Myths and Legends Series: North American Indians by Lewis Spence. With Illustrations from Drawings and Famous Paintings. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust ... moreJacket: 392 pages. Publisher: Studio Editions; 1993) In countless tepees. Across the wide expanse of the North American continent, the Indian storytellers filled the hours of darkness with tales of myth and magic that held their audiences spellbound. Before the arrival of the Europeans, more than three hundred tribal groups lived in the forests, mountains, and plains of North America. For these Indians, the stories were more than mere entertainment, they were an essential part of a culture based upon a common understanding of mankind’s place in nature. As such the mythology was inseparable from the ceremonies and beliefs of the tribes. In many. Such as the Navajo, the mythology was inextricably bound with tribal ceremony and beliefs. Dancers who donned masks to represent gods thereby assumed the spiritual strengths associated with them. The stories that were told varied according to tribe, but they were united by many common themes. Trusting yet superstitious, the American Indian lived close to nature, at one with his surroundings. The mountains. Forests, and plains are the settings for these charming stories, which center on hunting, trapping, and other pastoral pursuits. In all of them, the elements play an important part, just as they did in the lives of the Indians themselves. The open air, the wind, the sun, the trees, the stones and the hills were all believed to be living things; even the night and the day. Presiding over all was the Great Spirit, the supreme Indian deity. Many stories tell of a time when the earth was different than it is today. Before the coming of the tribes, when animals were considered to be human too. Totemism, the belief that animals had inhabited the land before man and were this better equipped by nature and cunning to survive than primitive mankind, is the prevalent characteristic of the Indian mythologies. The Indians had com

America and Europe, 1780-1900. By Howard Pain, Van Nostrand Reinhold Ltd. NY, 1978. THE HERITAGE OF UPPER CANADIAN FURNITURE is a book of firsts. It is meant for both the serious collector and those who are only beginning to become interested. Never before has Canadian furniture been illustrated so lavishly or completely; the 1.450 plates(249 in color) portray the best examples of Upper Canadian furniture so that they can be identified and evaluated. And never before has the furniture been written about with such clarity and authority. Howard Pain[the author] has given us the only complete reference work on this fascinating and unique body of furniture. This text“is the first book to deal in a comprehensive way with both formal and vernacular styles in Upper Canada. And the first to show their interdependence. More importantly, it is the only work to trace and explain the furniture’s diverse cultural origins. The impression has often been given that Upper Canadian furniture originated almost entirely in the traditions of British and American immigrants. This book clearly shows that it is the result of complex interrelationships not only among Britons and Americans, but also among European and French Canadian immigrants. The European traditions, especially, contain unique and beautiful furnishings, which were made in Upper Canada with admirable skill using old country methods. After a brief historical discussion of immigration patterns into upper Canada. The author explores and illustrates the broad range of stylistic influences on Upper Canadian furniture, and then proceeds to explain and portray for the first time the four major furniture traditions: Anglo-American, Germanic, Polish and French Canadian. The last chapter deals with imported furniture, pieces brought by Loyalist and later immigrants, sent from the old country o

Bibliography of Books & Articles about Antique American Furniture
American Furniture Craftsmen Working Prior to 1920. An Annotated Bibliography” By Charles J. Semowich. Published by the Greenwood Press in 1984. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An essential reference because it is more or less complete(up to 1984) Although the annotations are brief. Periodical literature is included. The entries are divided into groupings of works about individual craftsmen, works about regional groups of craftsmen, general books, and trade catalogs. Everything is cross-indexed by craftsmen, author-title, and subject. The materials included in this bibliography focus on the craftsmen responsible for the creation of fine furniture. Works that give biographical information about furniture craftsmen and discuss the stylistic and aesthetic development of their art; works that examine the sociological, political, ... moreeconomic and environmental conditions within which furniture craftsmen worked, as well as furniture factories and furniture retail businesses themselves; and general works useful in the study of American furniture are cited. The bibliography consists of four main sections, the first of which deals with the life and work of individual furniture makers and designers. The second section focuses on groups of furniture craftsmen. Works of a general nature that contribute to the study of American furniture are found in section three. The fourth section contains furniture trade catalogs published by manufacturers and wholesalers for salesmen and retail stores. A two-part appendix lists furniture trade periodicals published mainly during the years 1880-1930, and manuscript repositories containing materials relevant to furniture. Three indexes- craftsman, author-title, and subject complete the volume. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 6.5"x9.5" 381 pages. CONDITION NOTES: In fine. Clean condition. 1954 STICKLEY CHERRY VALLEY FURNITURE A Living American Tradition illust CATALOG
Up for auction is this neat little book titled Stickley Cherry Valley Furniture. A Living American Tradition. The catalog of Stickley furniture was published by L. J. G. Stickley, Inc. Fayetteville, N.Y. in 1954. The following history of the Stickley Company comes from the company’s web site: Our story began with three words: Als Ik Kan—to the best of my ability. This old Flemish craftsman's phrase has been the guiding principle of Stickley. Gustav Stickley marked his product with the phrase to assure customers that Stickley furniture was of the finest quality. Every piece made with honor, integrity, and pride. The Stickley brothers burst into international prominence in the early 20th century with their Mission Oak designs. These were based on the notion that furniture should be"honest"a reaction against the fake joinery. Unnecessary ... moregaudiness, and shoddy workmanship of many of the pieces created in the early days of industrial furniture making. The Stickleys used solid construction. What-you-see-is-what-you-get joinery, and the highest quality woods. But even more, they showed a genius for design, creating hundreds of new forms that were at once beautiful to look upon, practical to use, exceedingly strong and long-lasting, and perfect for the new ways American families wanted to live. Stickley furniture was not for shutting up in formal parlors—it was to be used and loved by young and old. Great emphasis was placed on letting the gorgeous. Organic forms of quartersawn oak and other woods speak for themselves. Finishes were not thick gums, but clear dyes that allowed natural grain to sparkle. The same devotion to design. The best workmanship, and enduring value was applied to all Stickley designs. Leopold Stickley's colonial-inspired Cherry Valley Collection, introduced in the 1920s, honored the traditions of early American craftsmen, earning Leopold the title"Revered Dean of Cabinetmakers" in the process. Eventually the Stickley brothers passed away. And respect for hand craft ebbed

Furniture of the Pilgrim Century(of American Origin) 1620-1720. With maple and pine to 1800, including colonial utensils and wrought-iron house hardware into the 19th century” By Wallace Nutting. Published in Framingham by the Old America Company in 1924. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A much revised and enlarged edition of this classic. The first book published on the subject of American 17th century furniture. Like all Nutting books, caution is required in figuring out where the good examples end and the restored or re-manufactured examples begin. First published in 1921, this book was beset by controversy almost from the start, as within a year a broadside was circulated by an ironworker stating that he had made many of the examples of ironwork illustrated by Nutting. Antique American Furniture, Folk Art &c - Henry P. Deyerle Collection Catalog
An Interesting Auction Catalog- Important Americana. The Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Henry P. Deyerle” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's on May 26-27th. 1995. Sale 6716. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An immense collection featuring fine American country and folk items- furniture. Ceramics, figurines, paintings, etc. as well as some very nice pieces of early American formal furniture as well. What is really outstanding about this collection is the fine eye of the collector-the pieces are not just rare, but fine and interesting. Dr. Deyerle[1917-1994] described by Wendell Garrett in the introduction to this catalog as a"cultivated Virginia gentleman" was the descendant of 1730s Alsatian settlers in the Shenandoah Valley. In the 1950s he began to collect Pennsylvania-German pottery and ... morefrakturs, and soon branched out to furniture and other antiques from the New England and Atlantic states, but Virginia and the Pennsylvania-German areas were always his focus. Garrett notes- it is the quantity and quality of those antiques from the Great Valley of Virginia that make the Deyerle Collection the largest and finest of its kind" DESCRIPTION and CONDITION NOTES: Softcover. 8"x10.5" About 400 pages, 802 lots, profusely illustrated in color and black& white.
