Tall Antique Victorian Oak Cylinder Desk Carved Secretary Glass Front Shelves
Fantastic Victorian era cylinder top desk. Made from oak with pine secondary woods. Panelled back and sides. The large upper cabinet has flexible. Movable shelves and period glass doors. It rests atop a cylinder or roll top desk area with a small drawer and several pigeon holes. The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper ... morecabinet. Information on This Item This is a charming 1860's Carved Walnut Davenport Secretary. It has classic urn designs in the carved panel doors. Which are hand chamfered. Inside are great cubbies and 2 drawers, one of which has the compartments for an inkwell and pencil tray with hidden storage underneath. The felt writing surface was replaced at some point. The writing surface raises for storage and has the original support to hold it up. There is storage on each side, behind doors. New lowered reserve- This Secretary Desk was purchased in New York@ the end of the 19th Century and was passed down from my great great Grandmother finally to me. I couldn’t find any specific maker or label anywhere. But I just might not know where to look. It’s in pretty good overall condition considering its age. My Grandmother said it was from 1897( 115 years old) She died in 1982 and I have had it since. There is one portion near the top edge( 3rd from last pic) which must have come off when I moved last year, but it seems nominal and the repair should be straight forward. I was able to simply hide this in a right side corner configuration and it was not really noticeable looking at it from the left side or straight on, only unless you were looking from the right. It comes to us from an 78 year old lady who acquired it from her mothers old barn. The stuff she brought us had been stored and untouched for at least 40 years. The secretary was rough planed and you can still see the circular saw marks(see pictures) The circular saw was invented in 1830s. So the secretary was made no earlier than 1830. The very top of the bookshelf has a circular mark which appears to be where the previous owner(s) kept a plant. On the fold down writing desk there is a small chip in the wood on the left hand corner. There are four holes on top of the secretary desk where the bookcase is attached also there are scratches and wear from the bookcase rests(these are not visible when the desk is attached) The back has rough unfinished wood showing. 1024x768 The secretary is believed to be circa about 1890. The carvings are beautifuland unusual. The two side doors open revealing shelves; the bottom middledrawer does the same; and the top drop-down door reveals small drawers. Nooksand crannies. There is another drawer between the drop-down and lowerdoors. The drop-down door needs tohave the hinges tightened slightly. As it will occasionally drop down on itsown. Also, the door itself has been repaired, and the repairs are visiblefrom the inside view(midway down the door) there is also a mostly-invisibleline that can be seen from the front if you look closely, which is where thesame repair occurred. You are bidding on a very beautiful solid oak drop front ladies writing desk that reminds me of a very fancy Larkin Style Desk. There is a mohogany desk similar to this one with all the heavy brass detailing. It is made by the Paine Company. I believe it says on their label. My desk has the original golden oak finish. It is in very good condition for its age, minor wear& tear. All the brass decoration is original. There is lots of hand carving and also applied carvings. It has a book shelf at the bottom. There is a beautiful oval bevel mirror on the backsplash. The inside of the desk has a grand writing surface and lots of pigeon or cubby holes for extra stuff.
