Here is a lovely comb back Windsor armchair from the American manufacturer Nichols & Stone of Gardner, MA. I believe it is solid maple with an Old Pine ... morefinish and probably dates to the 1950s/60s. It has bamboo style turned legs with a barrel shaped midsection and an overall colonial style. Nichols & Stone began making furniture in the 1850s and finally closed up shop around 2008. They have since been reincarnated under the Stickley name and are available again in some limited forms. The chair is a bit on the small size so ideal for a small adult or big kid or a side chair for presentation in any room. I've listed measurements for shipping but it can always be picked up locally or sent through someone like uShip. Thanks for looking.

This is a wonderful assembled set of antique Windsor chairs that where in the same family for years, we would estimate the paint being 50-100 years old ... more, the chairs over all work well together one chair has a different stretcher on the bottom and would be a later chair probably 1810 , the chairs could have some old repairs, I don’t see anything obvious , the chairs are a good height one chair is little less about 15/16 to the seat , they have a great look and will be fantastic in your home . These chairs are extremely hard to find in a form in any sort of set the last time we had an assembled set of six they sold very fast I assume with paint these wont be around long , we are here to sell them !!

This 19th century English child's Windsor arm chair was probably made between 1820 and 1870. I believe the wood is yew. The seat is 12" tall. ... moreFrom floor to top of back it is 28" and 16.75" at the widest part, across the arms- all measurements are approximate. It has an upper and lower splat back with 2 spindles on each side of the upper splat The legs are turned with a nice double ring and there is a crinoline stretcher. It has ball feet and the underarm supports are nicely turned. As far as I can tell, it is all original, including the finish. I have rubbed oil on it, but that is all. The seat has a stain on the front left- you can see it in the 2nd picture. Also, the seat wood has a rather large knot- part of the knot is missing and has left a small crater- you can see it up close in picture#4. The last picture shows a crack by one of the rear spindles- it runs from the spindle to the edge of the seat- it is an old crack. If you know more about this chair than I do, please feel free to correct me so I can be as accurate in this description as possible. Overall condition is very good. Happy to answer all questions. This will go UPS Ground, insured. I've gone high on the shipping to cover myself- happy to refund any overages through PayPal after the shipping label is printed. 1760s American Windsor Side Chair
We have enjoyed this American Windsor for over 40 years. Now it's time for new owners to step forward. Notice the great splay on the legs and hand turnings. Long ago it was converted to a rocker(screws can be removed from rockers) There is a very old probably repair to top rail. Own a piece of American history. Local pick up in Chicago's western suburbs. Or it can be shipped if I take off the rockers via Fed Ex. Wait for invoice from me before paying. Do not pay automated invoice from eBay. I have to box chair up and then can give you an accurate shpg charge. My guesstimate is maybe $40 in the midwest and higher on the coasts. My items are from a smoke-free and pet-free home. American Bowback Painted Windsor Side Chair c 1790-1810
Please note. We have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description: This listing is for a late 18th to early 19th Century Bowback Painted Windsor Side Chair. Probably Pennsylvania circa 1790-1810. It has a wonderful black paint over another layer of reddish orange, probably also a layer over the original and currently unknown color. The bow back floats with perfect grace, carefully grasping each through-tenoned splinted spindle before diving through the single solid plank pine seat. The seat is heavily patinated, with deep grooves and wear from decades of active use. The wood is difficult to confirm, but by the style and others of similar craft the make up is likely elm and ash. The entire chair sits over four splayed bamboo carved legs, all four of which tenon through the plank ... moreseat before being secured with a splint, each held firmly and perfectly in place with a bamboo carved H-stretcher. This is a most charming chair, in excellent condition with wonderful patina and character throughout, still preserved in its original state beneath layers of protective paint. Measurements: Seat 13.5" wide x 14.5" deep. The seat sits 16" from the ground and the back of the seat is 33.5" high. Condition: Visually Outstanding Condition- These notes on condition are to guide your review of the images below. Though much of it adds to the character of the piece and does not detract. Paint worn throughout. Deep groves and losses in the plank seat. Chips and abrasions throughout. One nail, appears to be modern, on side of chair stabalizing hoop back. Plank seat split with a butterfly joint securing seat from beneath and two screws locking it in place. Chair is structurally strong, but could possibly be too weak to use functionally as a chair. Shipping: Freight Shipping this piece through a blanket wrap driver will cost $150 Shipping a large piece of furniture to your doorstep can be a complicated task. Antique Windsor 7-spindle bow-back chair
This Windsor chair came from the estate of a 99-year-old great-aunt whose ancestors were early settlers in western Pennsylvania. I am not an expert on the Windsor style. But based on my research this chair likely was made by a Philadelphia furniture maker in the late 1700's. The chair was painted over the years in at least three different colors: greenish blue. Dark red and black. The wear on the chair shows varying degrees of the three colors, with black and red predominating. Old staple holes in the sides and bottom of the hand-planed seat indicate the likelihood that the seat was covered at one time. There is a vertical zigzag surface crack at the back of the bow, as well as a split in the top, as shown in the photos. There is a very slight wiggle where the spindles are attached to the seat, but otherwise the chair's joints are ... moretight. Please study the pictures for complete condition information. SHIPPING: Free local pickup or you can arrange and pay for freight shipping with your preferred carrier.
c. 1820's ORIGINAL EARLY ANTIQUE CHILD'S WINDSOR ROCKING CHAIR
I have to set this on the floor and see if the back is still uneven. Cause it sure looks like it is in the photo, but I never noticed it before. I knew this chair was something when my crappy friend Shirley kept trying to get it off of me. Believe it may have been handmade and you can see that it was once painted cause there is a bit of the old milk paint remaining where they were unable to remove it from the coarse ends. Measures 18 inches tall to the top of the back rail, 10 inches tall to the top of the seat and 10 wide at the widest point of the seat. It is 12 inches wide at the to horizontal rail. Very good condition made with hardwood that has been worn down to a beautiful patina. There is one slight hairline in the seat just where the wood has dried out over the years, but the seat is very thick as you can see so is not going anywhere ... morefast. Amazing how they are able to support the back without any side supports. Sort of ignorant about these things, so feel free to email any questions that you may have and I will do my best to answer. Thanks very kindly.

THIS IS ONE OF 2 SIMILAR CHAIRS THAT ARE FOR SALE. MY DAD BOUGHT THESE IN WESTERN PENNSYLVLANIA ABOUT 40 YEARS AGO. FROM A WEALTHY DOCTOR WHO HAD A FABULOUS ANTIQUES COLLECTION, AND WAS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT AMERICAN AND ENGLISH ANTIQUES, ESPECIALLY PIECES FROM PENNSYLVANIA. MY DAD GAVE THEM TO ME. Original American New England Fan Back Painted Windsor Antique Side Chair
Unusual American Windsor Painted Fanback Side Chair Circa late 18th- early 19th Century. Overall outstanding original condition Item# 120012WYO04 Maple: Legs. Stretchers, stiles, spindles Poplar: Seat Oak: Crest rail This is a rather unusual and quite well preserved original American Windsor Fanback style Side Chair. The overall profile striking in composition. The back of the chair is crafted almost entirely perpendicular to the floor, creating a sense of formality about the chair that is distinct. Sitting in it, the spindles give incredible support and even pressure against the back, but there is some discomfort to the cant of the back, where you almost feel like hunching as you sit in the chair. The seat is likewise rather unusual. Crafted of a solid plank of poplar with a backward cant, the surface entirely flat until it builds up for ... morethe spindles. The legs tenon through the seat, but are not joined with wedge-splits as is often found in the through-tenon joinery. Instead, the pressure of gravity and weight of the sitter is used to keep firm joinery of the legs, a quite successful design that has remained firm for nearly two hundred and fifty years. The back is crafted of nine tapered spindles of maple, these flanked by turned ring-and-baluster stiles that tenon through the seat. Each of the spindles peg through the crest rail along the bottom of the crest rail, the serpentine oak rail flowing into beautiful and precise curl-carved ears on either side. The chair rests over uniquely turned maple legs, the rounded taper of the feet somewhat unusual, each locked in place by an H-form maple stretcher with thick swollen turnings. This is a wonderful selection for anyone passionate about windsor chairs. Especially those with distinct variation from the norm. With a grimy early paint, not original, and a well preserved patina throughout, this is an absolute treasure in well preserved and relatively untouched condition(other than the later painted surface) It is a piece you will enjoy in your home for a lifetim
American New England Windsor Hoop Back Bamboo Turned Side Chair c. 1790-1810
Click for a slideshow of detailed pictures! American Hoopback Windsor Side Chair w/ Bamboo Turnings New England. C. 1790-1810 Item# 120009QOE16B Woods: Pine(plank seat) Maple(legs. Spindles& stretchers) Hickory(crest rail) This is a very handsome hoopback example crafted with utmost precision featuring carved bamboo stiles. The steam bent hickory crest rail is perfectly formed. Bombe before concaving in to tenon through the plank seat. The seven maple spindles are graduated, very carefully and precisely carved to swell at each joint where a thin channel highlights the joint to resemble a shoot of bamboo. These tenon through the crest rail, many actually peeking over the rail now from years of shrinking and expanding. The seat has wonderful form, being softly scooped out and shaped, a shallow channel framing the gallery of spindles along ... morethe back. The four legs tenon into, but not through, the seat surface, leaving it undisturbed by anything but the deep and wonderful pitting and oxidization that has become it's patina. Deep in the grooves and cracks, small remnants of the original green paint add to this, leaving a piece of it's history behind. The underside of the seat has more of this dark milk paint, mingled amongst the nearly black oxidization and staining throughout. The maple legs mirror the spindles, though with much embellishment, swelling sharply at each joint and tapering down at the feet. Maple has the wonderful distinction of being crisp and tight when carved, the reason why it is used in most windsor legs- on the bamboo design, this becomes particularly attractive. An H-form stretcher locks the legs in perfect balance. This is a very fine hoopback windsor. An excellent selection for anyone passionate about this form. Crafted in the height of the period, with the remnants of it's original color and undisturbed construction, this is a chair you will cherish and enjoy. If well cared for, this chair will last many generations while still being fully functional for daily enjoyment. Measure

18th Century American New England Windsor Sack Back Arm Chair 1780-1800
Original 18th Century Sack Back Windsor Arm Chair Probably New England Circa 1770-80 Woods: Hickory(arms. Crest rail, spindles) Maple(arm supports, legs and stretcher) Pine(seat) This is a wonderful early example of what has become known as a"sack back" windsor. It's origin is a bit difficult to ascertain without a provenance, but we would say New England. It was very well executed, the bowed crest with a soft curvature, flowing easily into the curved arm rail. Each spindle tenons through this crest rail, each with split-wedge tenon device hammered into the top of each to lock them into the crest. This split-wedge is replicated in all through-tenon joints in the chair. More uniquely, and as a testament to the attention shown by it's craftsman, each long spindle swells at the lower half in symmetry with it's opposing ... morespindle, then tapering impossibly thin at the top. Built to last, not a single spindle has been damaged or broken, despite the very thin profile of each. The arm rail has a soft upward slope, creating an overall backward leaning profile, allowing you to rest comfortably in a slightly reclined position as your arms rest naturally. Supporting each arm is a turned maple arm support, each turned with superior level of skill- if you are familiar with sack back examples, comparing the soft swelling and sharp turnings of the arm supports will certainly set this chair apart from its peers. The seat has a chiseled channel around the spindles, as typically found in this form, giving shape to the ovular shaped seat, formed carefully to allow comfort. This rests over four turned and tapered legs supported by an H-form stretcher, swollen at the medial and smooth along the edges. It has a nice splay to the legs, comfortable and stable while still being quite angular. The finish appears to have once been a rich black over red primer. This is a wonderful find for any collector of pure American antiques. It is fully original in all aspects but the finish, remnants of which are still visible in part

American New England Sack Back Knuckle Arm Windsor Chair, Rhode Island c. 1780
American New England Knuckle Arm Sack Back Windsor Chair Probably Massachusetts or Rhode Island c. 1780-1800 Item# 130102JGG13 Poplar(seat) Maple(legs. Stretchers, arm supports, outside and underside of knuckles) Oak(arm rail. Crest rail) Hickory(spindles) This is a very fine American Sack Back Knuckle Arm Windsor Chair. Crafted in the New England States, probably Massachusetts or Rhode Island c. 1780-1800. It is a high style piece, the six long and tapered hickory spindles tapering through the round oak crest rail, this wrapping in a perfect arch to tenon through the oak arm rail, which continues out to terminate in carved knuckle arm holds. The arm holds are pieced, the oak arm rail forming the primary interior while the rest of the knuckle on the side and bottom are of carved maple, attached to the arm rail with tiny wooden pins. The flow ... moreand precision of these knuckles brings the entire chair's form together, being both bold and comfortable as they splay outward on either side. The arm rail rests upon turned maple arm supports. These with a slightly swollen medial baluster embellished with paired parallel scratched-bead channels crowned and footed with very sharp ring turnings. The oval seat is scooped and carved, a thin grooved channel framing the spindles, the wear of the seat revealing much of the earlier layers of red paint. The legs tenon through the seat in the normal fashion. These with the common ring-and-baluster turnings terminating in a long tapered foot, contracting slightly faster than a smooth taper would dictate in the Rhode Island manner. The H-form stretchers have a soft swell, the medial stretcher with ring-turnings on either side. Perhaps what makes this form so successful is the same thing that has led to some looseness in it's joints: the chair has an action-oriented profile. Leaning almost forward like it is ready to start a race. While a more squared leg splay would be stronger and more well-balanced, this chair was not designed to be a restive form. This is a special piece,

Antique 18th Century English Comb Back Windsor Chair With Original Paint
Offered here is an English Comb Back Windsor Chair that I have owned and cherished for several decades. It was purchased at a high-end shop in either Winnetka or Wilmette. Two neighboring suburbs on Chicago's north shore. The shop's owner made semi-annual buying trips to Great Britain. He asserted that the chair was from the mid-18th century and had been found in England's Yorkshire region. Its measurements are as follows- Height: 38" Seat: 16-1/2" wide x 17" deep, Arm-to-arm width: 24" Leg height: 15-1/2" Leg span: 21-1/2" across, 17-3/4" deep. The plank seat is about 2" thick. Its a tribute to the chair's maker that this simple contoured plank is so comfortable to sit on. Portions of the seat, legs and stretchers reveal the green milk paint with which the chair was originally painted. ... moreFrom the seat top and up, only bare wood shows through where the paint has worn away, hinting at an old re-painting job. The chair is entirely constructed of wood, including the pegs. Thus, it is puzzling that, as seen in the last photo, there appears to be a solitary round-headed nail or tack adjacent to a spindle. It doesn't seem to serve any purpose, its just there. Structurally, the chair is in excellent condition. There is an age crack on the underside of the seat that does not affect its sturdiness. I'm going to take a wild guess that shipping plus insurance, including professional packaging, will be $175.00. It its more, I'll eat the difference; if its less, you'll get a refund. One more thing: I am disabled and have difficulty getting around. I'm able to provide one day service on smaller items. Information that I have gathered about the chair: 1777 early American Windsor Bow Back chair. The chair has scratched on the underside of the seat the name“W BOWEN” and a date“1777” In correspondence with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. They stated that there was a William Bowen making chairs in Philadelphia, in the later part of the 1700’s. Through research and census information. William Bowen made Windsor chairs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 83 North Front Street 19106(near the hay scales) during the 1770's and 1780's. The chair was found in my grandfather’s attic. In Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, but how it arrived in Nova Scotia, is not known to my living relatives. Six generations back, I had an ancestor who was stationed in New York, during the American Revolution, who resettled in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, after ... morethe war) One interesting note. That a local chair-maker told me, is that there are two wedges in the spindle tenon, which he said wasn’t that common. Through some of my research I found some information about the chairmaker on page 106 of Nancy Goyne Evans book. American Windsor Chairs” The book portrayed a picture(which matches my chair) and some information on William Bowen. Robert Holland 8 West Street Kentville. Nova Scotia Canada B4N 1T3

1760 Windsor Low-Back Armchair Shipwreck Chair Captain David Hawley 1780 Rev War
Jeremiah Johnson Trading FINE ANTIQUES Revolutionary War. Civil War, Western, Nautical, Folk Art, Collectible Cars, and More! Amazing Pennsylvania Windsor Low-Back Armchair(Captain's Chair" Ca. 1760 picked up at sea by American Revolutionary War Privateer Captain David Hawley in 1780. What a truly amazing piece of American history! This chair comes right from a very old. Private collection along the Connecticut coast. The low-back arm chairs are among the most sought after and scarce of the early Windsors, and this chair in particular has a very unique history. The chair shows the typical wear and tear of something that was kicked around the ocean for a brief period of time, and a paper label fixed to the bottom of the chair from the period tells why. It reads; Picked up at sea about 1780 by Captain David Holly of Stamford" ... moreA brass plaque. Probably added in the early 19th century, is fixed to the top of the chair and clarifies; PICKED UP AT SEA, 1780 BY CAPTAIN DAVID HOLLY OF STAMFORD, CONN. I spoke with Stamford historian Barbara Kaye, who has confirmed that the surnames"Hawley" and Holly" were often used interchangeably during the time. David Hawley(Holly) of Stamford, Connecticut, is of course the infamous American Revolutionary War Captain, who is most noted for serving under Benedict Arnold at the Battle of Valcour Island in 1776, the capture of over 20 enemy ships, escaping capture himself on several occasions from the British in Long Island Sound, and the daring raid and capture of Thomas Jones, Esq, of Suffolk County. Hawley played a crucial role in the events that took place throughour Long Island Sound during the Revolutionary War. It is safe to say that this chair was probably aboard a ship(either British or Colonial) that was either sunk or ransacked off the New England coast, and it was salvaged by Hawley's ship. Original green paint can still be observed on the bottom of the chair, while it has been worn/removed from the other surfaces, and coated with an old shellac

ANTIQUE WALLACE NUTTING #326 Fan-Back Windsor Side Chair
WALLACE NUTTING#326 FAN-BACK WINDSOR SIDE CHAIR TOP QUALITY FURNITURE SIZE: Seat. 17-1/2 inches wide; 16-1/2 inches deep; 41 inches in height over all; seat 18 inches high Wallace Nutting began making his first Windsor chairs in 1917. Every part of every chair was finished 5 times by hand. Only the Finest woods were used; maple legs and turnings. Pine seats, and hickory spindles and rails. The earliest Nutting Furniture was always clearly marked with a paper label and a branding done of his name on the piece with block letters. This label and its specific dimensions identifies any chair of his as an ORIGINAL. As you see in Picture#6) The chair shows natural wear for its age. You will see some minor nicks and scratches, which is common for a chair of its age. As far as the structure of this chair, there is nothing broken or loose. Please Note ... morethat Shiping Is Available And Will Be Additional Cost To Buyer. Seller Will Help Cordinate Shipping By Reputable& Reasonably Priced Shipper. Wallace Nutting said of this style chair, This sort of chair is perhaps the most graceful among side chairs.Even when the ear is not carved, it is, if small, attractive and very convenient as the temporary hook for a hat or garment. Of this particular chair Wallace Nutting himself writes, There is an air about this chair that suggest the dignity and bearing of the people of its period. The curved and carved comb. The gracefully tapered and turned legs that are sharply raked, the slender appearing but substantial spindles, the staunch seat and the beautifully turned cross-stretcher, all combine to create a wonderfully effective and pleasing style. There is, perhaps, not other one Windsor chair so generally useful- none that weems to slide so harmoniously into the picture with other furniture. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING AND GOD BLESS!

American Black Painted Antique Bamboo Bowback Windsor Side Chair, Early 19th C.
American Black Painted Bowback Antique Windsor Chair Early 19th Century Item# 100008WPN02 This is a fine American Black Painted Antique Windsor Bowback Side Chair. Crafted during the first years of the 19th Century. It has a wonderful black paint over another layer of reddish orange, probably also a layer over the original and currently unknown color. The back of the chair has a graceful bow, carefully grasping each through-tenoned splinted spindle before diving through the single solid plank pine seat. The seat is heavily patinated, with deep grooves and wear from decades of active use. The entire chair sits over four splayed bamboo carved legs, all four of which tenon through the plank seat before being secured with a splint, each held firmly and perfectly in place with a bamboo carved H-stretcher. This is a most charming chair, in excellent ... morecondition with wonderful patina and character throughout- the early painted surfaces are probably not the original layers, but seem to protect earlier layers beneath, these quite possibly the earliest surfaces. A wonderful find for those that are passionate about fine windsor chairs. Measurements: Seat 13.5" wide x 14.5" deep. The seat sits 16" from the ground and the back of the seat is 33.5" high. Condition Report: Paint worn throughout. Probably not the original surfaces. Please review the images in the slideshow for a full overview of condition.
