ANTIQUE 1815 ENGLISH TEA CUP & SAUCER ATTRI.TO COALPORT-HANDPAINTED PORCELAIN
This beautifully detailed cup and deep saucer are one of the most well painted sets I have seen. The saucer measures 5 1/2" 14 cm) in diameter and 1 1/4" 3.2 cm) deep. The cup is 3 1/2" 8.9 cm) in diameter and 2" 5.1 cm) high(or deep) The cobalt leaves and stems on both pieces are under the glaze. Including the blue sprigging on the outside of the cup. All the other colors are hand-painted, including the gold, which is done in a refined manner. The gold is over painted over the cobalt blue, outlines all the flowers, buds and butterflies, and is also used by itself for buds, leaves and stems. The center peony in both the cup and saucer has detailed dark stamens and has black stippling on the buds and butterflies as extra detail. This is an early design, as the elaborate decoration done on the inside of the cup and saucer ... moreand the outside has just simple sprigging, popular during the very early 19th century. The handle and cup has the classic Coalport shape, but then so many factories traded artists, molds, etc. and Swansea, Nantgarw, and Spode all also used the same handle shape. During the period 1800 to 1820 the same artist would paint for several different factories at the same time. Coalport bought Caughley in 1799 and bought Swansea and Nantgarn molds around 1820. Some pieces were sent to London to be painted by Thomas Baxter, as well. The handle is slightly darker than the rest of the cup and can be attributed, being 197 years old, to age. I have two similar cup and saucer sets and both were attributed to Coalport. The condition of the set and the quality of the workmanship is exquisite, regardless of who painted it! The deep saucer is indicative of the period, also. I have seen sets like this listed for $250 and more. A rare. English porcelain, Bute shape cup and saucer, dating to c.1800-15. Decorated with a very unusual, black, bat" printed design of Cossack horsemen. Unmarked but possibly Rathbone. I have never seen this design on English porcelain and can find no record of it, although I know I have seen the print on the cup, in books about the Napoleonic Wars. Antique English armorial porcelain cup from the first half of the 19th century. Hand painted(NOT a print or transfer)with a central Coat of Arms flanked by a pair of rampant lions and mounted with an armorial helmet and breastplate with pennants at the top. The colors all look fresh and vibrant, which was difficult to capture with the camera. The photos do not due this piece justice. This is an oversized cup. Measuring about 3 1/8 inches high and about 4 3/8 inches across the mouth, not counting the handle. The painting is beautifully detailed and extremely well executed. The gilding is in very nice condition with no obvious wear although it does have typical hairline scratches as you can see in the photos(the gold in the photos looks a little washed out but that’s just in the photos-it’s not washed out in real life) No chips. No cracks. ... moreNo flaking or wear to the enamel. A few tiny frits from the firing process which is typical of the time period. Nothing that detracts from the piece. I haven’t had the time to research the Coat of Arms. So I don’t know if it’s from an important service or from a notable family. P lease excuse the reflections in the pictures. SIZE: The saucers are approximately 5.5 inches diameter. The cups are approximately 2.25 inches tall. CONDITION: 2 of the cups have some age yellowing. And 1 of those has 2 very tight faint hairlines. One of the saucers has a nearly impossible to see tight hairline that is visible on the back. The decoration has rubbed off one of the saucers. Possibly very early 19th century English porcelain, but I don't know the maker for certain. It's a nice ribbed design with intricate pattern and gold highlights. The condition is great, with no damage, other than an extremely minor 1/4" glaze line on the exterior edge of the handled cup that does not go through to the interior. No repair and only very slight wear to the gold. An exceptional set. Measures 5&1/2" across, 2&1/8" and 2&3/4" deep. Insurance is now included in the cost of Shipping.
