For the first time in modern publication, the styles of furniture available at the height of the 1920's, a pivotal period between Art Nouveau, Art Deco. The Depression year 1932 was the very worst year in the history of the furniture industry and most of the companies that failed did so in the four years between 1928 and 1932. Therefore. Egypt: People. Gods, Pharaohs by Rose-Marie& Rainer Hagen. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 240 pages. Publisher: Taschen; 2003) This is a ... morehuge. Very heavy and high quality art book filled with descriptions of life in ancient Egypt and with absolutely superb full color plates. It is a presentation quality publication. The world’s first strike took place in 1152 B.C. We do not know how many workers laid down their tools, but we do know why they did so. They had not been paid their rations of grain and oil, and so the tomb workers in the Valley of the Kings went on strike. In modern times, the ancient history of Egypt has only been about its rulers and monumental architecture. You will certainly find the Pyramid of Cheops and the Temples of Ramesses and Hatshepsut in this book. But what you will also find is an account of a long-neglected side of Egyptian history: the people’s everyday lives. How did they picture the world? What sort of relationship did men and women have to each other? How did they spend their leisure time? And why did they develop such a perfect technique of preserving the body after death in the form of a mummy; as light as a blown egg and as hard as a statue” The authors investigate stimulating questions and dare to take a fresh look at an ancient past that seems much more real to us from this new perspective. Rose-Marie Hagen was born in Switzerland and studied history as well as the Romance languages and literature. After longer study periods in France and Florence. She began lecturing at different institutions including the American University in Washington, D.C. Rainer Hagen was born in 1928 in Hamburg, and graduated in literature and theatre studies in Munich. He went on to work for radio and TV where his latest position has been as chief editor for Northern Germany’s public broadcasting service. He was attracted to America's early urban furniture, the ... morefancy mahogany and walnut chests, highboys and chairs made in Boston, Newport, R.I. Salem, Mass. New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. He practically invented the field that is known today as Americana. When he started, American furniture was not a collectible form, his son Albert recalled. There were no shows, or any American furniture collections in museums. In the 1920's, Israel Sack moved to New York and started to amass first-rate furniture, and collectors who could afford it. Israel Sack was a brilliant marketer. He sponsored research[and] lectured widely. In the early part of this century, when American society was enamored of English antiques, he persuaded people to pay a premium for pieces made in America. You can tell American furniture by its accent, he liked to say. He argued that American furniture has its own qualities; instead of ornamentation and gilding, it has form, line, proportion, craftsmanship and rarity. He declared it an art form. From the 1920's until his death in 1959, Israel Sack sold to the top collectors of Americana: Henry Ford, Henry Francis duPont, Mabel and Francis Garvan, and Charles K. Davis, president of the Remington Arms Company

Published in Boston by Houghton Mifflin and Company in1924. Revised 3rd edition. Limited to 515 copies. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first book on this subject. Initially published in 1891. As the Wards point out(Ames& Ward) Lyon introduced many techniques used by later researchers, including the use of estate and inventory records, newspaper advertisements and cabinetmaker's price books, and he also traveled to England to investigate the origins of his beloved 17th century New England furniture. A pioneering study which is still useful. Stillinger concludes- Lyon's conclusions about the homes of the forefathers have held up startlingly well. The Colonial Furniture ... moreof New England' was so carefully researched and thoughtfully crafted that it remains a standard reference today-an extraordinary accomplishment considering the sophisticated research and technological aids available to the modern student of furniture. No other early furniture scholar's work has the same continuing validity. Dr. Lyon once told an acquaintance that in his medical practice his goal was always to get back to first causes. He took a comparable approach to his furniture studies. With excellent results" Semowich 771. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x11" 285 pages, plus 113 black& white plates. CONDITION NOTES: Some minor soil. AMERICAN ANTIQUE PHILADELPHIA EMPIRE PERIOD FURNITURE & CABINETMAKERS
Philadelphia Empire Furniture” By John William Boor. With Allison, Jonathan, Christopher, Peter Boor. Published in Hanover by the University Press of New England in 2006. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: This volume looks closely for the first time at Philadelphia Empire furniture and the development of decorative arts in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1840. The authors explore Neo-Classicism. Contemporary history of Philadelphia, the emergence of Greek-Revival architecture, and the cabinetmakers of Philadelphia Empire furniture. At the beginning of the 19th century Greek-inspired architecture gained popularity in Philadelphia and the city became known for its classically-inspired monumental buildings. Newly designed structures of ancient inspiration were decorated with classical furniture that became the prevailing style ... morein private homes as well as public buildings. The arrival of immigrant craftsmen from Europe in the early 19th century and their subsequent collaboration with American furniture makers produced highly sophisticated Empire designs. Neither French nor English, the designs incorporated purely American elements and became known as American Empire. Nineteenth-century Philadelphia Empire craftsmen were particularly well-known for their extensive motif carving, which often has a fluid, three-dimensional character. Philadelphia Empire Furniture' illustrates in color and describes in detail hundreds of Philadelphia decorative art forms from this period, including wood types, dimensions, and maker(if known) Chapters are dedicated to each of the following forms: card tables. Platform pedestal tables, pier tables, worktables, sofas, chairs, sideboards, secretaries, chests, bedsteads, looking glasses, clocks, and other decorative elements. A separate chapter is devoted to the previously unpublished sketchbook of accomplished craftsman Anthony G. Quervelle. Besides Quervelle, other talented and successful Philadelphia furniture makers included Michel Bouvier, Charles White,
AMERICAN FURNITURE ANTIQUES ART SOCIETY PORTRAIT ARTIST CHANNING HARE COLLECTION
An Interesting Auction Catalog- Eighteenth Century American& English Furniture. The Property of Channing Hare” The catalog to an auction held by Parke-Bernet Galleries in New York on December 11-12. 1970. The Finney(Rhode Island) lowboy, Elisha Tucker card table w/label, Regency inlaid mahogany and enameled glass fish-globe cage, and much more. Also included theorem paintings, carved eagles, marine paintings and folk portraits. Channing Hare[1899-1976] was known as"the crown prince of society portrait artists" Palm Beach Social Diary noted- Born in New York. Channing Weir Hare was a renowned Palm Beach artist, having studied at the Art Students League in New York and long associated with the prestigious Ogunquit artist’s colony. ... moreFor many years, he and artist Mountford Coolidge were inseparable, operating an antique business in Ogunquit. Fellow artist Stephen“Stevie” Hopkins Hensel fondly called Channing his"Uncle Bunny" and] shared'Son Julio' a 97-room castle on Majorca, where the locals referred to Hare as“Your Excellency. Liros Gallery's biography adds- Hare studied under the renowned George Bellows and Robert Henri. The flamboyant society painter was often associated with Mountfort Coolidge. With whom he operated a small antiques business. Although respected and successful painters in their own right, they] were identified more with the summer society life than it's art colony by many artists and local residents. Close friends, fellow artists and even business partners, the two men were synonymous with glamour, flamboyance, and chic. Despite Hare's seeming preoccupation with the gathering of interesting people for elaborate cocktail parties, he was a brilliant society portrait painter who reportedly commanded between $3,000 and $10,000 for a painting, top prices in those times. His clients Included such noted Palm Beach and New York socialites as Phyllis Rhinelander and
SUPERB ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE - EDDY NICHOLSON COLLECTION - CHRISTIE'S 1995
An Interesting Auction Catalog- The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Eddy Nicholson” The catalog to an auction held by Christie's in New York on January 27-28th. 1995. Sale 8082. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The auction sale of the premier Americana collection of the 1980s. Nicholson made headlines in the 1980s when he broke record after record buying premier pieces of American colonial and federal furniture and related decorative arts at auction. And then made headlines again when he sold it all. The catalog Christie's produced for the sale is a sumptuous hardcover, packed so full of color illustrations and folding color plates that it almost explodes right off the bookshelf. Nicholson's 2011 New York Times obituary relates- Eddy G. Nicholson. A spark plug of a man who was the son of a factory worker in Sherman, ... moreTex. began collecting early American artifacts in the early 1980s, flush from his recent success in high finance. His blunt, hard-driving style unnerved some buyers steeped in Old World collector traditions of propriety, art scholarship and, above all, privacy. For one thing, he would sit there with an auction paddle, which was unusual, said John Hays, the deputy chairman of Christie’s America, who became a friend. Important buyers usually sent surrogates or bid by phone, he explained. And if he wanted something, he added, nothing could stop him. Mr. Nicholson helped push prices to unprecedented heights. Bidding on an 18th-century Philadelphia Chippendale wing chair at Sotheby’s in 1986, he made the first bid at $400,000, and kept hoisting his paddle high while imperceptible signals from competitors around the room(an earlobe tug, a crossing of arms) drove the sale price to $1.1 million, then a record for American furniture, according to an account in The New York Times. Mr. Nicholson got his wing chair. In 1980 Mr. Nicholson was president of Congoleum, a publicly traded conglomerate involved in military contracting, auto supplies and floor covering, when he and a fello

Silver and portrait miniatures. Amongst the silver is the Col. William Lee tankard by Paul Revere. Lawton was a prosperous textile manufacturer who"assembled collections" of American antiques and then sold them off from time to time. The Foreword to this catalog notes- On past occasions when Mr. Lawton has taken time off from his textile manufacturing enterprise to assemble a group of Americana objects for dispersal in the sale room, the result has been highly satisfactory. Satisfactory, that is, from the viewpoint of the person seeking ... moreobjects of intrinsic and historical value. AMERICAN 17th CENTURY FURNITURE -WALLACE NUTTING 1921 Classic Pilgrim Century
Furniture of the Pilgrim Century 1620-1720. Including colonial utensils and hardware” By Wallace Nutting. Published in Boston by Marshall Jones Company in 1921. DISCUSSION: The first book published on the subject of American 17th century furniture. Like all Nutting books. Caution is required in figuring out where the good examples end and the restored or re-manufactured examples begin. This book was beset by controversy almost from the start, as within a year a broadside was circulated by an ironworker stating that he had made many of the examples of ironwork illustrated by Nutting. Still, as with other Nutting books, the sheer volume of furniture illustrated, as well as the important place these volumes have occupied in the literature for over three-quarters of a century, make them worth having. Ames& Ward 1. Speaking of both editions ... moreof the title(which were different enough to really qualify as two different books) notes that they"occasionally contain nuggets of information of use to modern researchers" DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x11" 587 pages, hundreds of black& white illustrations. With the ownership stamp of Alfred Easton Poor. Alfred Easton Poor[1899-1988] was an American architect. The designer of the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and president of the National Academy of Design in New York from 1966 to 1977. An Interesting Vintage Auction Catalog- Property from the Collection of Gunston Hall Plantation” CITY: New York. AUCTION GALLERY: Sotheby’s. AUCTION DATE: January 20. 2002. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Virginia’s Historic Gunston Hall is an 18th-century Georgian mansion. Constructed in the 1750s near the Potomac River, which was home to United States Founding Father George Mason. Since it became a historic museum many gifts and bequests of very fine antique American furniture and antiques had been used to decorate it. In the last decade of the 20th century a project was undertaken to restore the mansion to its original ca. 1760“look” both in architecture and furnishings. As a result, many fine American antiques which were not of that specific era, or were of the era but were from places that were unlikely to have had ... moretheir products appear in that decade in Virginia, were sent off to this auction. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES - BAYOU BEND IMA HOGG COLLECTION
American Decorative Arts and Paintings in the Bayou Bend Collection” By David B. Warren. Michael K. Brown, Elizabeth Ann Coleman, Emily Ballew Neff. Published by the Museum of Fine Arts. Houston in 1998. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A stunning. Oversized catalog of this important collection, including furniture, art, textiles, silver, ceramics and glass. The'Bayou Bend Collection' was assembled by Ima Hogg. A collector of American arts during the first"Golden Age" from the 1920s through the 1950s. Bayou Bend is the former home of Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg. The mansion, designed by architect John F. Staub, was built between 1927 and 1928 for Ima Hogg and her brothers, William C. and Michael Hogg. Miss Hogg created a series of gardens that were intended as outdoor rooms for living and entertaining. ... moreIn 1957, Miss Hogg donated her home and her collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Bayou Bend opened to the public in 1966. Staub's plan for Bayou Bend combined eighteenth-century Georgian architecture with elements that are distinctly Southern and of Spanish Creole architecture. The collection at Bayou Bend presently consists of approximately 4,700 objects that reflect historic and stylistic periods from 1620 to 1870 installed in some 28 period room settings that showcase American decorative arts from 1620 through 1870. Miss Hogg began assembling this important collection of American decorative arts in 1920. To provide suitable settings for these extraordinary antiques. Staub designed simple but stately interiors in the style of colonial American rooms. In 1920, while sitting for a portrait by artist Wayman Adams, Miss Hogg admired a simple armchair belonging to the artist that was made in colonial America and later obtained a similar Queen Anne chair for herself. Almost half a century later, Miss Hogg acquired the very same chair that she had first seen in Adams' studio. From the time I acquired my first Queen Anne armchair in 1920, I had an unaccountable
ANTIQUE NEW ENGLAND QUEEN ANNE CHIPPENDALE AMERICAN FURNITURE at WINTERTHUR
New England Furniture at Winterthur. Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods” By Nancy E. Richards& Nancy Goyne Evans. Published by Winterthur in 1997. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A thorough catalog of the New England Queen Anne and Chippendale furniture at Winterthur. Replacing Joseph Downs' 1952 classic catalog of this collection. In addition to new photographs and descriptions, and some new attributions, there is much additional furniture which was purchased after 1952. The catalog is divided into sections covering-seating furniture-bedsteads-tables-stands and fire screens-dressing tables& high chests-chests of drawers, bureau tables& chests on chests-desks-looking& dressing glasses-case studies, or, furniture that is not what it seems) The Winterthur website notes- Almost 60 years ago. Collector ... moreand horticulturist Henry Francis du Pont(1880–1969) opened his childhood home, Winterthur, to the public. Today, Winterthur is the premier museum of American decorative arts, with an unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects made or used in America between about 1640 and 1860. The collection is displayed in the magnificent 175-room house, much as it was when the du Pont family lived here, as well as in permanent and changing exhibition galleries. Winterthur is set amidst a 1,000-acre preserve of rolling meadows and woodlands. Designed by du Pont, its 60-acre naturalistic garden is among America’s best, with magnificent specimen plantings and massed displays of color. Graduate programs and a preeminent research library make Winterthur an important center for the study of American art and culture. In his later years, du Pont wrote: I sincerely hope that the Museum will be a continuing source of inspiration and education for all time, and that the gardens and grounds will of themselves be a country place museum where visitors may enjoy as I have, not only the flowers, trees and shrubs, but also the sunlit meadows, shady wood paths, and the peace and great calm of a coun

2 VOLUME SET ON ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE - EDGAR G. MILLER CLASSIC
An American Furniture Classic- American Antique Furniture. A Book for Amateurs” By Edgar G. Miller. Jr. Published in New York by New York Dover Publications in 1966. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A re-issue of the first trade edition of this classic text. Published in 1937. Perhaps classic collection of pictures is a better description, as what Miller set out to do was create an encyclopedic survey of American furniture forms and styles down to“about 1840” In this he succeeded, drawing heavily on many private collections in the Baltimore area as well as other archives. Semowich notes that“it is still considered a standard reference book” whose“usefulness lies in its photographs” and Homer Eaton Keyes, editor of the Magazine Antiques, praised the book in its Foreword as a good tool to acquiring“the fundamental knowledge ... moreessential to a correct stylistic analysis of any reasonably pure example of old-time American furniture” Keyes went on to tackle one problem with all the pictorial surveys of the era in one of his better flights of literary fancy. Noting that“Not without some guile, I believe, Mr. Miller parades a thoroughly democratic furniture group in which high aristocrats of cabinetmaking consort amicably with honest bourgeois types, and even an occasional upstart of uncertain lineage and doubtful integrity is tolerated if his outward demeanor conforms to a certain accepted minimum of propriety” Nutting has been criticized for the same failing, but not in such velvet-trimmed words. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE -UNDERSTANDING & COLLECTING -JOHN T. KIRK CLASSIC
American Furniture. Understanding Styles. Construction, and Quality” By John T. Kirk. Published in New York by Harry N. Abrams in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: What style is it? How is it put together? Is it real or is it a fake? How can I make it look its best without destroying its value? John T. Kirk answers these and many other questions about when. Where, how, and even why a piece of furniture was made. The book moves sequentially through major design periods, including ... morethe popular William and Mary and Queen Anne styles, Rococo and Chippendale, Federal, Shaker, Modern, and Revival. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FEDERAL FURNITURE BY SCOTTISH CABINETMAKERS IN NEW YORK
Scottish Cabinetmakers in Federal New York” By Mary Ann Apicella. Published by the University press of New England in 2007. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first full-length study of the Scottish community of craftsman in Federal New York. To contextualize and personalize these objects, the author includes a discussion of Scottish migration patterns, artistic and social influences, and the cultural epicenter of New York City. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES -the 1929 GIRL SCOUT EXHIBITION CATALOG
Loan Exhibition of Eighteenth Century and Early Nineteenth Century Furniture& Glass. Portraits by Stuart. Peale and others, for the Benefit of the National Council of Girl Scouts, Inc. Published in New York by the American Art Galleries in 1929. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The importance of the Girl Scouts Loan Exhibition cannot be overstated. Although sometimes it seems it has become something of a cliché. Simply put, it was the most important and richest loan exhibition of American antique furniture and other decorative arts ever staged to be drawn in large part from private collections; although it did not start the popularization of American antiques, it contributed largely to its continued success and gave both scholars and collectors new focus; it brought a large number of prominent dealers and collectors ... moretogether in a way which had not been accomplished since the Hudson-Fulton exhibition of 1909; it provided the first broad popular showing of American Federal-period antiques; finally, it inspired an enthusiasm which gave impetus to new books, catalogs and research. The Girl Scout Exhibition is seen by many as the starting point for all serious modern scholarship in the fields of American decorative arts. The catalog features illustrations of fine furniture. COLLECTING & UNDERSTANDING ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE -John Kirk -Hardcover ed.
Early American Furniture. How to Recognize. Evaluate, Buy, and Care for the Most Beautiful Pieces. By John T. Kirk. Published in New York by Alfred A. Knopf in 1970. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An essential work. And one of the classic books showing how to analyze and understand a piece of furniture. It is Kirk's gift to be able to see furniture and to communicate his understanding of the form and ornament to others. This introduction remains the best guide to the essential skill of learning to look" Ames& Ward) John T. Kirk is one of the preeminent furniture historians of the 20th century. Winterthur, which holds some of his research papers, notes- John T. Kirk is a noted scholar specializing in American furniture and the Shakers. His father was a builder and most enjoyed the work of restoring old houses. ... moreThis stimulated John Kirk’s interest in old buildings and antiques, and eventually he even restored a couple of old homes himself. Kirk became a journeyman cabinetmaker and studied furniture design. He then received his bachelor’s degree from Earlham College and earned a master’s degree in art history from Yale University. He was a professor at Boston University for many years, and retired as emeritus professor of art history. Mr. Kirk has been a consultant curator for several historic house museums and a director of the Rhode Island Historical Society. He was the curator for three exhibits of Shaker furniture and materials and one on Connecticut furniture. He has written many articles and a number of books, mostly focusing on regional differences in American furniture, the relationship between English and American furniture, and Shaker design. Silver and accessories. This beautifully printed volume, set in Monotype Bembo and with full-tone collotype illustrations, established a high visual standard for furniture catalogs that was emulated by Joseph Downs in the 1950s and Morrison Hecksher in the 1980s. The catalog includes 125 examples of high-style furniture, the vast majority from Massachusetts ... moreand Rhode Island, although some superb Philadelphia objects are included. These objects are not included in Richard Randall's 1965 catalog. Karolik's musings, As I Reflect upon the Collection" provide a fascinating look at the mind of an idiosyncratic collector" Ames& Ward. Maxim Karolik(1893-1963) was a Russian opera singer. Immigrant, and art collector and benefactor who cut a swath through the Boston and American collecting scenes. The magnificent bequests of American furniture and paintings he and his wife made to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts earned them a place in the pantheon of Boston's patrons of the arts, and their rediscovery and championing of the works of Fitz Hugh Lane and Martin Johnson Heade, along with 19th century American fine and folk artists earned them a place in American collecting lore. The Karoliks deflected such honors, and in an open letter to the MFA's Director, Maxim Karolik declared"We are not'Patrons of Art' or'Public Benefactors. We refuse to accept these banal labels. We accept with pleasure only one label: Useful' Semowich 1352. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9.25"x12" 366 pages
MUSEUM OF EARLY SOUTHERN DECORATIVE ARTS - ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES
Southern Perspective. A Sampling from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts” Edited by Gary J. Albert. Published by MESDA in 2005. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A wonderful survey of 40 objects- furniture. Ceramics, silver, paintings, from the MESDA collection. Out of print as hardcover. MESDA's website notes- MESDA is the realization of a vision shared by two extraordinary individuals: Frank L. Horton and his mother Theodosia"Theo" L. Taliaferro. Who were pioneering antiques dealers and collectors who dedicated most of their lives to raising awareness of and appreciation for domestic objects made in the South. During the first half of the twentieth century, southern antiques were mostly dismissed by scholars and ignored by collectors. A movement to challenge the existing attitudes began in 1949 ... morewith the first Williamsburg Antiques Forum at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, which included a seminal session that called attention to the lack of information about southern craftsmanship. The intense study of specifically southern antiques began with the 1952 Williamsburg Antiques Forum, which coincided with the first definitive exhibition of southern furniture, Furniture of the Old South, 1640- 1820 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and culminated with the opening of MESDA in 1965. The results of the museum's efforts to fulfill its mission have extended well beyond the exhibition of the collection to include groundbreaking field research programs, award-winning publications, a respected research center and decorative arts library, and exceptional educational programs such as the Graduate Summer Institute cosponsored by MESDA and the University of Virginia. They had just moved into a house furnished by Ginger's aunt(in Victorian style) when Ginger stopped off in Birmingham, Michigan, at the antique store of one Jes Pavey, an American furniture enthusiast. He saw some fake antique fire irons in the back of the car and pointed them out. What can I do? asked Mrs Meyer, horrified. Pavey sold her a genuinely old set. Two days later, she rang Pavey and said, Would you hurry over? he recalls. She said: Mr Meyer is here and getting ready to go to the office. Come over and drive in the driveway, so he can't get out. Before Pavey left, he'd been commissioned to redo the house in American style. Meyer told me, When you find something you think fits in this house, we'll discuss it and send you a cheque.
