXTILES, CERAMICS, More!
American Fancy. Exuberance in the Arts 1790-1840” By Sumter Priddy. Published by the Chipstone Foundation& the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Between 1790 and 1840. Millions of middle-class Americans throughout the nation encountered“Fancy” they rode in a Fancy sleigh, dressed up in Fancy clothes, blew their noses in Fancy handkerchiefs, bought goods at Fancy shops, ate at Fancy tables on Fancy dishes, and slept under Fancy coverlets. Not just fancy but Fancy: an early nineteenth-century cultural phenomenon born out of new and enlightened ways of seeing, understanding, and responding to the surrounding world. Fancy expressed itself in just about everything that pleased the senses; generally colorful and boldly patterned, it elicited delight, awe, surprise, whim, and caprice. Whether ... moreexperienced in the form of painted surfaces, kaleidoscopic quilts, or imaginary landscapes, Fancy engaged the emotions and expanded the imagination, expressing the core of human fancy. American Fancy offers an appropriately fantastic experience of this uniquely American sensibility. Author Sumpter Priddy has assembled and produced an original oeuvre in the field of decorative arts, going beyond the traditional modes of furniture analysis, which concentrate on style, history, and construction, to consider the perceptual and emotional responses through which the original users and viewers would have interacted with these material things. To this end he employs the interpretive methods used in the fields of literature, fine arts, philosophy and even psychology. Rich, fully illustrated, wondrously researched, and bound in a cover that imitates a typical Fancy pattern, American Fancy does its marvelous subject true. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5”x12.5” 267 pages, color and black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: There is a long. Warm gift inscription on the title page from the author. Minor wear. Spine label peeled a bit at the bottom, but otherwise clean and nice, with

Auction Catalog of Rare Antique American Furniture & Historrical Items. Colonial
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 An auction catalogue for an auction which took place at Sotheby’s in New York. On 20 January, 2006. As the title says, the auction was for“Important Americana: Including Property from the Collection of Elisha Hanson to Benefit the National Gallery of Art. The catalog is full of beautiful antique items, of the sort you would expect to discover in an old American estate or mansion. Tons of furniture, decorative items, lots of rare silver, and much more. Naïve art, grandfather clocks, folk art, paintings, and much more. Items range from 1700s and 1800s– lots of colonial and early American items. The sale consisted of 608 separate lots, all of which have extensive descriptions, all with full colour photos, and some of them even being full-page photos. Each item has a description, giving details of the ... moreartist or workshop, the work itself, dates, material, and so on. Also details of provenance, and provides an estimated price. This is great for the collector, so you can compare the value of these works with others. Also a great reference, as these artworks were assembled here once, only to be dispersed to different private buyers, most not to be seen in public again for a generation. The colour illustrations are stunning, and it’s like having a gallery or museum on your shelf! A great addition for anyone interested in American history, U.S. art, colonial historical material, and so on. The book is large format, measuring about 8 x 11 inches. It has a glossy cover, and is 484 pages long. The book is used, but in good condition. With only minor shelf wear, the book is in good condition. The glossy pages make this extremely heavy(well over 3 pounds) so the top bidder should add $13.90 postage in Canada, 18.90 postage to the USA. I have other, similar catalogs up now, so check that out too, and save on postage. Please e-mail me if you have any questions, and thanks for bidding!

SAMUEL McINTIRE of SALEM- FEDERAL FURNITURE & INTERIOR CARVING -Wonderful Book
Samuel McIntire: Carving an American Style” By Dean T. Lahikainen. Published by the Peabody Essex Museum in 2007. But now out of print. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: For more than a century. Historians have been searching for the true Samuel McIntire(1757–1811) and have been trying to define his role in shaping the cultural heritage of Salem, Massachusetts. Trained as a carpenter by his father, McIntire taught himself the art of architectural drawing and went on to design scores of public and private buildings in Salem, long celebrated for their elegance and beauty. After 1790, however, he made his living primarily as a wood carver, providing ornamental decoration for many of the buildings he designed as well as for furniture and more than two dozen sailing vessels. McIntire was also called upon to carve portrait busts ... moreand even a model of a historic pear, commissions that brought him into the realm of academic sculpture. Samuel McIntire: Carving an American Style is the first book to examine the full range of his carving career and to put it into a broader perspective in terms of the work of his contemporaries and other decorative traditions of the Federal period. The book draws on the remarkable collections of the Peabody Essex Museum. In Salem, Massachusetts, which owns most of McIntire’s architectural drawings and several of his most important buildings, as well as furniture in public and private collections from around the country. Lahikainen presents a critical analysis of McIntire’s carving style and questions some long-held attributions that shed new light on his role as a furniture maker and designer. The book accompanied a major exhibition of McIntire’s work, curated by Lahikainen. This is not an exhibition catalogue; rather, it is an in-depth examination of the works by this master carver that will be required reading for anyone interested in Federal-era design, decorative art, and architecture” DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.5”x12” 305 pages, 315 color and 131 black&

In an attempt to prevent disputes between cabinetmakers and customers and to standardize the trade. The Union Book' describes in great detail what each piece of furniture consists of as a"standard model" what extras could be added, and what to charge for them. The level of detail included for individual pieces is impressive. On a Pembroke table, for example, there are extra charges for extra inch ... morein length, extra inch in width, extra drawer(scratch beaded) cock-beading the drawers, corner line ditto, lining boxes, canting corners(top) ovalo corners, and so on for three more pages. Almost every type of furniture you can think of is here, often in many variations. Let's take a look at the B's- bedstead(table) bedstead(bureau) bedstead(press) bedstead(library press, with breaks) bureau, bookcase, bookcase(library, straight front) bookcase(library, with breaks) basin-stand, basin-stand(corner) basin-stand(square, inclosed) bidet, bidet(box-top) bidet(portable) bottle-tray, bottle-tray(square) bottle-tray(hexagon) butler's tray, book shelves(hanging) book shelves(open) bed-steps, bed table. And so on and on, through card tables, cellarets, dining tables, desks, fire-screens, knife cases, night tables, Pembroke tables, etc. And then there's that second portion, completely devoted to extensible dining tables. A frighteningly complete and comprehensive look at the construction of furniture in the middle of the Victorian period. Furniture and other artifacts made by the Roycrofters at their community in East Aurora, New York, are easily identified by the incised orb and cross and/or“Roycroft” name. The 1906 catalog reprinted here depicts a substantial portion of the furniture designs produced under the forceful direction of Elbert Hubbard. Children's Furniture Design History Thonet, Prouvé, Aalto, Eames, Bertoia,Colani
Fidgety Philip! A Design History of Children's Furniture Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at the Imperial Furniture Collection in Vienna 2006. 184 pages with numerous drawings and illustrations. That exhibition was devoted to the development of furniture designed specifically for children. The exhibition will focus in particular on developments in Austria and Germany from the 19 th century to the 1970s. The beginnings of children's furniture as design objects can be pinpointed exactly: in the 1860s the Viennese bentwood manufacturers Gebrüder Thonet were the first to design special children's furniture for mass production. Numerous new models were added over the following decade. And children's furniture became an important market segment of the bentwood furniture industry. Children's ... morefurniture also became an interesting subject for design in the Viennese Modernist movement after 1900. Architects such as Josef Hoffmann. Robert Oerley or Otto Prutscher designed furniture for children. At the Bauhaus- founded by Walter Gropius in 1919- Marcel Breuer, Erich Dieckmann, Peter Keler and Alma Siedhoff-Buscher developed new forms of furniture for children made of wood and tubular steel. The furnishings and interiors of nursery schools and classrooms after the First World War became an important part of socially motivated design. The ideas of Maria Montessori regarding the furnishing of nursery schools began to be put into practice. With traditional rows of desks being replaced by individual seats and tables that could be rearranged as required. Ferdinand Kramer, Franz Schuster, Franz Singer, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky and Wilhelm Schütte developed children?s furniture for the municipal-run nurseries of Socialist-dominated Vienna and Frankfurt during the 1920s. Furniture for children was an important aspect of international design development both before and after the Second World War. Noted architects and designers such as Alvar Aalto. Jean Prouvé, Char

Portsmouth Furniture. Masterworks from the New Hampshire Seacoast" By Brock Jobe. Published by the University Press of New England/ SPNEA: 1993. DISCUSSION: A massive and important work. Based in part upon an exhibition but, as Jobe notes- The book is more comprehensive than the exhibition, including furniture dating from as early as 1675 and extends beyond a simple cataloguing of the salient characteristics of the objects to tell the story of the development of Portsmouth furniture. Both the ornate and the ordinary are represented, though the former predominate. Three essays provide an overview of the historical and architectural scene and the business of making furniture in Portsmouth. The appendices include a checklist of Portsmouth-area craftsmen, which is the most comprehensive list published to date, as well as the checklist of ... morebranded furniture" Contributors included: Diane Carlberg Ehrenpreis, James L.
