It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. The dimensions are 40 1/2” tall its tallest point. 33 1/2“ wide at its widest point at the base, and 19” deep when closed,and 34“ deep when opened. Local pickup only.

Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

But this complete top is in lovely, age-appropriate condition. I believe the wood is walnut with pine as a secondary wood. There is a top section that lifts that goes the entire away across with the molding. Revealing pigeon holes/cubbies. On either side of the piece are large doors.the left side has a grid of cubbies. The right side has horizontal dividers, with pretty ogee divider detail for vertical file storage. Four drawers with horizontal beaded details.they no longer have their pulls but move freely. The dovetails are not hand cut and irregular. But are consistent. Online I found this description: A close inspection shows no irregular saw cuts or variation from a skilled craftsman, but rather a precise and identical manufactured machined joint. These machine-cut dovetails are as strong and long lasting as the hand-made joints, and became the standard of better American furniture ever since the late 1890's. So this desk may be very late 1800s or early 1900s. Another indication is that the back is not multiple boards. But appears to be an early plywood? There is a tiny hole drilled in the back where I think my dad had our phone(land line) cord come in so the phone could be in the desk. Regardless, it is a beautiful old desk. Consisting of a plank top over two richly grained panel doors cross banded with maple in satinwood and enclosing a shelves interior; lower section consists of a fall out folding writing surface inset with a tooled brown leather above three long drawers. Each drawer cross banded in inlay and mounted with floral brass rosette pulls; lower straight frieze extends to turned tapering legs with detail including an inlaid cornice and banding; matched grains throughout. Iowa, on July 9, 1858, Richard Achilles Ballinger followed the path of his father into law, graduating from Williams College in 1884, joining the bar two years later, and gaining talent in the field of public land law. Settling in the then-Washington Territory in 1886, Ballinger would serve as mayor of Seattle from 1904 to 1906. Ballinger was brought to Washington by his old classmate at Williams. Theodore Roosevelt's secretary of the interior James Garfield, who employed Ballinger as commissioner of the General Land Office in 1907. Ballinger then returned to the private sector until President William Howard Taft appointed him secretary of the interior in 1909. I believe This desk was made sometime in the 1800s. It's 100% hand carved. It does not appear to be a replica to look old. It has many makers mistakes hidden inside its drawers and the underneath(bottom) of the desk seems to have much age wear on it as if it has been taken very good care of but still needed some repairing along the way. I wish I knew more of the story behind this beautiful desk but it was bought at an estate sale so I do not. He studied law and was admitted to the New York state bar in 1851. Two years later, Tracy, a Whig, became district attorney for Tioga County, but he was reelected in 1855 as a Republican, having helped to organize the new party in Tioga County. In 1862. Tracy was elected to the New York Assembly and helped recruit soldiers to fight for the Union in the Civil War. He went on to serve as a colonel in the 109th New York Volunteers. He was promoted to brigadier general, was awarded the Medal of Honor, and, in 1864, served as commander of the 127th Colored Regiment. Later that year, he became commandant of the Elmira(New York) prisoner of war camp. At war’s end. President Andrew Johnson tapped Tracy to serve ... moreas district attorney for the eastern district of New York. Tracy had entered private practice by 1873, but he returned to public service in 1881, when the governor of New York appointed him chief justice of the New York State Court of Appeals, a post he held for one year.
