The History of the Tea Cup& Saucer An early custom of drinking tea was to drink it from a"tea bowl" Designed with curved sides the tea bowl, looking much like the saucers we know today, were used due to the larger surface area, which allowed the fluids to cool down more rapidly. The"East Indian Trading Company" in the 1700's was the first to import the tea bowls from China. The tea bowls were also designed to hold less fluid than the metal cylinders that were used for coffee. Due to the high cost of tea at the time. Very nice tea cup set- used to be my grandmother's set. There are three small chips/irregularities on the back of the saucer. In the single picture of the saucer you can see two of them at 3 o'clock and 10 o'clock. There is another at 2 o'clock position. The close-ups I tried to take to show those chips. There is no crazing on the set at all. Saucer measures 5 1/2 inches across; cup's rim measures 3 1/4 inches across. Will send out within 3 business days after payment has been cleared and accepted. Condition: There is a pin size nick on the edge of the saucer which is so small( it is smaller almost than a pin head) I did not see first and only saw it when I ran my finger along the sides of the saucer. Aside from that there are no other nicks. Crazing, cracks or discoloration.
