Bold and stunning original ... moreantique French brass Rococo cartel clock, classic Rococo asymmetrical shape with bold and flamboyant scrolls and foliage. It is beautifully modelled in gilt brass, scrolling, entwined foliage forms the case with'C' scrolls to the shoulders with floral swags. Below the dial the case is fretted to allow the pendulum to be seen swinging behind. The modelling is crisp and well detailed with a bright and clean finish. The superb dial is enamel on copper with blue lettering to both the hour ring and the separate minute ring. It is complete with finely fretted gilt brass hands and convex glass. The French movement is by Japy Freres and has the makers mark on the movement backplate. It is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. BEAUTIFUL HANDPAINTED JAPY FRERES ANTIQUE FRENCH CARTEL CLOCK(ca. 1890) BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED JAPY FRERES FRENCH CARTEL CLOCK(ca. 1890) You are bidding on a very nice hand painted French cartel clock made around 1890. I picked this clock up at a garage sale about a year ago and forgot that I had it. The clock is time only and measures(not counting the chain) 12" tall. 8 1/2" wide, and about 3" deep. The metal case is beautifully handpainted(probably oil paint) and has gilted bronze decorations on top and bottom. There is also a bronze chain that you can hang the clock by or it can be hung by a bracket on the back. The bracket works better as the chain makes the clock hang a little off center. When I bought the clock, I was told that it didn't work and that it had been sitting in the basement for over 50 years. ... moreThe minute hand and the hand nut were missing. I replaced the minute hand with a close copy and the hand nut came from a watch. It is a little loose but it works. The movement has been ultrasonically cleaned, hand polished, and lubricated. One bushing was installed. The movement has the insignia of Japy Freres stamped above the spring barrel. The insignia is also located on the front of the clock just below the hand stem. This clock is finicky as it will stop every once in awhile. I can usually get it to run for about 8 days but when it hangs on the wall, it has to be perfectly in beat. The pendulum is different as you have to rotate the pendulum bob one way or the other to adjust the speed. Overall, a very beautiful clock. Good luck and happy bidding.
