$33.24 Shipping Condition: Used Location: Fremont, United States Vintage Cylinder Desk This is a fantastic vintage cylinder desk. It is a Mid-Century Danish Modern piece. It was made in Sweden. There is actually a label ... moreon the bottom with a maker's mark. Which we have been unable to identify. I have provided a picture of it- I believe it is a combination of the letters M S and I. It is also marked"No. 58747" and"528" The original hardboard back was marked"valnot" which means"walnut" in Swedish. We had to replace the back so this indicator has been removed. We are not sure which parts of the desk are composed of Walnut. Most of the desk surfaces have a gorgeous veneer. The star feature of the desk is the perfectly curved cylinder top. Which displays a quad-cut mirrored veneer design. When opened, there is a writing surface that can be pulled out. It measures 33 3/4" by 17" It sits 28 1/4" off of the floor. There are 5 cubbies which are all 3 7/8" tall. They vary in width from left to right: 8" 1 7/8" 10 7/8" 1 7/8" and 8" There are 3 small drawers between the writing surface and the cubbies. All of the drawers are 1 1/2" tall and 6 1/2" deep. The top and bottom drawers are 8 7/16" wide, and the center drawer is 12 5/16" wide. There are also 3 drawers below the writing surface, each of which measures 4 1/8" tall, 16" deep and 31 3/16" wide. This is in great condition overall with some general signs of age or use. There are some chips in the veneer on the bottom/front portion of the bottom drawer. The cubby and small drawer structure on the interior of the desk is slightly bowed. This does not effect the functionality in any way. The back of the desk has been professionally replaced with a material very similar to the original. Please see pictures for more details. It has three small pull out drawers on the inside with the middle drawer having a lift up mirror and there are three larger drawers below the desk area. The inside of the desk also has a couple of cubby shelves. If you look below the second shelf you can see someone has cut a small hole to pass cords through. I could not find any markers markings but I am guessing from other items in the house of this estate sale it is Danish and probably from the 60's or 70’s. It is of smaller proportions making it ideal for a smaller room. The approx. measurements are: 3’ 6½” tall/ 2’ 11” across the front and is 1’ 5¼” wide. 32 wide 16 deep 40 tall OK. Here comes the CSI work that those of us dealing in material culture from a past era practice in the attempt to identify furniture accurately. Clearly, this cabinet was meant for sorting. I date it somewhere in the last decade of the 19th century, perhaps up to 1910. It has been suggested that this was a postal cabinet in one of the Texas small towns or a hotel room key and message cabinet. I do not believe it was for postal sorting, as there have been no applied things to identify the slots. For the same reason, I do not believe it was meant to sort mail and messages for a small hotel- and there would have been no reason for doors in either of those applications. I have seen similar cabinets as the top of a flat or drop front desk and this makes the best sense to me. I cannot recall a piece of production furniture, ... morea desk top, of even the most modest use built without a locking mechanism, as though everyone who ever owned a desk had something to hide, even with their easily smashed glass doors. My point here is that this piece of well made furniture never had a lock, just 2 simple knobs. I believe it is a custom piece, meant for a purpose. Now, the purpose. Any small business at the turn of the 20th century would have kept its own books and the paperwork would have been kept close at hand, sorted, and handy. I don't see this cabinet as that of a private home, maybe for the foreman or business manager of a ranch, but not just someone's personal papers. It's way too clean for one of the dirty industries, like blacksmithing, drayage, or a feedlot, but could easily have fit into the country doctor's office or the small ranch or maybe as the top of a law clerk's desk or in a assay office. This is just off the top of my head. The thinking runs that a lawyer would have locks on everything, but the law clerk would be more of a paper shuffler. Every surface shows hand planing marks on this classic and functional furniture. The beautifully figured one-board drop front rests on pull out supports. Lock and key work. Inside are tiny drawers with exquisite dovetail joints and compartments for papers- old India ink stains show this was a working desk. Up for consideration is a very fine late 19th century Italian Secretary desk in the Baroque Style. The desk is handmade and dates about 1895. The piece measures 84 inches tall by 37 inches wide by 18 inches deep. And consists of 2 pieces. A top and a lower slant front desk section. The upper portion has 2 distressed mirrored doors that are backed by scenic decorated paneled backs.please see photos. The doors open up too reveal a spacious fitted interior.with neoclassical decoupage scenes including cherubs. This fitted secretary has a variety of mail slots and several drawers in the interior upper section as well as the lower writing section. This Secretary Desk was purchased in New York@ the end of the 19th Century and was passed down from my great great Grandmother finally to me. I couldn’t find any specific maker or label anywhere. But I just might not know where to look. It’s in pretty good overall condition considering its age. My Grandmother said it was from 1897( 115 years old) She died in 1982 and I have had it since. There is one portion near the top edge( second to last pic) which must have come off when I moved last year, but it seems nominal and the repair should be straight forward. I was able to simply hide this in a right side corner configuration and it was not really noticeable unless you were looking for it. Up for auction is an early oak secretary that is 75 1/4" tall. 42" wide at the base and 13 1/2" deep. The old secretary is in great condition and looks to have been professionally refinished in the past few years. The piece has 2 bevelled mirros, one measures 7 1/2" X 15 3/8" and the other measures 11 1/2" X 15 3/8" both mirrors are original with some normal wear on the silver and some scratches. The piece has beautiful leaf carvings on the top and on the secretary door. The piece has a very detailed carving of a face on the top and there is also a carved griffin head on each side near the top. The carving on top also has a few age cracks. The piece has a bookcase on one side that has a bow glass door. There are 4 shelves inside and each are adjustable.
