We are humbled to present this awesome solid birdseye& tiger maple Cannonball bed from the lovely Vermont summer home of a noted educator. This is the very height of New England Colonial furniture making. This boldly grained bed is made from the finest in maple on par with fine instrument grade wood except this in this massive abundance. In some of its lower panels it displays the ultra rare phenomenon of solid birdseye maple transitioning in grain to solid tiger maple varying in curly maple. There are only a handful of pieces of ... morethis quality out there and we have been fortunate to handle the few estates committed to furnishing on par with this period maple.We have sold a lot of fine period solid birdseye and tiger maple furniture in our collective careers and we are qualified to say this bed is something very pure and special. We are most pleased to be able to say that the crime of cutting into this bed to convert it to standard bedding was never committed. We do understand the needs of furniture but you do that to something other than this 200 year old gem. This bed is in its untouched finish and you are seeing it in varying sunlight. The grain of this maple just explodes out to capture your eyes in the warmth of this mellow golden amber finish. This is a true 3/4 bed and requires either installation of a jute rope foundation or dead level rabbit edge foundation with a custom made mattress that will not ride too high over the head and footboards. We note one of the rails running between the headboard has an ancient repair with a charming old period bolt. We actually think they hit a knot milling it. An authentic Early American maple wood Hired Mans or daybed made in the first quarter of the 19th century. This has finely turned tiger maple posts and rails with highly figured curly grain. The original rope seat support was upgraded to a very comfortable drop-in cushion built on a wood frame filled with springs. The cushion is covered in a soft mohair velvet and shows a little wear. The only upholstery work required on this is perhaps replacing the mohair to the fabric of your choice. This measures 72 inches wide. 26 inches deep and the back is 28 inches high. The top of the cushion measures 19 inches from the floor. It is solid. Sturdy, and designed to support a lot of weight. It is an original period piece. And not made from another piece of furniture. Very tall and delicate four poster designer for Gear NY. A fashionable store from the 1980s in NY that specialized in imported Italian stoneware. You almost have to climb up on this bed, its proportions are unusual and perfect for its sleek design. Rope holders on the sideboards were not used, not sure if they can be, bed mounts on only three boards that attach to the brackets shown in the photos. Easy to put together with big lag screws, poles may have to come off to get down my elevator, I had them cut and dowled to get them in my place. Have the boards that encircle the bed on top easy to put on by removing balls on top of bed and replacing to lock them into place. Color of the maple is exquisite, on the bright side, and beautiful maple medallions inlaid on outside of foot board and inside of headboard.
