There was a Nichols Brothers Chair Manufactory in Westminster, Massachusetts. By 1857, it was an established company that became the benchmark in craftsmanship. At the turn of the century, the business was moved to neighboring Gardner, Mass. to gain an easier access to the railway. After fires burned the old wooden factory. An updated brick facility was opened in 1907 by Charles Nichols, with his new partner Reuben Stone, under the name Nichols& Stone. They specialized in Windsor chairs and Boston rockers. By the 1930's. Edmund L. Nichols and Albert Stone, had taken the helm. Turning to the more problematic issues of consumer preference and marketing, they pioneered in merchandising by specializing in Windsor chairs and Boston rockers, building the brand awareness. Purchased from a local estate sale. This is a unique and rare wooden infant's high chair. Wood finish is turning into a nice patina with primitive wear marks from lots of loving use! Back of chair has a tole/ toleware style or Hitchcock style painted decoration, and appears to be from the 1930's-50's. Very old piece in nice shape for its age! Because the local estate this came from is located so close to Lancaster. PA, I do believe that is the likely origin of this old piece. The tole style painted portion looks very PA Dutch, which is another indication that it is in fact from that area, and may be an Amish or Mennonite piece. Local antiques that come from Lancaster County are either items owend by the Amish and Mennonite communities, or they were items made by Amish and Mennonite craftsmen. However I have no way of knowing for sure where this came from because Amish and Mennonite craftsmen do not sign their work a
