We don't have a key. So we are not sure if it is in working condition. Comes from the estate of a clock collector and repairman out of Munster, Indiana. Excellent Condition. Though porcelain face has a couple of tiny hairline cracks and a small shallow chip out of the porcelain right near the keyhole by the number"8" No other breaks or repairs that we can see. Please look closely at photos for the gorgeous details. Could use a cleaning, as it is quite dusty. We cannot find a name or manufacturer anywhere. Clock is heavy, weighing in at 10.8 lbs. The Clock is superbly decoration with serves French porcelain scenic panels all around and to the sides. The Clock is also richly gold gilt throughout. And is solid bronze. The Clock also has a wonderful and unique figural top with two cherub boys playing with a turtle. The Clock has its original quality movement which is signed by the fine period French maker Japy Freres. When I picked up the clock at the estate is was in good working order. And rings on the half and full hours. To be safe for the auction I will assume the clock may need a servicing or light cleaning to keep perfect time, which I am sure has not been done in some time. The Clock itself is in very fine condition showing very light wear to the panels, and no chips, cracks, missing pieces, or repairs. The Clock displays beautifully measuring 12 ½ inches wide, by 5 ½ inches deep, and sits 14 ½ inches tall. You rarely see examples of this truly superb period quality come up for auction. Antique Japy Freres Clock French Bronze Gilt Figural & White Marble Onyx Mantle
For auction is this beautiful Antique Japy Freres French Mantle Clock. The base is White Marble Onyx. This clock depicts a classical figure. A gentleman in period dress with a mandolin. The clock itself is set in a gilt case with a white porcelain dial. The base has lovely decorations with swag chains and patterns. It is very heavy. The movement is stamped"Japy Freres& Cie Grd Med. D'Honneur" means it(the movement) was made some time after the company(Japy Freres/Japy Brothers) won the Grand Medal of Honor(which they did at the Paris exhibition in 1855) they also won a medal in 1867. It shows they were awarded a medal at the 1855 Paris Exposition. It means that Japy Freres won an award in 1855 allowing them to display the award on their movements until the time a nother award might be won at a future exposition. Such as ... morethe 1867 Paris Exposition. I cannot see any date on the stamp. The movement also has the number 5488 stamped on it. I got this at an Estate Auction. It did not come with the key but has the bell and pendulum. I started the pendulum and the clock ran for about 30 minutes. It's in good condition as you can see and all the the works appear to be there. This is a beautiful mid-19th century gilt bronze figural mantle clock. It depicts a woman reading a book. With musical instruments behind her. The ornate base measures 17 W x 5 D x 4 H(inches) Overall height is 12 inches. Dial measures 3-1/8 inche s across. It is in overall good condition. With a nice patina. The gilt is nearly intact, with just a couple of spots of wear. It needs a good cleaning. The mark on the movement is from the medal earned in 1867. Grande Med d'Honneur, Expo Universelle Paris. The next medal was in 1873, so it is assumed this movement was manufactured between 1867 and 1873. Japy Freres was considered the leading French clockmaker in the 19th century. Note that the hands and pendulum are missing. The book in her hands is loose. The movement needs cleaning. I wound it very slightly to test and the pendulum mechanism ... moremove s back and forth. I do not know if it keeps time. The chime mechanism is intact. The key is included. This is part of a family estate. It was purchased during one of many trips to Europe in the late'50s to early'60s. I have not been able to find anything like this to compare. It's an inheritance so don't know where it was obtained. I have had Timekeepers of Escondido. CA clean and balance the movement which now works perfectly. They tell me it's French because of the round movement. The clock has no identification marks so far revealed. Timekeepers suggests the vintage to be 1860ish. The figure, without wings, appears to be popular during the Louis XV period. The figures with wings I have not seen on any other clock during my extensive research. The material appears to be bronze. Because of the delicate design, I do not want to ship the clock. If there is a sale, the clock can be picked up at Timekeepers, Escondido[San Diego County] or the buyer can arrange for Timekeepers to ship.
