Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

Davis came to the United States with his family and settled in Pennsylvania, where he began work as a"puddler" in the steel mills at the age of eleven. He attended Sharon Business College in Pennsylvania. Davis moved with his family to Indiana. Where he became a union representative in several steel industries. He served as city clerk of Elwood, Indiana(1898-1902) and recorder of Madison County, Indiana(1903-1907) President Warren G. Harding appointed Davis secretary of labor. And, following Harding's death, President Calvin Coolidge reappointed him to that post. Davis would remain as labor secretary until 1930. This is a very nice Chippendale style mahogany secretary desk. The desk is complete and is in good condition with several cosmetic flaws but great structural integrity. This desk is complete with original"Genuine Mahogany" tag(photo#3) 2 paper Maddox tags and a metal Maddox shield(photo#9) The shield reads"Maddox Colonial Reproductions Jamestown, NY. The desk is complete with claw feet(photo#5) and beautiful top decoration(photo#4) There are four large drawers in the bottom part of the desk that work perfectly. The desk is quite beautiful when you put the slant top down into writing position. The writing surface is in nice condition but does have several scratches on it. There are five small drawers across the inside of the desk that are topped by 8 letter slots(4 on each side) an open center space with a door, and two hidden ... morevertical pillar drawers(photo#6) There is some damage around the knobs of the drawers and door, particular the center drawer and door, and something stuck inside one of the letter slots(see photo#7) The glass doors on the top of the desk are in very nice condition with the only visible flaw being some imperfection(retouching? in the finish at the center of the doors(photo#8) There are three shelves behind the glass doors. The top shelf has some paper stuck on three side of the back left corner(I do not know if it can be removed or what the finish looks like underneath it) and a circular scuff mark on the back in the center(photo#10) On the lower portion of both the right and left side there is some kind of residue or damage(photo#11) I do not know exactly what it is or if it can be repaired. Finally, the curved parts that stick out above the first large drawer have some damage from moving(photo#12) This desk was in the living room of my grandparent's house from the 1950's or 1960's until we recently sold the house and moved it up to New Jersey. Early 1800's Empire Mahogany Secretary, (attributed to Meeks)
This is a great old early Mahogany Secretary Desk. We did not find a label but based upon form and style we can confidently attribute it to J&J W Meeks of NYC. Circa 1830 to 1840. It has been restored back to pristine condition, note photo of cracks that been repaired and filled. Flame grain figured mahogany veneer is prominent throughout this piece, it is truly beautiful. The drop down down door opens to reveal many compartments and drawers, the lock has been replaced on this door) on the side of the large drawer are these carvings: LP No 17/1803. There is one full length drawer and 3 doors at the bottom, the center door is straight while the one on each side is curved. the locks on these 3 doors have been replaced with new ones and the outside backing has been replaced. We did keep the back so we can include it with the piece if one ... morewould want it put back on, albeit it is in not very good condition and it has shrunk so will be ill fitting, nevertheless, it is available should one want to have it. Antique 1800s Secretary desk, hidden drawers, hand carved -MAKE OFFER-
I believe This desk was made sometime in the 1800s. It's 100% hand carved. It does not appear to be a replica to look old. It has many makers mistakes hidden inside its drawers and the underneath(bottom) of the desk seems to have much age wear on it as if it has been taken very good care of but still needed some repairing along the way. I wish I knew more of the story behind this beautiful desk but it was bought at an estate sale so I do not. Beautiful glass front and solid wood hutch and secretary desk 2-piece unit. With inlaid leather writing surface. Right and left lower sides have shelves and middle has drawers for storage. The lower unit's middle drawer is a"secretary desk" drawer that has a drop down front with an inlaid leather writing area. And alcoves for envelopes in back. Measures: 60 inches across. 78.5 inches high. Upper glass section is 11 inches deep, and lower is 14 inches deep. The last two pictures show the back of the unit. As is, insurance replacement appraisal is $1,200. Made in 1930-32 by Frewsburg Furniture Co in NY. Frewsburg was a wholly owned subsidiary of Kling and one of several furniture companies making furniture for Kling. This piece was one of the first made for Kling and still has the Frewsburg Furniture Company shipping label on back which further verifies the date the piece was made. Mahogany build with dove-tailed drawers. Four large dove-tailed drawers on bottom section. Inside middle are three drawers and a doored-compartment. The key for opening the middle section is included. The middle section has two ornamental pillars next to the small door in the middle. These two pillars slide out to reveal compartments. Antique Slant Drop Front Oak Secretary Desk - Lionhead
I am not an expert but an antique furniture appraiser looked at this piece recently and stated this is a unique desk that he's never seen one quite like it. It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. This is a very rare piece. I believe they called it a learning desk or hanging student desk. It has a chalkboard on the front and it opens to shelving inside where the child would store his pencils and such. Inside is in pretty decent condition. The wood needs a cleaning and TLC on the outside. The paper scroll(which is rare to have in tact) is there and whole. It is extremely frail and takes caution rolling the two levers to change images. There are other images showing basic learning skills through out the scroll and a lot of boy scout images. The scroll is dirty and starting to tear. Some areas were taped.
