It was also made without a glass bezel. This is an old clock.not sure how old, but very old. The face and all parts of clock are intact, NO chips, etc. It is signed on the bottom in pencil(some past owner from the 19c) with a name. It is written in the old script style of writing of that era. Maybe you are better at translating than I. It has French original works and is a great time keeper. No problems at all. My husband's friend is a clock restorer and it has been cleaned and maintained. No married ... morepieces or such. Both the works and the penduleum have same numbers, so if you are a clock expert, you can look it up with probably some resource book that is out of edition. The clock measures 12" high. 9 1/2" wide and 4 1/4" deep. The gilt seems to be all original as well and the lady is probably one of the French royalty. The French were famous for that. The white stone is onyx which I understand is a type of marble. Whatever.it is very lovely with no chips. It sits on 4 little bun feet done in stone as well. This truly opulent mantle clock expresses the sentiments of the French Louis XVI period with utmost purity. It is surmounted by a remarkably well cast spread-winged eagle, it's claws grasping sprawling flames raised on a black plinth draped with flowing gilt bronze foliage; every minute aspect of the bird, even the pimpled skin along the toes and the lines of each feather, is detailed with utmost realism. The clock is divided down the center in near perfect symmetry, one side to the other; a bouquet of flowers are presented in a pair of urns, one black ... moremarble and the larger in alabaster, each resting on the stepped marble shelf flanking the dial. A finely painted and enameled presentation. The dial mixes Roman and Arabic numerals, a practice the firm of Jean-Antoine Lépine reportedly used until 1789 when it reverted back to utilizing purely Roman numerals. The gilded hour and minute hands are made more prominent by the ebonized seconds hand. These situated above the scrolling signature. The white porcelain dial has minor chips around the keyholes, minor fractures by one hole. Thick beveled glass fine in front door. The brass back door does not shut completely. Here's a Fine Antique Fire Gilt Bronze French Cartel Clock with Cherubs for Parts or Restoration. The clock dates to the late 1800s and was retailed by Black. Starr and Frost in New York. There are old repairs to the case; the two stems that extend from the bow at the top to the body have been re-attached(picture 5, front, and picture 6, back) Also there are two spots on the bow that have been repaired(picture 8) The works are signed F. Pelissier, France and it is over wound so I don't know what it would take to get it running again, if that is even possible. You can see the quality of this fine clock, but if you pick it up you can feel it as well as it weighs about 17 pounds. The length of the case is approximately 23 and 3/4" S.H.I. Beautifully modelled and finished in glorious ormolu(finely gilded bronze or doré bronze) It is of balloon form with bold scrolls and acanthus swags. To the top a large rococo flourish. The front and sides have sound frets backed with red velvet. We have carefully and completely cleaned and restored the clock to a very high standard. The large and stunning dial is enamel on copper and is complete with it's original finely fretted gilt brass hands and convex bezel. The bezel is marked for the retailer Charles Hour. The French movement is of high quality and has the makers mark on the movement backplate of Louis Japy. It is coming from a very wealthy Short Hills, NJ estate where they family had been in the jewelry business in the early 1900s. Made of a spelter type metal with gold coloring. Condition: The legs are a bit splayed. But could be bent back into position. Clock does run sometimes, but I have not tried to wind it to see if it keeps time. Would probably need to be serviced. This antique Louis the XV Mantle Clock is inlaid on all side. All the hand cut brass and inlay are original with ... moreno missing pieces. Some of the brass has lifted from the inlay, but every piece goes smoothly back together. Even the inside of the back door and the slanted floor on the inside is inlaid. In the close-up photograph of the base you will see an arrow pointing to a break in the ormolu and there are there close-up photos of the top finial. You can see it from the front, but the back has been reinforced with an apoxy. The rest of the bronze ormolu is original with very little wear to the gilding. On either side of the case and the door are glass panels that are not beveled and most likely old replacement. There also in an old restorations to the porcelain number V and around the key holes, plus a short hairline at the center of the dial. All these problems do not take away from this 19thC French Louis XV Brass Inlaid Mantle Clock. We have listed this 19 th century clock without any reserve.
