DIE FORM OHNE ORNAMENT Bucher Der Form Volume 1 First Edition. Published by the Deutscher Werkbund in 1924 Hardback without dust jacket 102 pages. Profusely ... moreillustrated with black and white photographic plates A significant moment in the history of the Modern Movement. Die Form ohne Ornament(Form without ornament) was an exhibition held by the Deutscher Werkbund(DWB) in 1924. The accompanying book became the first in their famous series of publications titled Bucher Der Form(Books on Form) The DWB was a colloboration of designers united by the rejection of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil in favour of purer forms reflecting mass production. Luminaries Bruno Paul. Peter Behrens, Richard Riemerschmidt, Josef Maria Olbrich and Wiener Werkstätte founder Josef Hoffmann were all among its founder members. The book. Which is full of black and white photographic plates, was remarkable at the time of publication in its exclusive celebration of artistic endeavour in the decorative arts inspired by industrial production. It features some important works from the Wiener Werkstatte and the early Weimar Bauhaus. Size: Approximately 19cm x 26cm Condition: Good to very good. Aside from a little expected yellowing on the end papers. Internally it is very bright and clean. The board covers are sound save for a light bump to the bottom of the spine, the echoes of which can be seen on some pages. There is some neat underlining in red to the text but no other inscriptions. In all, a lovely copy of the scarce first edition of a seminal text of modernism. Not to be missed. © Text and photographs by room_606. Please do not copy. IMPORTANT There are many more items in my shop that don't appear in regular item searches. Offered for your consideration is a Fabulous Hand Hewn Studio Craft Stool by David N. Ebner. Furniture designer. This stool is a Classic RENWICK STOOL, ... moreso named because it was originally made for an exhibition at the Renwick Gallery. Ebner established his own studio in 1973 and is considered an integral part of the"Studio Craft" furniture movement. His furniture has been shown at numerous Exhibitions throughout the USA. His accomplishments in this field can be read in his Biography, it is worth reading before bidding. This early Renwick Stool may have been commissioned by the previous owner and is signed D.N.E. 77 at the inside bottom of one side, each of the 7's has a slash through it in British style. This is an Estate find of a well know artist that had many fine things in her home. I am not sure of the type of wood, but it looks like Teak or Cherry, it has an Asian and American Moderne style. This Renwick Stool is approx. 15.5" tall and the slightly concave top is approx. 15.5" X 13" The dovetails are hand cut and the craftsmanship is spectacular. This has a very minor chip( about 1/16" X 3/16" to the bottom of one leg plank and a slight flaw at the side of one dovetail. Neither one of these imperfections are glaringly visible. This Renwick Stool is in absolutely beautiful condition for its 37 years of use and display, a true future antique. Because this has been pre-owned and used in a home, it is being offered at a price point far below any other on the open market at this time. Please ask any questions before bidding and I will answer and quickly and thoroughly as possible. The pictures are an important part of this description, and more will be provided individually if needed. PayPal Only. Payment is expected within 3 days of the end of Auction. Or immediate payment on Buy it Now. Please make sure your shipping address is current. Correct and complete.

ARCHITECTURAL GRAPHIC STANDARDS. Ramsey& Sleeper. Wiley& Sons, 1956. 756pp. 5th Edition, Twelfth Printing 1966. This 11 7/8" x 9 1/2" ... morex 1 3/4" volume shows what Eero Saarinen's foreword calls the" dizzy speed and expanding horizons of architectural developments and practice of our time" which certainly included the rapidly changing Mid-Century world. The first edition of this reference work came out in 1932. And like this one is reflective of the styles in that day as well as accepted architectural standards. All editions feature both the science and art of building utilitarian objects, whether it is structure, function, materials, mechanical drawing or any other facet covered in the 23 sections(please enlarge text pics. Saarinen wrote his foreword in 1956 for the first printing and by this 12th one he had been dead 5 years, but he left behind a legacy of architecture and design worldwide. His Tulip Chair is a cult/decor icon from its use on the set of Star Trek, and in the furniture section are featured architectural drawings of tables, benches, chairs, school and office furnishings, etc. made by Knoll, Herman Miller, Finsvin, Paul McCobb, Jens Risom, Haywod Wakefield, Brunswick and others. Everything from the size of 1953-55 cars to the size of light bulbs, Sun maps to calculate shade- an incredible compendium of reference for architect, builder, decorator, landscape architect or homeowner with designs of your own. Book is hardcover and has no marking or unsightly soiling, tight in cover and in shape to be used well into the 21st Century with reasonable care. GOOD used condition. ANTIQUE KENTUCKY CASE-ON-FRAME FURNITURE BY PETER TUTTLE & RELATED PIECES
The Tuttle Muddle: An Investigation of a Kentucky Case-on-Frame Furniture Group” By Marianne P. Ramsey& Diane C. Wachs. Published by the Headley-Whitney Museum in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Around the turn of the nineteenth century. A young cabinetmaker from Virginia named Peter Tuttle migrated to Madison County, Kentucky. For the past 30 years or more, a significant group of furniture, including pieces in this exhibition, have been attributed to him. The discovery of a carved'P* Tuttle' mark in the upper drawer of one chest of drawers has led some people to believe that Tuttle was the maker of this case-on-frame furniture. This detail is significant, but probably not substantial enough to attribute this body of work to him alone. To help determine the possible origins of the pieces, over 60 examples ... morewere surveyed; more are known to exist. The large quantity of surviving pieces, coupled with the fact that there are many variations in construction, suggests that more than one craftsman or shop was at work on this group. It also contains a short guide to some of the cabinetmaking firms and a short but helpful bibliography which includes a list of some period exhibition catalogs. FAKE & ALTERED ANTIQUE FURNITURE - 1931 CLASSIC by Hebert Cescinsky
The Gentle Art of Faking Furniture” By Herbert Cescinsky. Published in London by Chapman& Hall in 1931. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: One of the most influential and best-loved books on fake furniture and its attendant hazards. Fakers, detecting alterations, etc. As collecting"old things" became more popular at the end of the 19th century and start of the 20th, the trade in restored(faked) furniture exploded, with able cabinetmakers and unscrupulous dealers happily pasting genuinely old parts together to create"complete" examples of rare pieces, usually with no notice to the purchaser that any restoration work had been done beyond a brisk dusting and perhaps a new coat of varnish. Into this morass of confusion, collusion and corruption Herbert Cescinsky, longtime dealer and the author of more ... morethan half a dozen respected books on antique English furniture, clocks and interiors, happily waded with this much-needed book. Ames& Ward call it"literate and entertaining" And go on to note that its lessons, though decades old, apply"with equal force today and almost appear to have been written as a cautionary for some modern historians-even though the remarks are directed at the collector of English furniture, students of American objects can profit by many of the general observations. See, in particular, the list of questions stated in Chapter 5, Detective Methods and the Problem of Restoration' DESCRIPTION: Hardcover.
Powered by The free listing tool. FRENCH BOOK : Charles Topino 1742-1803 (antique marquetry furniture)
Charles Topino 1742-1803 167 pages color and b&w photos Hard cover with dust jacket 28 x 22 cm 1.127 kg Francais/French Établi à Paris dès 1745. Powered by The free listing tool. BOOK/GUIDE : ANTIQUE FRENCH FURNITURE (Bretagne,Normandie,Lorraine,Alsace .....)
Guide du Meuble régional 379 pages color and b&w photos Hard cover 25 x 17 cm Francais/French Ce guide rassemble. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES - BAYOU BEND IMA HOGG COLLECTION
American Decorative Arts and Paintings in the Bayou Bend Collection” By David B. Warren. Michael K. Brown, Elizabeth Ann Coleman, Emily Ballew Neff. Published by the Museum of Fine Arts. Houston in 1998. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A stunning. Oversized catalog of this important collection, including furniture, art, textiles, silver, ceramics and glass. The'Bayou Bend Collection' was assembled by Ima Hogg. A collector of American arts during the first"Golden Age" from the 1920s through the 1950s. Bayou Bend is the former home of Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg. The mansion, designed by architect John F. Staub, was built between 1927 and 1928 for Ima Hogg and her brothers, William C. and Michael Hogg. Miss Hogg created a series of gardens that were intended as outdoor rooms for living and entertaining. ... moreIn 1957, Miss Hogg donated her home and her collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Bayou Bend opened to the public in 1966. Staub's plan for Bayou Bend combined eighteenth-century Georgian architecture with elements that are distinctly Southern and of Spanish Creole architecture. The collection at Bayou Bend presently consists of approximately 4,700 objects that reflect historic and stylistic periods from 1620 to 1870 installed in some 28 period room settings that showcase American decorative arts from 1620 through 1870. Miss Hogg began assembling this important collection of American decorative arts in 1920. To provide suitable settings for these extraordinary antiques. Staub designed simple but stately interiors in the style of colonial American rooms. In 1920, while sitting for a portrait by artist Wayman Adams, Miss Hogg admired a simple armchair belonging to the artist that was made in colonial America and later obtained a similar Queen Anne chair for herself. Almost half a century later, Miss Hogg acquired the very same chair that she had first seen in Adams' studio. From the time I acquired my first Queen Anne armchair in 1920, I had an unaccountable

Replacing Joseph Downs' 1952 classic catalog of this collection. In addition to new photographs and descriptions, and some new attributions, there is much additional furniture which was purchased after 1952. The catalog is divided into sections covering-seating furniture-bedsteads-tables-stands and fire screens-dressing tables& high chests-chests of drawers, bureau tables& chests on chests-desks-looking& dressing glasses-case studies, or, furniture that is not what it seems) The Winterthur website notes- Almost 60 years ago. Collector ... moreand horticulturist Henry Francis du Pont(1880–1969) opened his childhood home, Winterthur, to the public. Today, Winterthur is the premier museum of American decorative arts, with an unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects made or used in America between about 1640 and 1860. The collection is displayed in the magnificent 175-room house, much as it was when the du Pont family lived here, as well as in permanent and changing exhibition galleries. Winterthur is set amidst a 1,000-acre preserve of rolling meadows and woodlands. Designed by du Pont, its 60-acre naturalistic garden is among America’s best, with magnificent specimen plantings and massed displays of color. Graduate programs and a preeminent research library make Winterthur an important center for the study of American art and culture. In his later years, du Pont wrote: I sincerely hope that the Museum will be a continuing source of inspiration and education for all time, and that the gardens and grounds will of themselves be a country place museum where visitors may enjoy as I have, not only the flowers, trees and shrubs, but also the sunlit meadows, shady wood paths, and the peace and great calm of a coun
Book: ART NOUVEAU FURNTURE BY EMILE GALLE -ANTIQUE FRENCH FURNITURE
Galle Furniture” By Alastair Duncan& Georges de Bartha. Published by the Antique Collectors' Club in 2012. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Emile Galle was one of the great names of the Art Nouveau movement in France. And founder of the famous Ecole de Nancy. A polymath and committed social activist, he was best known for his glasswork and faience. Furniture became his third discipline after experimenting with the manufacture of wooden bases on which he could mount his glass vases. Following the French tradition of furniture decoration known as marqueterie, his work is characterised by its meticulous decorative veneers, stained with subtle organic dyes; and panels inlaid with stunningly intricate country scenes and flowers. This important book outlines all of Galle's major works of furniture, from the pieces ... moreuniques that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed between 1889 and 1904 at the annual Paris Salons and two World Expositions. The recent emergence of many of his objets de luxe enables the reader to understand many of his pieces for the first time. Written by Decorative Arts specialist Alastair Duncan, Galle Furniture documents the history of Galle's furniture production from his favourite motifs to the ways in which he used furniture design to express his social and political ideals. Duncan includes an encyclopedic range of models created in the Galle Workshops both during and after his lifetime. Beautifully illustrated, and containing translations of Galle's'Notes to the Juries' of the World Expositions, this stunning publication will leave the reader captivated by this remarkable expression of the new art that changed the European aesthetic forever. 2 VOLUME SET ON ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE - EDGAR G. MILLER CLASSIC
An American Furniture Classic- American Antique Furniture. A Book for Amateurs” By Edgar G. Miller. Jr. Published in New York by New York Dover Publications in 1966. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A re-issue of the first trade edition of this classic text. Published in 1937. Perhaps classic collection of pictures is a better description, as what Miller set out to do was create an encyclopedic survey of American furniture forms and styles down to“about 1840” In this he succeeded, drawing heavily on many private collections in the Baltimore area as well as other archives. Semowich notes that“it is still considered a standard reference book” whose“usefulness lies in its photographs” and Homer Eaton Keyes, editor of the Magazine Antiques, praised the book in its Foreword as a good tool to acquiring“the fundamental knowledge ... moreessential to a correct stylistic analysis of any reasonably pure example of old-time American furniture” Keyes went on to tackle one problem with all the pictorial surveys of the era in one of his better flights of literary fancy. Noting that“Not without some guile, I believe, Mr. Miller parades a thoroughly democratic furniture group in which high aristocrats of cabinetmaking consort amicably with honest bourgeois types, and even an occasional upstart of uncertain lineage and doubtful integrity is tolerated if his outward demeanor conforms to a certain accepted minimum of propriety” Nutting has been criticized for the same failing, but not in such velvet-trimmed words. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 2 volumes. 8”x10.5” 1,106 pages, 2,115 black& white illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: The covers have some wear and rubbing(please see the photos. Above and below) The books themselves have some minor wear, but otherwise are clean and nice, with tight bindings.
