Myths and Legends Series: North American Indians by Lewis Spence. With Illustrations from Drawings and Famous Paintings. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust ... moreJacket: 392 pages. Publisher: Studio Editions; 1993) In countless tepees. Across the wide expanse of the North American continent, the Indian storytellers filled the hours of darkness with tales of myth and magic that held their audiences spellbound. Before the arrival of the Europeans, more than three hundred tribal groups lived in the forests, mountains, and plains of North America. For these Indians, the stories were more than mere entertainment, they were an essential part of a culture based upon a common understanding of mankind’s place in nature. As such the mythology was inseparable from the ceremonies and beliefs of the tribes. In many. Such as the Navajo, the mythology was inextricably bound with tribal ceremony and beliefs. Dancers who donned masks to represent gods thereby assumed the spiritual strengths associated with them. The stories that were told varied according to tribe, but they were united by many common themes. Trusting yet superstitious, the American Indian lived close to nature, at one with his surroundings. The mountains. Forests, and plains are the settings for these charming stories, which center on hunting, trapping, and other pastoral pursuits. In all of them, the elements play an important part, just as they did in the lives of the Indians themselves. The open air, the wind, the sun, the trees, the stones and the hills were all believed to be living things; even the night and the day. Presiding over all was the Great Spirit, the supreme Indian deity. Many stories tell of a time when the earth was different than it is today. Before the coming of the tribes, when animals were considered to be human too. Totemism, the belief that animals had inhabited the land before man and were this better equipped by nature and cunning to survive than primitive mankind, is the prevalent characteristic of the Indian mythologies. The Indians had com

America and Europe, 1780-1900. By Howard Pain, Van Nostrand Reinhold Ltd. NY, 1978. THE HERITAGE OF UPPER CANADIAN FURNITURE is a book of firsts. It is meant for both the serious collector and those who are only beginning to become interested. Never before has Canadian furniture been illustrated so lavishly or completely; the 1.450 plates(249 in color) portray the best examples of Upper Canadian furniture so that they can be identified and evaluated. And never before has the furniture been written about with such clarity and authority. Howard Pain[the author] has given us the only complete reference work on this fascinating and unique body of furniture. This text“is the first book to deal in a comprehensive way with both formal and vernacular styles in Upper Canada. And the first to show their interdependence. More importantly, it is the only work to trace and explain the furniture’s diverse cultural origins. The impression has often been given that Upper Canadian furniture originated almost entirely in the traditions of British and American immigrants. This book clearly shows that it is the result of complex interrelationships not only among Britons and Americans, but also among European and French Canadian immigrants. The European traditions, especially, contain unique and beautiful furnishings, which were made in Upper Canada with admirable skill using old country methods. After a brief historical discussion of immigration patterns into upper Canada. The author explores and illustrates the broad range of stylistic influences on Upper Canadian furniture, and then proceeds to explain and portray for the first time the four major furniture traditions: Anglo-American, Germanic, Polish and French Canadian. The last chapter deals with imported furniture, pieces brought by Loyalist and later immigrants, sent from the old country o

An Interesting Catalog- American Furniture in Pendleton House” By Christopher P. Monkhouse& Thomas S. Michie. Published in Providence by the Museum of Art. Rhode Island School of Design, in 1986. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Charles Pendleton was one of a group of pioneering collectors of Americana which included Marsden Perry. George Palmer, Thomas B. Clarke, and of course, Luke Vincent Lockwood. He was depicted in Eben Howard Gay's"A Chippendale Romance" in the person of Mr. Remington, a premiere collector of American Chippendale furniture, a"man of middle age and serious aspect, with) the ferret-like nose of the antiquarian, and a sonorous voice whose tones deepened into thrilling vibrations when discoursing upon his pet hobby. His pet hobby soon became a business, and he became one of the ... morefirst of the major Americana collector/dealers. His premier collection was one of the first to be presented to an institution, and a specially designed house was built to hold it. A leader of the"scrape and refinish" school, his star became somewhat eclipsed in the decades after his death, but this cannot obscure the beauty and importance of the magnificent collection he built. A full account of his life and collecting is presented in this catalog, which presents the American furniture from the collection, and includes pieces bought since Pendleton's death. 1930 Important Early American Furniture Auction ~ Priced
This was an amazing auction. Most items of importance have provenance. Realized prices are recorded as sold by a member of the auction audience. Please read photo 1& 2 before just looking at the rest of the catalog photos. This a little rough. Cover is missing a chunk on bottom left corner, also a repaired tear 1/2 of the way across the front cover. Slight yellowing of pages but not that serious. Antique Furniture American French English 1600-1900 / Scarce Illustrated Book
THREE CENTURIES OF FURNITURE by H.D. Molesworth and John Kenworthy-Browne. The Viking Press, NY, 1969/1972. From the seventeenth century through the Art Nouveau of the early 20th century. This book presents examples that“vary from simpler designs, as in Colonial America, to the high style of English, French, Italian, Spanish, and other European designs. While the book focuses on individual pieces, many complete rooms are included to show the type of settings for which different kinds of furniture were designed and made. The book makes no attempt to be a complete catalogue of styles or makers, but rather it presents a fascinating array of some of the finest furniture in Europe and America during the past three hundred years. The broad scope of the book offers all antique lovers, decorators, artists, designers, in addition to more general readers, ... morea valuable reference work as well as an inspirational one. An important achievement of this book is the superb color photography and views of the architecture of interiors which are rarely attained so consistently and successfully. Chapter coverage includes: Versaille and the Court style. The Protestant North[of Europe] Rococo, the great cabinetmakers, the late 18th century, the empire, regency and federal styles, the mid-19th century and the artist-craftsman. Book: Palley Collection of Antique American Folk Art & Furniture - 2002 Auction
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The American Folk Art Collection of Sandy and Julie Palley” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's on January 18. 2002. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The catalog of an auction devoted to American folk paintings. Quilts, furniture, metalwork, woodwork, rugs and embroidery from the Sandy and Julie Palley collection. Sotheby's press release noted- The Palley's were passionate and dedicated collectors who immersed themselves in the world of folk art, from small regional shows in the beginning, to eventual trusteeships at the American Folk Art Museum. Over a span of nearly 30 years, they amassed a collection that reflected their determination to live with American Folk Art, and the January sale will feature that collection which was showcased in their beautiful ... morehome in Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania. This collection is particularly wonderful for its energy and vitality, as the Palleys were actively acquiring and enhancing their collection up until their untimely deaths. Each piece was acquired to be lived with and enjoyed by their families and friends, and the collection was very much a work in progress, and part of an ongoing evolving process. The Palley Collection comprises a number of different collecting categories within the field of American Folk Art while retaining a central focus on Pennsylvania German painted furniture" DESCRIPTION and CONDITION NOTES: Softcover. 8"x11" 100 pages, 84 lots, color illustrations. ADOLPH HENRY MEYER COLLECTION - ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE -SOTHEBY'S 1996
An Interesting Auction Catalog- Important Americana. The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Henry Meyer” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's January 20. 1996. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The January 14. 1996 issue of Britain's The Independent reported- The sale next Saturday of the best collection of American furniture to come on the market for 20 years- the Mr and Mrs Adolf Henry Meyer collection- is a big event. The auction at Sotheby's New York is expected to generate fierce competition between aficionados. Adolf Meyer and his wife Ginger began to collect in the 1950s. They had just moved into a house furnished by Ginger's aunt(in Victorian style) when Ginger stopped off in Birmingham, Michigan, at the antique store of one Jes Pavey, an American furniture enthusiast. He saw some ... morefake antique fire irons in the back of the car and pointed them out. What can I do? asked Mrs Meyer, horrified. Pavey sold her a genuinely old set. Two days later, she rang Pavey and said, Would you hurry over? he recalls. She said: Mr Meyer is here and getting ready to go to the office. Come over and drive in the driveway, so he can't get out. Before Pavey left, he'd been commissioned to redo the house in American style. Meyer told me, When you find something you think fits in this house, we'll discuss it and send you a cheque. He wanted the best. According to the Meyers' grandson, Pavey was 99 per cent responsible for the collection. Adolf Meyer was born in Michigan in 1893, the son of a German immigrant carpenter. Leaving school at 15 he joined Detroit's motor industry and founded two hugely successful companies, American Screw Products and Vulcan Forging, which made him his first and many more millions. The realisation that he couldn't have made a fortune from scratch in this way in any other country brought on an acute attack of American nostalgia. In 1960, the fever gripped him to the point of establishing the"Americana Foundation" a cha

Field Guide to American Victorian Furniture 1st Edition Sofa Sideboard Bookcase
I have come into possession of some nice books that I will be auctioning off now and again. This auction is for a 1st edition book titled"Field Guide to American Victorian Furniture" by Thomas H Ormsbee. This is a great smaller pocket type book that covers many facets of the Victorian furniture period in America. It covers the high end pieces that would have been found in the mansions of the time to the more common items found in the farmhouse or the small business man in the village. There are many black and white drawings as examples of the period furniture and then you get the text describing the characteristics of the piece and similar pieces of the time. The book was published in 1952 and does have a lettering system that translates into a price range for the piece. It is interesting to compare the 1952 price to what is being ... morerealized today. Believe or not some pieces have not changed much in price range. This was a former Dunkirk Free Library book but was withdrawn from the shelves in the early 1970s. It has been in a private collection since then. The book is still in pretty good condition with some foxing to the cover. Other than that it is ready for use as a research book again. If you have any other questions let me know. I will do combined shipping and if you are waiting for the conclusion of another auction please let me know. I try to respond to all questions through Ebay messaging as soon as possible. But please realize that a question posed on the last day of the auction may not get an answer. Juggling the day to day schedule of 2 high school kids and everyday life sometimes takes precedent. I can usually catch questions first thing in the morning or late at night and please be aware that I am in the Eastern Time Zone. I would also like to take a moment to ask that you please do not ask me to end or create a buy it now price(if it does not have one) on any of my auctions after they have started. I do not consider that fair to those who may have the auction in their watch list nor in the t

Sack, Boston The catalogs to two auctions held by The Anderson Galleries in New York on December 10-11. 1926(Sale 2112) and November 11-12, 1927(Sale 2192) description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Both of Israel Sack's famous"King Hooper Mansion" sales. Sack filled the historic Marblehead mansion with period furniture and accessories. Left them on display there for a year, and then sold them all at auction; and then he did it again. A 1998 New York Times article noted- The history of Israel Sack Inc. is a rags-to-riches tale. Israel ... moreSack. An immigrant cabinetmaker from Lithuania, opened an antiques store on Charles Street in Boston in 1905. He was attracted to America's early urban furniture, the fancy mahogany and walnut chests, highboys and chairs made in Boston, Newport, R.I. Salem, Mass. New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. He practically invented the field that is known today as Americana. When he started, American furniture was not a collectible form, his son Albert recalled. There were no shows, or any American furniture collections in museums. In the 1920's, Israel Sack moved to New York and started to amass first-rate furniture, and collectors who could afford it. Israel Sack was a brilliant marketer. He sponsored research[and] lectured widely. In the early part of this century, when American society was enamored of English antiques, he persuaded people to pay a premium for pieces made in America. You can tell American furniture by its accent, he liked to say. He argued that American furniture has its own qualities; instead of ornamentation and gilding, it has form, line, proportion, craftsmanship and rarity. He declared it an art form. From the 1920's until his death in 1959, Israel

Philadelphia Empire Furniture & Cabinetmakers - Antique American Cabinetwork
Philadelphia Empire Furniture” By John William Boor. With Allison, Jonathan, Christopher, Peter Boor. Published in Hanover by the University Press of New England in 2006. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: This volume looks closely for the first time at Philadelphia Empire furniture and the development of decorative arts in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1840. The authors explore Neo-Classicism. Contemporary history of Philadelphia, the emergence of Greek-Revival architecture, and the cabinetmakers of Philadelphia Empire furniture. At the beginning of the 19th century Greek-inspired architecture gained popularity in Philadelphia and the city became known for its classically-inspired monumental buildings. Newly designed structures of ancient inspiration were decorated with classical furniture that became the prevailing style ... morein private homes as well as public buildings. The arrival of immigrant craftsmen from Europe in the early 19th century and their subsequent collaboration with American furniture makers produced highly sophisticated Empire designs. Neither French nor English, the designs incorporated purely American elements and became known as American Empire. Nineteenth-century Philadelphia Empire craftsmen were particularly well-known for their extensive motif carving, which often has a fluid, three-dimensional character. Philadelphia Empire Furniture' illustrates in color and describes in detail hundreds of Philadelphia decorative art forms from this period, including wood types, dimensions, and maker(if known) Chapters are dedicated to each of the following forms: card tables. Platform pedestal tables, pier tables, worktables, sofas, chairs, sideboards, secretaries, chests, bedsteads, looking glasses, clocks, and other decorative elements. A separate chapter is devoted to the previously unpublished sketchbook of accomplished craftsman Anthony G. Quervelle. Besides Quervelle, other talented and successful Philadelphia furniture makers included Michel Bouvier, Charles White,

Published in Boston by Houghton Mifflin and Company in1924. Revised 3rd edition. Limited to 515 copies. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first book on this subject. Initially published in 1891. As the Wards point out(Ames& Ward) Lyon introduced many techniques used by later researchers, including the use of estate and inventory records, newspaper advertisements and cabinetmaker's price books, and he also traveled to England to investigate the origins of his beloved 17th century New England furniture. A pioneering study which is still useful. Stillinger concludes- Lyon's conclusions about the homes of the forefathers have held up startlingly well. The Colonial Furniture ... moreof New England' was so carefully researched and thoughtfully crafted that it remains a standard reference today-an extraordinary accomplishment considering the sophisticated research and technological aids available to the modern student of furniture. No other early furniture scholar's work has the same continuing validity. Dr. Lyon once told an acquaintance that in his medical practice his goal was always to get back to first causes. He took a comparable approach to his furniture studies. With excellent results" Semowich 771. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x11" 285 pages, plus 113 black& white plates. CONDITION NOTES: Some minor soil. Maxim Karolik- Collector of Early American Furniture & Art -1963 Memorial
Maxim Karolik. 1893-1963” By Brian O'Doherty. Published in Boston by the Museum of Fine Arts in 1963. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Maxim Karolik(1893-1963) was a Russian opera singer. Immigrant, and art collector and benefactor who cut a swath through the Boston and American collecting scenes. The magnificent bequests of American furniture and paintings he and his wife made to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts earned them a place in the pantheon of Boston’s patrons of the arts. A December 22. 1941 article in Time noted- With the aid of a Russian-born tenor, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts has acquired a million-dollar gift in the form of a collection of its own choosing. The museum, already the possessor of one of the best public collections of early American arts and crafts, has for six years been helping Patron Maxim ... moreKarolik pick up the best American antiques in the 13 original colonies. Not very successful as a tenor, furrow-browed, gesticulating Vocalist Karolik 13 years ago married Martha Codman, a member of one of Boston's best families, whose personal fortune was estimated at five million. Installed in a marble mansion in Newport, Karolik, inspired by the workmanship displayed in his wife's inherited family relics, decided to make early American antiques his hobby. Badly needing advice, he made a deal with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts: they should guide and direct him in making purchases, he would present the completed collection to the museum. Never had any of Boston's own sons so delighted her museum. Armed with Mrs. Karolik's introductions to some of the oldest families, the museum's Decorative Arts Curator Edwin James Hipkiss and Collector Karolik knocked on doors from New Hampshire to Georgia, rooted out many an old desk, clock, silver tankard, portrait. While Curator Hipkiss pointed out good and bad features, Collector Karolik asked questions, absorbed information. To old New England and Philadelphia matrons, startled at the idea of selling American antiq

Silver and related antiques including textiles, portrait miniatures, clocks and prints. The catalog includes an appreciation of Sax by Wendell Garrett, from which we quote several passages- Modest. Unpretentious, and studious, Stan Sax was good company. To the collecting of American antiques he brought an insatiable curiosity, a pursuit of thoroughness and excellence, and an unquenchable thirst for new intellectual adventures. He was the paragon of a collector- a self of unlimited dimensions; a ... morehugely talented, searching, contemplative, daring, visionary, understanding connoisseur-a gentle personality that inspired friendship and a character that justified confidence. He was taken from us at seventy-one, in the prime of his seniority; it hurts to think of what he would have done with more time, but it also helps to remember how fully he used the time he had. He was an expert authority and passionate collector of high-style American furniture and silver who valued things of beauty with which he surrounded himself, whether books, paintings, or other decorative arts. He had that primary personal attribute for the connoisseur of decorative arts which Charles Montgomery termed, a good visual memory stored with an infinite number of images of ordinary, fine, and superior objects mentally pigeonholed for desirability' Stan was a generous benefactor of gifts to the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the United States Department of State and the Detroit institute of Arts, and was active in the affairs of the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Henry Ford Museum, and the Friends of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Katharine Prentis Murphy Collection from the New Hampshire Historical Society” The catalog to an auction held in Bolton by Robert W. Skinner Inc. on September 24th. 1983. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An important auction of small 17th and early 18th century American furniture and accessories such as lighting. Pewter, metalware, and so on, sold by order of the New Hampshire Historical Society, to which they had been donated. Katherine Prentis Murphy was an important mid-generation collector. In"The Antiquers" Elizabeth Stillinger explains- Katherine Prentis Murphy(1884-1967) has been remembered in the world of American antiques not for innovation, but for style. It is impossible not to recognize a Murphy room. The elements are bold alternating black and white diamond checked ... morefloors; curtains, fabrics, and bed hangings in dramatic flame-stitch patterns, and furniture with high arching curves, deep carving, and crisply turned legs and stretchers. Antique American Painted Country Furniture by Female Women Cabinetmakers Artists
Women's Painted Furniture 1790-1830. American Schoolgirl Art” By Betsy Krieg Salm. Published by the University Press of New England in 2010. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Beautifully illustrated. Comprehensive study of women's painted furniture, a long-lost art that sheds light on women's lives in the early republic. In this long-awaited tribute to women's painted furniture, author and artist Betsy Krieg Salm rediscovers a style of early American decorative art still largely unknown to curators, antique dealers, art historians, and the public. She documents the socioeconomic, cultural, and aesthetic history of the form, which includes such items as sewing and work boxes, face screens, and tables. Salm carefully chronicles the process itself, describing a selection of cabinetmakers, woods, varnishes, ... moreand paints, along with the specific tools and techniques used by women artists. Salm analyzes the styles, designs, and patterns of more than two hundred pieces. Treating these objects as documents of women's daily lives, she shows the close relationship between painted furniture motifs and those of needlework and other decorative arts of the period. Thanks to her scholarship, this art form may now receive the recognition it deserves in the broader genre of American women's art. Women's Painted Furniture presents a comprehensive collection of images, most of which are not available elsewhere. Primary sources include recipes, patterns, genealogies of artisans, chemical analyses of antiques, instructions in methods and technique, and the original, mainly English, sources of artistic inspiration for painters and needle workers. 1790-1840 American Federal Rococo & Fancy Furniture & Antiques -Chipstone Study
American Fancy. Exuberance in the Arts 1790-1840” By Sumter Priddy. Published by the Chipstone Foundation& the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Between 1790 and 1840. Millions of middle-class Americans throughout the nation encountered“Fancy” they rode in a Fancy sleigh, dressed up in Fancy clothes, blew their noses in Fancy handkerchiefs, bought goods at Fancy shops, ate at Fancy tables on Fancy dishes, and slept under Fancy coverlets. Not just fancy but Fancy: an early nineteenth-century cultural phenomenon born out of new and enlightened ways of seeing, understanding, and responding to the surrounding world. Fancy expressed itself in just about everything that pleased the senses; generally colorful and boldly patterned, it elicited delight, awe, surprise, whim, and caprice. Whether ... moreexperienced in the form of painted surfaces, kaleidoscopic quilts, or imaginary landscapes, Fancy engaged the emotions and expanded the imagination, expressing the core of human fancy. American Fancy offers an appropriately fantastic experience of this uniquely American sensibility. Author Sumpter Priddy has assembled and produced an original oeuvre in the field of decorative arts, going beyond the traditional modes of furniture analysis, which concentrate on style, history, and construction, to consider the perceptual and emotional responses through which the original users and viewers would have interacted with these material things. To this end he employs the interpretive methods used in the fields of literature, fine arts, philosophy and even psychology. Rich, fully illustrated, wondrously researched, and bound in a cover that imitates a typical Fancy pattern, American Fancy does its marvelous subject true. The magnificent bequests of American furniture and paintings he and his wife made to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts earned them a place in the pantheon of Boston's patrons of the arts, and their rediscovery and championing of the works of Fitz Hugh Lane and Martin Johnson Heade, along with 19th century American fine and folk artists earned them a place in American collecting lore.
